Embracing Adaptive Planning
[Music] welcome back to the Enterprise agility podcast I'm your host John Lim and today we've got part two of our series on strategic planning last episode we heard from n and Andy about the strategies that leading Enterprises are implementing to maximize their strategic planning processes what are we talking about today Andy we're going to talk this time about the continuous adaptive evolving Chang whatever you want to call it planning needs of organizations strategic planning when I was young uh always used to be a one-time thing you did it I don't know Q3 for the next year and then you'd execute on the plan and everything would be great but if you try that now well you're setting plans for 18 months ahead and that's just never going to work you're lucky if you don't have to change your plans 18 days ahead because everything is changing so quickly we always think of technology and and obviously at the moment AI being a major neighborhood of that but just you know Global events and and world affairs changing so quickly uh even something as simple as you know the the activities of a competitor who suddenly launches a new solution with a feature that you don't have that customers seem to love so you need to respond to that and of course you always want to try and get ahead of the customer and anticipate their meats so it's important to set plans and it's important to execute on those plans to achieve the goals and objectives but it's also important to have this concept of organizational agility the ability to adjust and adapt to plans as the world changes or as new opportunities and threats emerge and you need to sometimes change the work that you're undertaking because you know maybe we're not getting the results that we thought we' get or something isn't being bought or something's not delivering the operational improvements that we expected maybe we're just changing our priorities because of a new environmental opportunity or an environmental challenge that is emerging that we want to to try and respond to so we're actually going to shift the priorities themselves the goals and objectives which of course requires changes to happen in the work and this is going to happen multiple times you can't just say we'll do a quarterly review that'll be fine you're continuously reviewing and adapting and adjusting or at least you should be the problem is organizations have found it too difficult to do that and the default solution is to not do it which doesn't help you end up delivering on the priority that you used to have the clients have the opportunity to buy products with features that they used to think were important and we all know how that's going to turn out it's critically important that organizations recognize when they need to change and that when they make those decisions to change they can communicate the decisions quickly with context so that the people doing the work can adjust and adapt and recognize how they need to shift so that you can get back on track to back in alignment with the goals and objectives with a minimum amount of disruption you can't do that in a siloed organization you can't do that when the projects are controlled by those departments that we talked about in in the last podcast you need to have this single view this single platform that delivers the ability to change and manage the change and validate that the Chang is having the impact that you need it to you need service now SPM don't you know yes absolutely Andy and I'm just going to pick up on what you said it's h you're still young Andy and uh I bet this traditional way of um strategic traditional way of planning was like I don't know two three years ago for you uh but I absolutely all the things that you said really resonate with our customers as well and um I'm just going to talk and gen is something that is on top of mind for I would say every organization now uh but it could be something else it's all about thinking of things are moving things are changing and you need to be adaptive and strategic planning helps you to be adaptive uh traditional way of planning is not it it it inhibits uh you from um being adaptive being agile being flexible uh when things change in the market and um you need to have regular updates you need revisions you hear things from your customers in terms of feedback that you need to adjust and if you set your plan and forget for one year 12 months it's a very long time um and what strategic planning process helps you is that it's iterative it's Dynamic it allows you to adapt to changing conditions uh at the same time um helps you navigates you puts everyone on the same train to gain the object objectives of the organization where they want to go and um this cycle of identifying prioritizing uh Investments uh all the development that is going on in terms of implementing work and all these updates um help organizations um to stay competitive to deliver to their customers in terms of the value that they want and uh respond I would say very effectively and efficiently to changes and challenges and opportunities that are present in the market absolutely and I mean let's be fair it is difficult and you have to be able to analyze what's going on and determine what decisions have to be made or whether you should just stay the course and then you need to be able to communicate those decisions consistently across the organization and then you need to be able to implement the impacts of those decisions in a way that is efficient and effective and then you need to validate that everything's happened and then of course the world's still moving so you've got to go through that whole cycle again it is difficult but organizations make it harder for themselves when they're not using a solution like service now SPM that can assist with that management of everything I mean you talked about gen I mean the ability to put analytics in place to help people convert information into Insight the ability to automate workflows the ability to ensure consistent communication across the organization that kind of stuff is worth its waiting gold these days because it just Smooths the process it removes that disruption and it speeds everything up and you're minimizing the time from the decision to the implementation of the change which minimizes the time to Value it's critical for organizations to succeed you just can't succeed without something like that absolutely Andy all right well there you have it we've done two strategic planning podcast and next time we're going to talk about something that is near and dear to my heart we're going to talk about strategic planning and the role of pmos so don't miss that one and we'll talk to everybody
