Introduction

ServiceNow is huge!

There are many, many, various career paths, stages, and opportunities one can pursue in the field of ServiceNow, such as Developer, Administrator, Consultant, and Architect.

So, where do you start?

Simple.

Choose a career path that you are excited about and then go fookin' do it!

Go through the courses like an obsessed some of a bitch and take notes on what the hell did you learn.

Put or drop them somewhere like a simple website that you can get from anywhere nowadays.

I recommend using Google Blogger to start. Check my post for more info about creating a website.

Back to business!

Studying ServiceNow, taking notes, and writing short blogs about your learning experience will only make you stronger and more confident in your ability.

In doing so you'll learn different skills at the same time! How great is that!

Obviously, you'll learn about ServiceNow. But you'll also learn the beautiful skill of writing and expressing your thoughts and findings on paper which might help others as well. You never know...

Okay, enough rambling. Let's get to work baby!

Career Paths & Courses

Career Paths

If you are considering a career change to ServiceNow then these narrowed 4 choices or career roles can help you make a decision:

  1. CAS (System Admin): Take this introductory path to SN. Learn all the ins and outs before moving to options 2-4.
  2. Application Developer: Take this route since you will still need to obtain the CSA before CAD anyway. This way you can snowball into a developer position faster instead of going the Admin route.
  3. Implementer: Take this route instead as you will also need to obtain my CSA and then CIS-ITSM.
  4. Technical Project Manager: This might be the easier route to entering the ServiceNow world.

There are lots of nuances though.

Please have a look at this Reddit post for more clarification.

Once you master one of these roles you can start exploring other directions like:

Once you have decided which career path you want to pursue you can now focus on taking the necessary courses that will help you to get a job in the stage you are studying for.

Courses recommended for aspiring ADMINs / DEVs:

Start learning the basics of Javascript, there are PLENTY of free courses online. Or try right away the "Learn Javascript on the Now Platform" series of my colleague Chuck Tomasi, on YouTube:

Don't forget to join communities the ServiceNow community as well as other communities like: sndevs.com!

NOTE:

"Now, being an admin/dev, would require you to know gradually everything, especially about what is relevant to your company. Be it ITSM, CMDB, HR, CSM, or anything else.

The beauty of ServiceNow is that almost all applications work together and integrate well with each other.

You can't go wrong with scripting and "Scripting in ServiceNow Fundamentals" is a great course! I think you will like it a lot.

My recommendation is to try and practice as much as you can what you are reading about. As you rightly say, trial by fire. 😅

Get a Personal Developer Instance, try Script Includes, Business Rules, UI Actions, Client Scripts, and every other place that requires scripting. The more you practice, obviously the better it is. And Personal Developer Instances are just perfect for that."
