Comment Desk 001
[Music] hey everyone it's Justin thank you for watching and welcome to my house specifically the comment desk yes the comment desk is going to be a new series it's going to be variable it's not going to come out on a particular day of the week it's just going to come out as needed and I'm going to try to cover comments I get comments on the channel and there you know as the channel has grown they're kind of uh a lot to keep up with so I'm just going to go through these I'm not going to make you watch me respond to them but I do want to some of them ask thoughtful questions and I want you to see the way I think about things and how I might research things so that you might start to understand a little more so let's get started um let's see my head's kind of in the way for uh what the video is but I'll kind of talk through it so this first comment is from user with a bunch of random letters and numbers uh N9 days ago worked perfectly very helpful and that was for my integrate jira service now stepbystep video so uh hey Mr user love it love it love it thank you so much I'm glad that helped um E1 2000 responded to service now's uh new application manager thanks Justin informative well thank you Eon for watching I appreciate it uh drone pilot uh on the video configuring a custom menu and service now all right uh here's the first question at first thank you for your video you're welcome I'm glad it helped you now for his question is it possible to put direct links I.E the internet into the new top menu thank you in advance hm um so let me go actually look uh so it's been some time that was a Tokyo video uh we've been through Utah and uh now Vancouver and let's see what was I showing in that so if we look at the first couple of seconds I'm going to mute here of that I was showing the unified navigation menus and there was the admin menu it looks like under unified navigation menus and then me add adding some menu items down below um okay so let's hop over to my PDI see if we can answer this question for him um we'll search for unified navigation menus unified let's see yeah they're still there in Vancouver good to know I've got my all favorites history workspaces admin um I think I was showing in that video the admin menu let's go take a look at that again um no my menu I created my own menu and then I was pointing to things and he specifically wants to know if he can point to other things like the internet um that's a great question I and I can see where you might want to do that so I don't have my my menu in this particular instance so let's go ahead and create my menu again uh like we had before we won't put any roles on it we'll make sure it's active and hit submit I'll refresh my page let's see if that menu shows up at the top after I refresh I don't see it yet but that could be because there's nothing in it I noticed the order on this default to do 100,000 um so 1 2 3 4 5 from the out of box ones let's go into my menu and uh should look kind of like I did before yeah there's my unified navigation configurable menu items um and uh menu is active I don't have any headden or visible roll so still not sure why it's not showing but let's go ahead and create something new in there and we've got an application or module we can select from okay so this answers the question for that user no I can only select something that is in the application menus that you configure and service now so if you've configured an application let's go to application menus um and the system definition this is what that's referencing the module and the application is referencing what you build out here in application menu so let's go ahead and leave the page and complete this thought so there's um the different menus so if we were looking at wasn't one one of those unified navigation um no it wasn't like obviously uh let's see let's search for unified navigation is how I got there unified navigation menus was under the now experience framework okay so that should be one here now experience there it is now experien framework and then that has some modules underneath which you can see here and one of those was unified navigation menus all right so um let's pretend uh actually I think we can do this I think I can I think I'm going to reverse my answer and say Yes um I'm in my Justin's house application I don't want to modify this particular menu so let's go back and let's go into let's just create a menu I'm going to do new um we're going to call this demo for YouTube menu and uh we'll leave it category it's going to be my Justin's house application I'll hit submit and now I'm going to add uh let search for it demo CU I'm still searching for now experience there's demo for YouTube menu now I'm going to add a a module let's see if this module can link to the internet like that guy was asking I'm not going to use the internet let's just use um um H who should we use Google we be really creative there um this could be your your internet there and we'll do a link type of uh let's see URL from arguments and I'm just going to say I don't want to do a relative URL so I'm just going to say dubdub dub. google.com and uh let's see if that works submit and I'm going to refresh my page so that should reload the menuing system there and let's go to all and demo for YouTube or just demo there's Google and it didn't do what I expected uh interesting it went back to my instance I have a feeling that has to do with the yeah I can see barely in the URL that it's trying to so let's go back and take a look at that uh application menu and let's go to Google I know I've seen documentation link maybe that maybe that's what I want documentation link let's update that see if that works now we'll refresh our menu or refresh our entire browser to get that new menu and demo Google okay he did the exact same thing I did so he put in url from arguments to google.com and it didn't work uh after clicking it takes them the same thing it did to me it does relative to the URL please try giving URL in the format oh which is what I did um as manic suggested type complete URL also field window defines Target where the URL were open leave it blank if you want to open in the content frame otherwise use underscore blank to open in a new tab well that I didn't do but I don't think that's going to change the actual URL let's head back over there and uh let's change this back to URL from arguments give it a blank window but I still got the same thing htps ww w.google.com so let's save this there's no options down here to change any of that okay we'll refresh I still don't think this is going to work but we'll try demo Google hey what the heck it actually works all right let's I'm actually surprised okay it actually works so let's change the url uh to make sure this is not defaulting to my search page we'll will change it to bing.com all right give some Bing love in my video here and we'll refresh this okay so I think I'm close to answering this guy's question I've got a long way to get there but uh let's go all demo and then Google takes me oh no it's taking me to Google did I not save this still going to google.com instead of bing.com um let's try refreshing again hope I don't have to clear the cache just to get that particular update demo it's still saying Google I mean it's named to Google but I change that let's change the name of it to Bing and we'll refresh the browser again demo okay change the name and it changed the address all right sweet we're taking to Bing okay so this guy was wanting to know if we could put that in that menu so let's go back to unified menus unified navigation menus I've got a new menu for my menu and uh let's see if we can add that Bing uh it was a module that I created so let's just search bingg there it is I think we might be on to something we'll hit submit now I've got module um it's actually there the Bing it's showing Bing oh my my menu showed up here there's Bing look at that okay we did it we fix it out uh bing so I was able to add an external link by adding it to the application menus um so creating an application menu and then creating a module of an external or a URL from arguments having it open in a new tab and it opened uh correctly so um the I will update that post later but we'll let uh who is a drone pilot know that yes you can do it watch this video to see how to do it and it's definitely possible so up to the next comment um extend your instant sessions timeout was the video that was one I did last week um and this guy Jay Griff 650s wants to know for production I'm curious if there's a difference in timeouts based on local logins versus adfs are you aware all right um in that video I was in the CIS properties uh cisor properties. list and um I was searching I basically my PDI was timing out every 5 minutes um so I would recommend you look at so I just searched there's 35 properties around timeout um I don't there's the one I have UI session timeout so here's my response I think I would make sure you look at all the different timeout options number one um but number two this is a session timeout so this is a service now session regardless of how you authenticated right so if you authenticated with adfs if you authenticated with something else some other product I just don't want to name a bunch of products um once you're authenticated then service now is handling your session and then so this property controls how it handles that session and when it wants to um time out and reauthenticate you and then it'll go back to something like adfs so I think the answer uh to your question um Mr jgriff or 650s is that um there shouldn't be a difference for local login versus adfs because once you're authenticated and logged in that's when that session timeout applies so um I will definitely update that with my thoughts there um let's see Simon Henry 3048 nice thanks for tracking that property down oh same video extend your instance timeouts uh I found a 90minut timeout annoying as well it looks like so yes uh love it Simon thank you for watching thank you for uh being part of the channel uh next is Jen Dawn 100 very cool thanks for this and this would response to my Mac OS automator open close Microsoft teams on my schedule this has actually been a pretty popular video and um this week I had to change how that worked how do I show you this um let me open up the automator so let's search for I don't know if this is going to show on the video or not but we search for automator yeah so in automator I had the launch and close Microsoft teams this is what it looked like here and this is what he's talking about I had to change it because Microsoft renamed teams to Microsoft teams classic because they're rolling out a new rebuilt rearchitecturing here again and change that but this has been a like a I've really enjoyed this feature so thanks janun 100 glad it like you liked it and it worked for you I'll update this comment with what I just showed on the video so definitely check out this video if you have time all right next up uh I got a long one here from deran knite 3997 uh 6 days ago on my video integrate jir and service now step byep another really popular video didn't expect that I mean I kind of suspected it would be but all right he says thanks for this great video you're very welcome uh thank you for watching I am currently working on a project to build a bidirectional integration between service now and jir and while researching I came across a video where you can integrate incidents directly into jir using the integration Hub without first creating slon converting incidents into stories in adile which seems to be the case here since this is the out of the boox integration only integrates J with agile 2.0 all that's true in fact that's the way I recommend to do it if you don't want to reinvent and do everything he was therefore wondering which integration you would recommend because uh the integration Hub is bidirectional too and uh kindly please advise okay so I'm going to pontificate a little bit um whenever you can do less work number one go for the less work number two service now is maintaining that integration between jira and agile service now agile right so that's going to continually like jir is going to update their API service now is going to update their API and because that plug-in exists they're going to maintain it so if you CH choose to go the integration Hub route you're going to have to maintain that integration between incidents and jira um if the jir API updates or that spoke updates that you're referencing you're going to have to go in and fix things and change things that still might apply to the previous case but there's some underlying logic in that application that's looking for updates here updates there and pushing and pulling and doing stuff that you're going to have to recreate if you use the spoke so in the spoke you're going to have to create web hooks over in jira those web hooks are going to have to call something in service now so you're going to have to have something in service now to be called and then you're going to have to take action on it so think about that right you're having to build out all that stuff so let's that's the integration piece so that's why I recommend staying with what's out of the box now let's go into iil mode all right so if you're familiar with iil um there's the concept of Incident Management um and Incident Management is something that's broken and not working for the user when you are working with teams outside of the ticketing tool you need to make the assumption that you send a task related to an incident out to that external tool that external tool they do something and then it comes back and um if you integrate directly with incident you're you're basically going to have to map those States between an incident and that uh request or that item in that external system and uh that might NE necessarily actually resolve the incident okay this is where I get into hey there you you may need to open more than one task in jira or that external application so from an itel perspective that incident is not resolved until youve verified with a customer that it's resolved if the closing of that task in the external system automatically closes the incident in service now if that's the way you design it um you may not get the chance to verify that's all kind of theory you know whatever you might have an opinion one way or the other so number one I think Justin thinks that there should be the ability to have more than one task related to an incident right the incident record um exists and the source of Truth is in service now and if you need something done by another team that's a task you send out to that other team it may be one team that does the dev part it may be another team that goes and goes to another person's computer and verify something so you want to build in a way that allows for all those scenarios all those situations all right so let me wrap this up so if you build incident directly to jira then you are not accounting for those other use cases where more than one task might need to be completed um and then also there you may not actually fix it so the devb team might roll out a fix PR it to production but that incident is still active because it's still broken for the user so from a integration perspective easier to use what service now has already built from an iil perspective and true incident man I think you should spawn off tasks to these external systems and those tasks should come back to service now and someone makes a decision automated or uh a person a human makes a decision is this incident really resolved so you probably didn't expect that much from asking that question but that's Justin's opinion and uh I hope that's helpful I'll update this uh I'll give you a briefer one and say go watch this video but all right uh next up uh man Nan Manan 6166 uh whoops let's change my pen there to a rectangle can you please create a video how to set up step-by-step bit bucket account link to service now with commit and all get operations and this was on my video for bit bucket and service now link commits sories man I think I did that video like a year ago um so can I I guess I could um do I have it on my forecast on my list to do not right now but what I'll do Manan 6166 I'll put it on my list um I will put this request for doing that um to link it and if you could I'm going to comment on here but if you could kind of detail exactly what you're looking for so this says a step-by-step bit bucket account link to service now with commit and all get operations so are you expecting to kind of see and have visibility into all the commits in service now like a list of them or are you wanting to link them to something if I could get a little more clarity on the use case there um I can see some cross over with devops the devops product from service now that gives some visibility to that and that might be a video I can make or it could be something else you're looking for so I will comment I will get this on my list number one I will comment to give you um ask you for a little bit more detail about the specific use case and then we might able to to figure something out there so next up uh bath ojur VA 3951 uh reports are opened in same tab as previous report is displayed new report should be opened in new adjoining tab in workspace dashboard can you help me on this um this is the new dashboard experience and service now platform analytics workspace um reports are open in the same tab as previous report is displayed new report should be opened in New adjoining tab in workspace okay I think I underst understand what he's saying so let's go over back to my PDI let's see workspaces platform analytics workspace um I think my dashboard Justin's house should show up up here let's go yeah Justin's house is there um and so I think he's saying is that when he clicks on a report it should open in a new tab um so these are like little reports right and if I click on uh there's an SSH episode if I click on that see how it opens in a new tab so I think that's what he's saying if I open up uh let's look at my idea backlock is 438 um let's look at the features to review if I open the features to revieww it opens in a new tab so I'm not sure exactly U why his wouldn't be opening in a new tab let's head back to that comment reports are open in same tab as previous report is displayed new report should be opened and new adjoining tab in workspace dashboard can you help me with this um so I don't know I I that's not how it's working for me in my instance in my PDI so I don't know why it's doing that for you um this is the thing about service now is troubleshooting is an art um service now has a great great community site you can go there you can post screenshots um you can do attachments YouTube comments are a really really hard way to troubleshoot and you know my full-time job is helping people with service now so um I don't know why yours is behaving that way I'd love to help you but now maybe the now Community is a better place for you to go get help um because I'm not able to reproduce what you're seeing I'll update the comments and say hey I'm not seeing the same behavior I need some more details um and you may want to go to now Community um to get some help there all right we got the last one here uh from riman hant roshi man roshi mahant hope I said that right um oh this is on oh man I have to tell you about this so the great video thank you for sharing so many details in such a short duration and this is for my service now visual task boards in real life one of my most popular videos I've only been doing this a year and change um but the vtb or visual taskboard video is a crowd pleaser people love it it's on my list to get this into the next experience um and uh I'm going to figure it out one day I have't yet but thank you rosha mahant um I'm glad you liked it I'll update the comment here and we'll give you a heart right now but that's it that's the comments for this episode of the comment desk I hope you found this video helpful and the format and understanding kind of my thinking around things and how I troubleshoot and look at things um uh again I hope you found this video helpful if you did please like Please Subscribe or share with somebody who you think might be interested in one of the comments or stuff that was covered in this particular video where we jumped around all over the place and until next time don't forget to always be
