Working across different ServiceNow environments, you start to notice the same patterns popping up over and over again. Just recently, two different clients—one mid-deployment and another working through their platform security design—asked me the same question:
“Can we just manage all our ServiceNow roles and permissions inside our Enterprise Identity tool instead of using ServiceNow natively?”
It’s a completely reasonable question. Identity and Security teams naturally want a single, centralized place to manage access across every system in the business. "One Identity tool to rule them all" sounds brilliant on paper.
In practice? It’s rarely that clean.
ServiceNow’s security architecture was built around products (itil, hrsd, grc, admin, etc.). On the flip side, most enterprise identity platforms—whether that’s Okta, Azure AD / Entra, SailPoint, or One Identity—are built around people. Getting these two fundamentally different design philosophies to play nicely together is usually where the challenge is.
