puts on usually every Friday as long as we're in season to just unwind for the week and code and have fun and try to build something neat this is a special episode we have a lot of guests today so we're going to get into introductions real quick but if you're this is the first time you're joining us welcome to live coding happy hour uh this is a special episode because it's hober Fest I think it starts tomorrow BEC it starts whenever the first time zone hits October 1st which is going to be uh Saturday for everybody in America and then some people who are cheating and will be awake when it actually happens is that asterid yeah okay um some people will actually be awake during that time to participate right away but hotober Fest what is that we'll get into it but first let's do some introductions hi I am Earl du I am a developer advocate here at service now and I uh do a lot of silly stuff all the program stuff fun things came from higher ed but now I'm here doing shows like this I still don't understand how they pay me to do some of these things uh and then we're going to go around and introduce ourselves oh wait oh I didn't do it I was supposed to say hi every everyone I am chopr wector of the many names and I am a mood ring admirer actually actually I collect mood rings and use them to decide what to wear every day and they match my glasses oh nice hey everyone I'm llo and I'm a huge dessert for breakfast Advocate I believe that dessert should be eaten for breakfast and have been practicing this for five years all right um and I'm Paige I am a cactus Chef so I specialize in cooking gourmet dishes using a variety of cacti it was so hard to memorize who was supposed to be next on that one cck on who should be anyways okay so it is live coding happy hour and tradition says that we should be drinking during live coding happy hours because it helps us truly get into the mindset of hey we're trying to relax we're trying to be less serious if we run into bugs that's okay and what easier way to relax is to make sure we're celebrating the happy hour idea of Life coing happy hour and so what I'm drinking today I made a uh baile espresso Martini uh with vodka so it's a little special drink for me today and then Chris what are you drinking I have homemade hop water so it's a mix of different hops that sit in water kind of like tea for six hours and then you carbonate it nice what's the difference between hot water and beer hold up no malt and no yeast so it ends up being like hop flavored Seltzer instead of beer here it's alcoholic though right oh no okay oh Mar right I stick to the tradition and I have a shuffer hover which is a German wheat beer but look at the pot it stays on oh nice that's I have a pixie berry tea complete with the bluey straw aome cabby I am drinking a random beer from my fridge I don't drink beer but it sure is here cheers Gabby awesome I I picked something local um I don't know you can see camera um local Berlin Germany based it's small Brey it's a black Rye IPA quite chocolatey pretty good happy Friday everyone and page right so I'm not much of a Beer Drinker and by not much of I mean I hate it it's gross so uh I chose something from our wine fridge which is tropical passion fruit Moscato you're drinking it from a glass not straight from the bottle so that yeah yeah I'm totally it from the glass okay October Fest so getting a little bit into it um oh October Fest we've been doing we've been doing this for seven years now with the service now developer program uh the actual event is a ho an event hosted by digital ocean uh it is they've been doing it for 10 years so this is a 10 year anniversary and then let me share my screen actually actually not yet uh hober Fest it's been going on for 10 years this is our seventh year participating in it uh we don't we just are participants in it and we realized seven years ago oh this is a fun event we should encourage people to get into open source collaboration um and maybe this is the opportunity for us to get service now people uh to try it uh and so we started hosting projects like hey you don't need to know um be a traditional developer if you work in service now contribute to these open source projects and we got you covered and we'll uh you'll get credit and you'll get the T-shirt you'll actually see a lot of us are wearing our October Fest t-shirts that we've earned over the years um so different except for Gabby you saw the chat uh we all earn shirts over the years but the the thing that happened this year is uh they decided that the costs and the logistics of sending shirts to T of thousand people around the world is too much so they decided to forgo that reward and they're go continuing on with digital rewards and uh for the first 50,000 participants they're going to plant a tree in your name and I um I'm not sure if they're doing stickers anymore because if they're not sending a shirt I don't know if they have the opportunity opportunity to send stickers anymore but in in lie of that service now uh is stepping forward and we're going to be sending shirts to everybody um that participates in hober Fest um while supplies last which actually we probably should have enough shirts to cover everybody but in case we run out we have other service now swag to uh send out to people all around the world wherever you are situated so uh we have the prizes covered okay so let's get into things um oh we're very tiny when we're in this view uh wow Earl those those uh pixel Graphics you have are really amazing like they are really from someone incredibly talented I wonder who made them you know everyone should find out and they should all message that person and um you know see uh See see if we it's actually phone number wrote that in my notes and I forgot to say it but thank I want to do I do want to say thank you to Gabby for creating the pixel graphics for all of the hober Fest crew Everybody on your screen today is part of your hober Fest crew so go see if you can match faces to the pixelized version of it uh so thank you Gabby so much for providing that it was a fun little touch for our graphics for marketing for just giving us a little bit more of a personal touch uh because one of the thing this is the next thing I was supposed to talk about in hober Fest uh the main thing about hober Fest is that it's entirely Community Driven um I may have set some repos up and some Automation and some marketing and stuff like that but it's nothing without the participation of others and so the people on you see on your screen right now uh along with some of the other crew members that weren't able to attend because we're all attending from all over the World some people are sleeping sorry India if you're watching this afterwards um thanks for watching afterwards but our crew is your people that all are part of the top five or 10 or 25% contributors of previous years so these are the people that have been contributing in the past and now are part of your reviewing team and what that exactly means we'll get into it in a little bit because we're going to try to show you what that all means um uh for everybody watching uh or everybody else on this stream watch the chat for me it's hard for me to pay attention to the chat and if you see something that's I got you cool perfect I got the other thing I wanted to mention is why it's so important for us to do this contest every year and especially because the the amount of people that participate in this um hober Fest program with us is actually not as big compared it's not that big like several hundred people in the grand scheme of thousands of people around the world seems like oh um it's not that much but to me it's important because the people that participate in this program have gone on to grow in community and we actually uh have some people on this stream right now that I'm not going to call them out because I didn't ask beforehand but only really got more involved in the service now Community after participating in hackover Fest there you go um and uh I have no doubt that asteroid would have participated eventually more in the community but having opportunities like this where you get to utilize your own service now skills to participate is a great way for you to introduce yourself to others and so if you're watching this and you've not participated before this is your opportunity to be more involved and uh even I think well every employee on the screen myself Paige and Gabby we were all part of the service now developer Community beforehand before we became employees and all of our MVPs were active in the community uh they join and lzo is going to be an MVP eventually I'm sure so he counts too no prusher no Crusher uh but yeah so we're just manifesting yeah manifesting um but that's why it's important for me for us to keep running these programs even though the footprint is smaller than our other contests uh because the people that do participate in it participate it in it very fruitfully and um have good connections with each other does anybody else want to share a story about hob Fest or anything I've been talking a lot I'm sorry it's it's okay Earl we know you get long- winded when you when you get all sappy and you know your sincerity and your honesty and your kindness slightly makes me feel bad for messing with you so much thank you for all that you do for the community hash I love Earl okay we're gonna move on all right um if you don't know the actually participate and um it's only three minutes long so it's actually pretty good video to watch if you've never done this before to get a good um overview of how it works and how to participate uh one thing I want to call out to everybody uh this is the first year that um prizes are separated um so all the stuff that my team is sending out uh is SE from digital ocean and so make sure you register in both places and so there's a link for the October Fest registration and there's a link for the service now registration you need to do both if you want prizes from both all right so make sure you do that uh links to live streams that happened so that one happened yesterday hosted by Gabby and Brad uh and then one H happened today is oh this one this is a link to this one hi okay and then below is this is the main link that you're going to look for next the projects link so when we get to this link uh this is the main repository for October Fest and the first thing you're going to want to do is go ahead and click that fork button and we'll get a little bit more into what that means but getting forking this repository is your first point that you can receive for participation in hober Fest and then you can once you do get that first point you can actually submit the service now form and start qualifying for prices sweet uh down below you'll be able to see projects so um when you get down to uh the project section we have nine projects 10 if you include the repo we're looking at right now right now uh but when I say project it's kind of it's basically um we come came up with a bunch of apps uh or repositories of information that we want people to we want you all to contribute to and so read through the descriptions um to learn about the different projects and then decide on what you want to contribute to and then between October 1st and October 31st if you successfully contribute to uh any project four times or or four projects one time any combination of then you complete the challenge you complete it on the service now side and you complete it on the digital Ocean Side um concurrently at the same time uh so this is an important place to go so get to this repository look at the different um uh projects and start thinking about today what you might want to participate in um there's some nice long- winded names here uh for projects to participate in here's Pages plants app very popular last year um at the very top is the most worked on uh repository the code snippet repository because it's an easy place to get your feet wet basically if you've never done hober Fest before and we'll actually if we have time we'll I'll do uh work on multiple of these to show you how and then below um here's us and uh the leaderboard so we actually track uh participation uh to all of these repositories live and so it's a nice little way to brag like hey I am part of the top 5% contributors this year for uh service now developed for programs open source projects and that's a really cool thing because that shows that you know open source that you're part of community that you uh know how service now and get works together Etc uh Gabby did you want to say anything about your repositories and specifically about um complexity levels and what that means for our returning veterans and a challenge to them well so uh you know the ones that he just said were like really long- winded you know I'm not insulted at all cu I spent hours trying to come up with those names just to like shoehorn in my own initials into a project like I I I think it's masterful the menu generating operations program widget is fantastic and basically this is kind of going to be a step up if you want to really test your skills and contribute to something awesome I have uh with jessyn who's an awesome MVP and a great friend of mine um she and I work together on this uh menu building application if you scroll down just a little bit you'll see the uh the actual mockup and it's awesome it builds Json menus for you but it's not done help me finish it and you get to learn custom components along the way it's a little bit complicated of the setup but we went all over that in yesterday's you and I Builder live video as well as there's a whole bunch of information in the readme that can help you get set up um and we're also here to help on sns.com so if you have any questions feel free to ask but this is definitely where you want to go for a little extra challenge this year and to contribute to like the best custom component ever created Frankly Speaking okay perfect thank you for doing that um and so what I'm going to try to do because it is live coding happy hour and I want to actually try to do some Live code I'm going to try to contribute to as many repositories as I can while all the way all the while showing you all the process of how to do that and so if you're if you never done this before hopefully this is a nice tutorial also at the same time uh if I miss anything or I make a mistake uh please call out to me okay I'm gonna hide our it's gonna be extra hard because we're here heckling him hooray okay Earl before you get started someone asked if you could show an example code snippet real quick okay let me uh so in our repositories if you pick pick the Cod this project and go to it um you'll actually see I made banners for each one too it it's pretty uh copy cat hey Banners are a thing before you were here okay uh repository the Cod the code snippet repository is a um a very low barrier to entry repository for service now professionals to contribute to it's simply a um catch all for hey is this I use this code snippet um all time in my day-to-day uh it would probably benefit others if I um like put it out there in the public and so this repository why it's so easy to participate in um is all about uh just contributing straight into these files you don't have to import this into service now you don't have to um integrate it into your instance or anything like that you can contribute to this uh simply by uh doing the following oh wait I was showing off a codes bit I I want to do a more fun one first so let me just show off a codes S it um well every most developers know what a business role is so we can go into business roles and you'll see there's a lot of things that people have said like oh um how to make mandatories attachment via business role or um how to uh move a rhythm to a catalog task or um get my direct reports business role so I I'll just I don't know which one to pick uh go to make an attachment mandatory because that I have a personal Vendetta against um and also answering our question from chat you are able to grab any of the existing issues in each repository they're all up for grabs but important to knowe don't start contributing until uh astd hits October 1st in the future or it won't count right okay so um there is a structuring this and I'll I'll when I start walking through how to contribute um this will be more clear but there is a way to format your contributions for each project so in this project you'll see when you go into a functionality it has a readme file to explain what it is and this is a there some are more complex more detailed than others but then there's also the actual code snipp it and there it is and so theoretically speaking I can just copy and paste this um uh well review the code make sure it's not um it would work for your use case and then copy and paste into your instance to see uh if it works for you so that's an example of can you go back to the read me something to know is that your contributions must actually be consist and have like actual content in there you can't just come in here and fix a spelling error and get credit for it yeah so um let's let's talk about that right now so in the spirit of uh hober Fest um you're supposed to contribute meaningfully into the repos that's the word and so in that sense hi faces um if we get a lot of people every year they say hey I contributed and they added a period to a sentence often times not even at the right spot like it's not even a good period um and what we would consider those hey all the people on the screen are doing these reviews it's not an automation we're going to actually look at your contributions and say that's spam and that is the code word for really bad for hober Fest and so if you contribute spam spammy kind of contributions uh only two if two of your stuff gets labeled as spam you are automatically banned from October Fest so keep that in mind um this is we want you to actually contribute it's not a way for you to just simply check off boxes and get a shirt and plant a tree we we want you to actually learn something from this contribute something meaningful uh and don't get banned uh every once in a while I'll glance at the chat yeah don't get banned the only two spams that being said you don't just go into them go into it not being spammy but if you if you make a mistake that is okay that's not spam we will work with you to correct the mistake Stakes to get it fixed properly and then get it um approved to be inside of our projects all right so I'm going to go back um I like contributing to slackbot so I'm going to go in here and so uh I've read through slacker bot the description and I saw oh that sounds like a fun thing for me to contribute to and I want to participate in this project the first thing you want to do uh when you are ready to start contributing is actually uh read so you want to read documentation first I'm out peace okay yeah so um I mean even Gabby spent so much time to make sure that their documentation on all those repositories are very detailed and if you go to these repositories you'll see there is a lot of detail um hey do I want an easy way to participate in this or a hard way uh below is hey if you want to go the hard route here's how to replicate this bot entirely on a different server um and add it to your instance and how to import it uh how to set up the Integrations between GitHub um to service now how to test it properly uh how do I go about setting this up in studio um and then here's a nice bread and butter or nice uh uh go-to is if you're participating in this project you want to go and see what apis are available to you and so when I'm creating code for this here's what's what is uh uh accessible to me so that I can create cool things so that's the readme file and then the second thing is the contributing file so there's a contributing file right here and a lot of our repositories have a big warning saying hey follow our guidelines in contributing if you go to the contributing file it has what is exactly required for us to approve your pull request and we what is a pull request Earl I'll explain soon um but follow before you press the submit button go read through this page and say oh did I follow these rules um before you even start working go to this page and say what rules do I need to follow so I don't have to backt trck cool so that's the read the documentation section of it all right so if there's any questions we're all here to answer questions about contributing how repos are structured how to submit things so feel free to ask questions don't just get stuck on that contributing guide and feel like you don't know what to do yeah and the main place we chat about all this is at sns.com and you join that snev workspace and we'll all there's a hober Fest Channel there and we're all hanging out on it and chatting so if you have any questions we're all there we're we're follow the sun this year we actually have people all around the world uh to help uh answer questions so utilize that okay now all the actual technical stuff I've read the documentation it still sounds like something I want to contribute to in fact I have an idea already um or I actually know I can I know how to solve one of these issues and what what do I mean by issues um I up here on every project there's a issues tab um if you click on that several people have said hey these things are broken or hey this would be a really cool um Spongebob case uh there's some fun um examples for me that I could put potentially tackle in fact I'll go into this one and I'll say so important right there this is very important um so it's a it's a chat bot everybody remember so uh it respond we have it respond to things and right now this bot responds to either text or to Emoji reactions and so this one is if some someone's saying or I guess it's me um hey if someone says the word so extra or I'm extra or space out extra respond with all of these reacts accordingly here's the example of what it looks like oh up there oh yeah so if someone says the words extra it should respond automatically with these things kind of just like have some fun flare um I'm I'm GNA tackle this one because it's an easy example to try to do uh and so I would go into this issue and say I'm assigning it to myself or if um or you would go in here and said I am going to try this try to do this so that a reviewer can say okay cool I'm going to assign it to them did someone say something I I yes so um da asked if I have no coding experience or past hober Fest experience is this something I should stay away from participating I'm asking since I am not sure if what I am capable of doing would be meaningful Astra do you have an answer yeah I I mean I have many answers so really you can do anything so there's issue contribution uh coming up with ideas and different uh elements that you think could add to that there's different repos with all different levels of Entry like um plants for example is awesome I remember last year people were uploading records of their plants so it's really learning anything anything low code as well a lot of these are apps that you could actually go in and base that off or condition based records like in uh instance scans to be honest with y'all the way that I think about hober Fest is that it's not necessarily about how awesome your contributions are it's about learning and picking up up a new skill and participating in the community because that's where all of your actual professional growth is going to come from and we try to make all of our projects that you could participate in either good for learning stretches you in your technical skills or just fun and so the pl we have a repository that just has show us what plants you have in your office and if you can contribute if you could add to the tables what your plans are that's contributing there's also some technical stuff in there so if you want to help build a portal or add to the tables or do some automation um there are some suggestions on doing stuff like that too so and then there's Pro repositories like this one for a bot and we like this one because one you get to see you can make silly stuff which is so much easier for us to you know sit down and try to code because it's fun and funny um and when you when it's approved it actually immediately goes live on the SN dev's workspace so you can actually go immediately and go try it out and test it out and see how it's working uh sweet thanks for all the watching the chat everybody appreciate you all right I'm going to start contributing because I pulled I grabbed that issue and I said I'm going to work on this so extra issue and uh the first step is you're going to go up here and you're going to create a fork so anybody on the call want to try to explain what a fork is I can explain using buckets but how about we let lasso give it a shot sure so basically when you Fork a repository what you do is you create a copy in your own GitHub account of that repository and you can decide if you want to take just the main branch or you want to take all the branches typically you're fine with just taking the default setup and just click on the create Fork button just how we it's going to do now that sounded so smart the way that I like to think about it is the repository is a pool and now forking it I make my own pool and I can make changes to my pool using my bucket which are my pull requests and when I'm done making my changes I can merge the pools together except now you were saying word pull like over and over again I might feel a lightweight uh in in technical terms you're you're basically creating a copy on your own um account and so I I need to oops I'm a part of it already ex just put it on the women out Dev don't worry okay so you would have pressed create Fork there and I apparently have a fork already let me make it up to date okay so this is now we're caught up so this is I I'm I have my own copy of the slacker bot project on my own account anything I do to it is mine no it doesn't affect anything in production it doesn't affect any other people's Forks it's mine and so uh my fork in that term of source control what that now we need to create what we call a branch which is kind of like a version um or a uh it's the easiest way to explain is like a version um it's a bucket oh my gosh uh we're going to create a bucket and we're going to say uh so extra um featuring and so now this is something really confusing hang on so this right here is the number one thing I don't like about GitHub and it's the most confusing thing because when you try to create a brand what you have to actually do can you go back just uh click on the main real quick is you're not going to be able to find a plus button anywhere what you actually have to do is you have to type the name of your branch first that you want to create and then a create button shows up that's what Earl just did and this is something that I I didn't know and this is what actually stopped me from contributing two years ago sorry I just wanted to point that out all would be solved if you follow our do documentation on too hard to read no thanks um sweet okay so I made my Branch let me go back into it now um what did I call it uh it was something or another sorry Earl I love you hashtag okay so extra features okay um what reason I'm creating a branch instead of just working on my main which like I already made my own ver my my own copy of this project why do I need to make another branch of this project another mini copy of it and that's because uh my main branch is my production for this app now and so you want to create another smaller version so that you are working on that without affecting your production branch which is your main branch and so I'm now uh separated from that and I'm going to start working on it and if I go down here and I look at ways to contribute I'm going to do the easy method of adding a new parser because that's what the issues suggesting is we create a new parser for this um and it's pretty oh look look instructions here too um and then I want to create a new Javascript file in the parsers folder and then follow the contributing guidelines and then submit it all right so I'm going to try to follow those instructions um we'll pretend that I've already gone to the bottom of here and looked a little bit at like oh how what kind of things are available to me and uh that's still confusing oh so I'm just going to go look at other people's examples and so if I look at another example um the clapback one uh I could see that according to contributing they followed the naming mechanism and here's some of the apis or some of the methods that they're using in that documentation and it's basically saying uh if someone says the word clap um and then a sentence it's going to interpace the clap emoi in between each word that's what this code is doing and then down here it says okay send send the clap emote the the resulting message back to the chat wherever that was and all that is documented so it's e so all of this can be traced and understood uh so I'm going to try to replicate something like this so that to answer a quick question in the chat um vany uh is participating for the first time and they're trying to understand how to contribute uh specifically vennie if you end up needing more help than what this video is able to provide you right now and you need more help definitely go onto the uh sv.com workspace it will uh you'll find us on the hashtag Octoberfest Channel and we can give you more stepbystep instruction don't uh stress yourself out too much if you don't get what you need from this video sweet okay um are there plans to do office hours again this year Earl yeah there is plans um I need to figure that out next week yeah so in all likelihood there will be office hours that people can come join bring questions watch us work on stuff so that's another great way to get help I love that Banner you know I'm just going to use this as an example and copy into M all right so okay we got to name it and according to this file I'm going to going back and forth a lot it says the file name needs to be what it does what it's going to be called okay so um extra reactjs perfect okay so I want it to activate um by saying uh so so extra or time extra or X ra now I want to provide a a Rex for that which I'm just going to do this live I'm gonna I uh I'm I'm extra uh it might not have an apostrophe [Music] so oh extra and extra and what he's currently doing for those of you who may not be familiar is this is Rex which is basically a magical codee for how to identify text patterns so he's he already knows how to write reject so that's what he was doing up top and now he's testing to make sure that his reject only recognizes the specific strings that he's looking for inside of sentences whether they're by themselves uh you invited me anyways if you don't know Rex like I don't know reject there's a bunch of places online that you can use to learn and to basically survive if you ever need to use reex also if you ever going to use this uh sort of Rex you'll notice that you can put as many apostrophes as you want uh because L has used an asterisk there so it will support oh yeah so technically oh my God you can be so extra I guess should put a question mark That's the correct one sorry to be difficult no it's true oh asra got him oh are you even technical oh oh my gosh I would kick you out of the stream right now if I'm not trying to get the stream going anyways okay um okay so this one is for uh sending text back which is not what I want to do actually so I need to go back to the API wait there's actually an I think there's a yeah reaction One um I'll use that one doing is he's grabbing example code from one that already works that does something similar to what he wants and he's repurposing it so it can do what he wants it to do so you don't have to start from scratch you don't have to know how this bot works you can just look at someone else's code or their parser and if it's something you think you would want to use um go right ahead and just make the changes you want to make in order to get the results you want we're all here to help each other this is where you all F in the Gap while I'm coding I got you so this is so right now what he's doing is he's actually grabbing the names of the Emoji that the bot is going to react with in order to um in order to tell it what to do so when it finds it in line nine when it reacts to uh reex a specific Rex it's going to then do those reactions and this is how I contributed oh never mind we're not using line nine I wasn't even reading I really am a lightweight but anyways um so when I first started doing uh contributing to slackbot I this is what I did I literally found one that already did a reaction and I copied it um um but to answer somebody's question in the chat Earl [Music] um if I was doing this by myself right I'm trying to I'm trying to make this reaction happen how can I then test to make sure that it works do I have to like install my own uh slack uh bot yeah so that's a great question um so remember earlier in the Stream I was saying ways to contribute there's an easy way and the hard way the easy the easy way is if you understand like what is happening or the thing you're creating is so like there's not that much chance for me to get this wrong like this one this one's um I literally copy pasted half of this code so it's I love that code hey if you understand the code just by reading documentation if that's your kind of forte then you don't then you're probably good to go to submit this and um one of us will look at it and be like yeah that's that's right that will work if it doesn't we'll create an issue what was that Chris you got a lot of problems there do I yeah do you need help you're right oh you got some uh Undeclared variables on the end there I'm I'm not done but it's thank you for pointing it out I'm not okay is that the only thing I did yeah regular expression that's going to run every time uh yeah where's your Rex matches right you don't have an if statement I don't need it what no because the re is GNA be running according to this up there magic yeah so the the one I copied I'll explain why um the one I copied uh from this contributing the reason why there's an if statement here is because it's trimming it so it needed to do it um uh it needed to get rid of the clap part of the sentence and so I'm I'm taking it replacing clap with just the other words and then feeding it back so if I'm just sending reacts you actually don't need an if statement here because it's wait oh this is a different kind of Parts here okay I don't want to get two in the weeds um just read the document I don't I want to make sure I finish at least one use case um before we go but uh if you want to do the um full testing of your things so like I said if you want to do the easy way because you can you read the documentation seems a little bit easy to do or you have you're going to tackle something easy or ask for help yeah or ask for help um but if you want to do the full I want to create my own bot on my own instance and run a test um in my own thing and make sure it's working before I submit a contribution then uh if you go to hard method then um you'll actually can go through the documentation and see how how to set this up in your own workspace and your own service now instance and then test it accordingly um including hey how do you po I want to populate my bot with all the parts other people have come up with we actually already provided a UI action to do that so you'll just click a button and it'll sync with our repository and everything okay so going back to this I we're just going to test it okay so I'm I think I'm done with this code I'm going to say I'm done I um uh give it a good description when someone good descriptions are very important people don't just do what I do and just make your commit messages be stuff like socks or ah don't look at my commit to my repositories please it's me begging the stuff to work so I'm creating a file um you'll see my create so extra react is now recorded in my my version of the app the project and um I can still make changes to other um files as I need and then when I'm done creating uh files editing files fixing other people's bugs uh this banner up here will say Hey you have your branch is now ahead of other people's branches of of the main one do you want to submit this and so submitting it is the same is what pull request is and I try to explain this um once a year because it can be comp complicating when you're new to get there's a lot of terms that you might not be used to and we've been saying some of them Fork um and we've been alluding to this thing called pull request there's some easier ones like issues issues is easy to understand um commit is another one um but what a pull request is is a the idea that you are requesting someone to pull your code into their repository um uh if you want to even understand it a little bit more a commit is another way of saying push when I press that commit button I pushed my code into this Branch into this repository and so I pushed my code into it and now I'm going to create a pull request and I'm going to say hey I would love for you all to pull my code out of my repository and push it into your repository that is what a pull request is and that's why they have that terminology of push and pull inside git that's literally what we're doing with our code okay and so you'll see up here it already started um setting up some of the uh stuff for me it's saying the code see the arrow pointing left the code from my branch in um my repository C ear duk slackbot I'm requesting that someone um pull my code and push it into production which is the service now Dev program version of of the the bot on the main branch and that main branch is our production Branch um if you go into contributing again you'll see that it says like hey you got to be detailed um with what you're doing um if you're solving an issue this is your opportunity also to say uh where is my issue hold on let me go back to the issue real quick um I'm solving this issue which is issue number 2011 I can even say solves number 211 and that's a fun little automation that helps our reviewers uh because it autoc closes issues if it's approved and I'm going to say hey I think I'm ready I'm going to say create pull request and it's going to do some checks make sure there's no um anything broken and now we're switching over to a review review so I'm going to take a step back and do my little illustration of saying oh I'm changing hats I'll take off my submitter hat and putting on my reviewer hat and now um I am a reviewer and I'm looking at this and I'm saying oh I'm going to look at the code it looks like they added a file here it is um I'm spending so much time making sure it looks correct and uh they're reviewing it um they approved it oh no approve button why can't I approve oh I have to assign it to myself anyways I'm just GNA merge it oh um someone's going to look at it approve it and they're going to merge it into their into the main production Branch so merging basically means yes we're going to pull your code and now let's all um uh put our faces back while I make sure to put Co while I open up screens and hide stuff to so I can test it on slack it worked did it work already it worked uh hold on yeah Gabby's over here telling us how extra she is I'm trying to see how do I Channel thing how do I hide my channels uh you can't share partial screen why don't you just right click on the channel and click it open a new window and just share that window oh you can do the Little Triangle that's smart too okay so let me uh share my screen again hasn't drank at all he's been too busy talking and telling everyone how to do this it's a lot we've been drinking on his behalf it's okay oh my God Chris I love your nails I'm drinking okay so we're in um uh the the SL the channel for the bot and so um we're going to say uh that's boom Works already yay check October Fest we're having an extra party in there I wait oh you said it you fixed it I fixed it no I wanted my apostrophes to be extra good job ER we accomplished something today and so that was fast right like well I I knew the documentation so that's why I was able to contribute but once you read through it once um ask us some questions get some clar ification and it should be pretty straightforward on how to create some of these new parsers and we have some wild stuff in these parsers um one of my favorites is the International Space Station one um it checks where the International Space Station is and gives a map of where it is and that's just a simple that's all contained um in a one parser this is the code that so if you want to learn how to call the intern check the International Space Station location you can look at this code and see what I did to do that um that's not even one of the slack is that a slacker one oh I didn't I thought I didn't realize that was a second one I don't know man the bot responded it tells us what time it is an Astra time so we can make so we can tell her to go to bed and stop hanging out or we can see if it's too early to uh you know start bothering her oh go ahead Chris talk about it there's a question in the chat can multiple people work on the same issue at the same time uh yes technically um and so uh that's a great question so if you if I go back to issues um did it close it should have closed it should have automatically closed Why didn't it do it anyways well I'll figure that out um the best the best thing to do is if you find an issue that you want to work on you should go into it and press and comment saying I'm going to work on this uh doing that comment M allows a reviewer to be able to assign it to you we can't assign it to you until you make a comment so that's that so everyone should be able to see who else is working on it if someone else is working on something that you're working on and you want um also to work on it that's you can do a number of things you can either uh inquire with them say hey what's your progress on this I would love to contribute or work with you to work on it you could say I'm going to also work on it and first one wins suck it like we don't have rules for that so we've never encountered that so far so go for it um yeah uh and that basically ends what I was doing now I now I can go back to my Fork um oops uh click the drop down you can go to your fork and um I can create another branch of another thing in fact I could have um pressed submit pull request and then go back to my um fork and create a new branch and start working on a death another um feature right away without waiting for another person always go the best thing I could remind people to do one feature per Branch or one whatever you want approved uh independently from each other should be all its an own Branch because pull requests attached to branches so if you have if you're working on four features and um one of them potentially might not get approved you should be putting them on separate branches because if that one is if they're all on the same branch and we can't approve one of the features then all of it gets cancelled so be aware of that yeah and a little extra piece to that too is that while your poll request is open it is linked to that Branch so if you add any new code onto that Branch while that PLL request is open it's going to get added to that poll request so if there's changes to your poll requests like we need some uh formatting updates you can commit more code to that branch and it'll automatically update that poll request for you that is right and that extends even to when those are closed so if someone goes through and closes your pull request because it's not quite um ready in its current state or there's a lot of feedback needed don't don't be disheartened uh you can still go through and do those commitments take on that feedback come and ask us in the chat maybe don't come after after us with you know knives and weapons because we closed your pull request without merging it but um what you can definitely reopen and rep push those three astred also has a correction for earlier she posted it in the chat but do you want to say it here too you're on mute it helps if I take myself off mute uh so there's a bunch of different keywords and I just shared this in the H hackathon uh hackathon hober Fest chat um in the slack as well again going to plug sns.com because a lot of us will hang there um but uh there's a set of keywords that you can use solves is not one but all of these ones are so that will link it together and like H said we don't have to then go and find the issue in the army of issues because of all the broken code that people poy pasted I mean I would never uh but to uh then automatically close that issue did I straight up use the one word that doesn't work the one word the one synonym of that word that doesn't work cool cool Co you were doing it live you had to use the wrong word okay true it wouldn't be live cutting happy hour um I really wanted to do a code snippet one but I think I don't I don't think we're going to have time we I spent more time on this one I guess we were explaining every step of the way so that's okay all right the one the last thing I wanted to show is um our Point spot is also on here if you want to contribute an easy way to do is you can add Milestones to it um and so whenever someone gets like 20 points then it says hey you got it says a special text for that instead of just saying you have 20 points now um we have special ones for uh a bunch of different ones thousands we got some Easter egg ones and stuff like that there uh I if everyone remembers the last Easter egg one we added I just remembered it and I'm not going to say it out loud if you don't okay I'm we'll talk about it later um I made this little Banner too I like your banners a lot though oh cool I don't know I think my banner is is the best I do agree I think Paige's plant Banner is the best it is in fact I spent so much time like hard work two minutes yeah pretty much I spent more time uh trying to figure out how to upload it and get it to show on the readme than I did actually make making it that what is it huh what plant is this oh I have no idea I just Googled uh plant um pixel image or something like that wonderful transparent background so so something I'd like to add in the dying minutes of that one as well is uh you might have noticed when ear had that screen up just before there was about 10 little pictures of different people contributing when you contribute with your profile and you've done a pull request and it's gotten accepted your face your name goes onto that list you become a contributor you're you've then been immortalized inside that repository uh and additionally to that a lot of these there's some where you can go in and just post them easily but there's a lot of content Earl wrote some great stuff last year about connecting your instance to GitHub so you can then go through and Associate um and do create those records create that data um but also get to learn how to do Source control in a different way than just updates it from A to B to C yeah thanks ASD um and all a lot of this is solid nerd cred so like you start showing all the ways you participate oh look it must be October when the lights start getting more active again um and how often uh apparently I'm a lot more on the pushing side as as opposed to review side oops um and just kind of cool things that you get to see oh and here's some digal awards from last year so this board fills out as I get October first stuff so that's part of the digital Awards sweet um I want to uh acknowledge that usually
