View this email in your browser The most important skill: Story TellingThis is an updated version of a message I sent when my mailing list was only a couple hundred people (we're now over 1200!). I'm resending due to the amount of coaching requests I get per week. At the bottom of this message I'll post some job openings I know about to test you story skills on. One strategy I outlined in my 8 Strategies for ServiceNow Career Ascension was story telling. But just how does one get good at that? STORY TELLING HELPS EVERYONE ARCHITECT / PRODUCT OWNER? It is your responsibility to steer an entire organization to the best outcomes. The best way will always be at war with the expedient. Nothing but convincing stories will get you there. DEV? The more compelling your story, the more you help the architect win you the path you wish to take on a solution. ADMIN? Open all avenues of advancement: BA / implementation / development / & architecture roles. As foremost on the front line, you will be able to articulate scalability and sustainability issues like no one else. RECRUITER? Help your customer tell the tale of their need so you attract those uniquely positioned to fulfill it. Win resources over with other benefits when rate is against you. PARTNER? The ecosystem is more crowded than ever, and stories are the *only* thing that differentiates you from competition. LIFE'S DIRTY LITTLE SECRETInstinct is a powerful driver. In the animal world, it is the only driver. In civilization, we pretend instinct takes a back seat to objectivity, but consider: Everyone who ever chose the wrong path when you knew the right one was told a better story. Everyone who ever earned a position without the requisite hard skills, told a better story. Every leader who's held the attention of a crowd for more than 5 minutes has told a story that compels the audience. The best you can hope for in life is that the best story teller actually has the best solution. Be sure you're the best story teller. AMPLIFY YOUR STORY GAME PRIMALITY: The more a story taps into fear of harm or hope for advantage, the more successful it will be. We resonate with character's who's fears and longings are easily accessible, and thus relate-able to us. EMOTION: Don't be naive & think objectivity wins the day. When making a case, saturate the story with emotion. "Remember how F---ING AWFUL it was when we had to re-architect the solution that one time? Remember the projects we put on hold and how pissed off the stakeholders were? That's why we need to maintain design standards" COMPONENTS: Every story has a challenge, a hero, a guide, a climax, and a return. Start overlaying that paradigm over everything. And remember: You are not the hero. The apex story teller is the guide! The party making the decision that you influence is the hero (but only if they're captivated in your story). EMPATHY: To tell a compelling story requires a sense of what compels & motivates one's audience. Put yourself in your audience's position. Try to understand and anticipate their fears and motivations. What are they trying to maximize and minimize. AUTHENTICITY: Hard to fake, easy to practice. Authenticity = hard skills + emotion + empathy + opinions. Remember: You're the guide, not the hero. Practice authenticity by forming opinions about everything, and talking about them frequently. You will either convince people, or get enough feedback to form better opinions. PLURALITY OF AUDIENCE: So you've got a stakeholder hooked on your story. Great, now understand that your stakeholder is asking you to do something on ServiceNow because they have an audience as well.
