all right I have one after let's go ahead and get started uh good morning good afternoon and good evening everyone and Welcome to our webinar um you're probably saying to yourself hey you're not John uh so I'm Steve Emerson you probably are familiar with me um I am filling in for Gian on this webinar and he'll be back next month but you know but but first of all I want to thank you all for being here uh and today we're going to cover how to execute application patterns with agent client collector and today's session is of course part of the item visibility and governance webinar series and we hope you will join us for future events now today's session is also part of the live on servicenow program so what is that um this is a a series of events that will connect you with experts here at servicenow and your peers as well to help you be able to better deploy servicenow products and gain faster time to value and you can see the complete schedule here of upcoming events by clicking on that link that was in the chat or by using that QR code and this is across all servicenow products not just itom and so we hope you will join us for a future event or meet up there as well just a few housekeeping items before we get started here uh so everyone's line is muted um you will also be able to use the Q a feature to ask your questions throughout the session uh please feel free to introduce yourself when you ask a question because we'd love to know who you are maybe what your role is and then of course throughout the day we're going to have a few polls I think we have three prompt you with a survey to fill out we always appreciate your feedback because it helps us improve these sessions for the future so I'm Steve Emerson and I'm one of the outbound product managers here at servicenow that cover item visibility and itom governance and I'll be your host for today's session uh so as an outbound PM I wear many hats I'm a product evangelist I help customers achieve value I focus are on training our sales teams for how to sell the product to you guys so if they don't do their job correctly that is a reflection on me so I'm sorry about that uh but what I love most about my role is that I get to meet with you all of our customers to hear how you are using our products and then of course we get to share how our product can help you achieve value across your business now I've been here for six years uh and I've been working in the service now um ecosystem for 10 years uh as a customer partner and an employee but our main presenter for today is Severn so seven please give us a quick introduction well thank you very much Steve for for this series and this session in particular so my name is here I'm a senior manager in the item inbound product management team so my primary function here is to drive a product roadmap and today I'm very excited to present you some great new content that we have published so far on the Innovation lab I joined servicenow about three years ago as pm and yes here we are so we can get started thank you awesome thank you siren and then behind the scenes here we also have uh Doug and Ryan who are going to be answering your questions as well and they are from our awesome product success team so thanks guys for being here so I'd like to start today's session with a quick poll uh we'd like to understand let me get back to here and launch the poll where are you in your agent client collector Journey you may be asking what is ACC you may be doing a POC right now in sub production you may be undergoing an architecture review board or or a Security review you may be rolling out ACC as a pilot in sub production and you may be already be using this in production so just take a few more moments here to answer this poll before we turn it over to Severn to get started with the day we see lots and lots of answers coming in so I'm going to leave it here just for a few more moments I will close the poll in five four three and two and one let's share the results of everybody so as we can see um we have a lot of you who are performing a POC that is the highest percentage that's great to hear um a lot of you don't even know what ACC is we have plenty of webinars where we're going to cover that uh today is not going to be an overview of ACC but certainly we can follow back up with some links for you um we have some of you that are going through an Arab Security review some are rolling it out as a pilot and some of you are using it in production so thank you all for that feedback um I'll stop sharing and so everyone I believe at this point I can turn it over to you thank you very much Steve let me share my screen here we are on this side all right all right so today's session is about pattern execution first I would like to to give a quick introduction on what the agent is and how it does compare with your traditional service no discovery so let's get started the agent is a quite similar in in the data set that we collect um compared with a horizontal Discovery however the mechanisms that are involved are quite different so um on the horizontal Discovery you will set up your credentials your IP ranges speed up the mid server and set up your Discovery schedules once you have that the mails will try to connect to every system in both IP ranges and get some information out of these and on the agents solution this is a push-based model where instead it is the agent that connects to the mid server stays connected with a mid and when women of course constantly with servicenow instance looking at what it looks like on a regular system I will just pick up here let's say windows professional on Azure you will find the regular data points on the assets information Rhymes CPU via set ID Etc you will find the operating system information the DNS we populate the name out of that as well as some related tables so partitions storage devices file systems TCP connections install software etc etc as you enable with ACC as you enable also some Discovery schedules for your Cloud environments using the rest apis you will have the complete topology from the CI computer CI populated by the agent so cmdbci computer with a relationship to the virtual machine instance VM instance record that comes from cloud discovery and from that CI record you will have a whole topology of your Cloud environment thus if you enable tags if you have some tag policies in your Cloud environments you can for example enable tag based service mapping enables some governance with Target governance policies around that in more details your agents as they register they will go to they will connect to the med they will then identify themselves They will receive a first set of plugins that are originally hosted on servicenow instance but these plugins will be then synced down to the mids and the Agents we just fetch those assets ACC plugins back to the agent back to the Target system running the agents in the cache directory as it executes for Scripts that payload will be generated either on demand like at the time the agent starts and gets registered or using a policy ACC policy that is configured to be executed on a given interval so for example once a day once it is pushed once the policy is pushed to the agent the agent will keep extracting that data so executing those scripts get the data points and ship them independently individually through the made back to servicenow instance what it looks like when we execute when the agent executes for scripts let's have a look I can go to the agent record as I have a relationship over here I go to a recent eccues if you need to collect data points on demand you can click on collect host data by the way I see Ryan is on the call thank you very much Ryan for this collecting software KB article we published just a couple of couple of weeks ago recent eccues we can see just for today that I only got input messages coming from the agent let's open these two see what we've got in it there we go I do have data collection specifically for software installations given that there is a lot in software installations we prefer having a distinct policy for this that way we don't have uh we don't induce a a spike on CPU load every time you just want to have a quick Refresh on the data points on your target systems so you have a distinct policy for that but the concept is the same here you have a payload that is in the output you can see that basic inventory serial numbers I do have here all of my windows hot fixes etc etc you see the object ID this is how we then do the magic to tie back the computer back to the cloud instance as you have the list of running processes it may be on on this one there we go you have those running processes you have some TCP connections as well that are populated into the cmdb we will go through the process how do we call that again classifiers or classifications process classifications to create an empty shell application so if I take the example of a postgres or MySQL Apache Etc the agents out of the box until now it does not execute parents so you will just have a simple classification for that record so if I have a MySQL for example I should see that role for process classification that will store the TCP Port where it's listening on and a very basic information so just like the name and that's pretty much it of course we do not trigger that portion with the horizontal pattern with a simple agent so this is where we stop out of the box and I do have an example here I believe a list of my sequel Mario DB systems I will pick one that doesn't have a version this one but you can see you just have this empty shell application we don't know about the version we don't have any tracked configurations files so this is what you have once you deploy the agent from the store okay right let me close across a few tabs and go back to the slide deck so comparing the architecture one of the benefits with the agent is that it doesn't require a mid server running on Windows if you want to get the information from a Windows system it's using TCP https on the very top so it's independent from the operating system running the mid server IPv6 is supported in in both environments uh so uh this is not important here and now when we compare the data points this is where we see that we have pretty much parity between the agents and the horizontal Discovery except that the agent uh we we do not support the uh let's say traditional Unix systems like hpeox Solaris or AIX we focus on Windows Linux and Mac OS in particular for endpoints of course but in the set of data points we have pretty much parity in on each side but with the agent we also collect additional information that can be very useful for additional use cases for Hardware asset management software Asset Management security as well setups use cases for example we can report on local users registered on the system and try to drive them back maybe to uh to the user from the uh from the ldap directory and see if a user is still part of the company that can be very useful also to detect shared accounts potentially so accounts that do not map to a personal user on service not Discovery we do have some features like application patterns file based Discovery and of course service mapping top down and machine learning capabilities that are not yet supported with the agent so I think it's a good time now to have a quick pause any question Steve before we get to the poll there's a quick question about I recall there were plans to allow ACC to connect directly to the instance without going via mid server has that functionality been canceled so this is not canceled this is part of our new solution that is coming out called digital end user experience for the first use case and maybe seven you can talk about what potentially we might be able to do with ACC on its own yes we do have uh uh quite a uh I mean very good use cases but we have announced at knowledge 23 um as as usual it is recorded public we cannot uh communicate anything about roadmap ETA Etc but this will support indeed our deex product but we announced at knowledge so if you do have your account still on on our community site I believe you should be able to revisit the content we published at knowledge it was just two three months ago thank you thank you um there's some questions about what we're going to cover next so I'll leave those here if you're just a moment but stuff that maybe we could just help people understand is how do we just do questions around this but I'll kind of kind of group them together one of them is about getting last use date for Windows 10 um and I presume any version of Windows that for that matter and then also customer wants to understand how does software metering work thank you very much Steve for that so we do have a webinar that was recorded I believe Steve back in November last year so I highly encourage you to consult this webinar and we can share the link in a few moments but it is a registered referenced in the webinar series from Steve so please have a look we have a one-hour recording just on that to explain those use cases and very likely we'll do a follow-up at some point uh not sure this year we'll see or maybe early next year yeah I'll drop that link into the chat um but also want to let everybody know that in the August release of agent client collector we introduced the ability to meter software on Mac OS as well so that is now available so total usage yes got the last used finally we got the total usage on Mac so we have parity with what we collect on Windows there are some additional steps to to enable it on Mac and so please follow the instructions in the KV it's very exciting thank you man all right you can proceed all right time for next poll so understanding uh from your perspective with the data points that we have published um are from your top use cases are you good with what the agent collects out of a box um do you have maybe some custom attributes you may need to collect here and there you may have custom attributes in your cmdb and therefore you have to adapt them if you were used to horizontal Discovery for that we gave a webinar on how to expand the agent capabilities will be no earlier this year on that subject you may have some requirements for deep dive Discovery for your applications on servers in particular you may not be ready yet to get a ACC deployed so we want the not applicable option on this poll and any other if if you want to add some comments feel free to to send us a note and I believe still we do we do have a poll a survey right where we leave it open for our attendees if there's something you're interested in or you want to reach out to us after this webinar please use that for us yes absolutely all right well I'm glad to see that um this session is quite useful for this deep dive visibility on applications is a must so that means Steve it was with at least preparing that webinar that's great we have 30 37 on this one and then quite balanced on Need for ACC additional use cases and uh out of a box is good enough thank you very much so you can close that window here and as I let's say before I announced patent execution on Innovation lab it was common for me to have that slide deck where I compared the capabilities of agent based and credential based discovery and I waited for someone in the audience to say but what about python execution and something that we say I'm glad you asked because I was ready for that I was ready for that question so now this is happening we do have a mechanism to execute steps of parents to be more specific and the starting point for you is to enable pattern execution with ACC from The Innovation lab I'm gonna keep repeating that for a couple of times if you want to have a look now in Innovation lab you can activate that Plugin or that application on the store on your sub-production instances you have to request it and then I will approve it straight away so let me show you what it looks like four servers not for endpoints out of a box right for servers we provide the mechanism to go beyond the creation of that shell application CI which I was showing somewhere and I closed it already that was a bicycle recorder and as we make that decision uh you know in the process classification do we just create virtual Ci or do we do something else this is where we will enable the magic so the agent behaves just the same way it normally collects data points for the OS it has no um how we say understanding of what a pattern is so over here we do have the agents that sends this payload back into vccq that is being processed so you have a not business school but a scheduled event it will pop up that easy eccq message unpack that payload and stop the data in as it goes through TCP connection and running processes it will then follow this mechanism for the process classification but this time it will go through the pattern execution so it will put an entry in vccq and ask limit server please execute this pattern for that Target system to enable this this Behavior you do have a sys property so by the way on community I posted a while back you have a KB article where I provide the steps to make it happen so I encourage you to click on that link and have a look from there this is the application on the store and a few other steps so on your instance you do have this property system property as you turn it to fall we will go through pattern execution so what happens then the maid will still orchestrate the poison of instance orchestrates the execution of the button the mid we proceed with the execution of the parallel but the difference is when it executes the pattern instead of trying SSH to connect to the Target system or Powershell with uh winrim or wmi it will just use the connection it has already coming from the agent tell the agents please execute that command the agent will then execute it locally and it will return it back to the mid server for the rest of the processing of a pattern so let's give some more visual information about it let's pick up let's say I have a system here on Debian that's fine I pick up my agent record I change the view from the default view to Discovery and from there now you have an extra tab application pattern logs and I can now see what it looks like you log and this should be familiar to our item discovery experts view log over there and here we go we have a logs of a power n step by step if we scroll down and a little bit get config file potentially this is where the magic happens instead of executing SSH that's where we have a fork in the code and it's using the agent connection instead so the agent instead of a made to execute remotely this command nginx-v it will delegate the agent to on that command locally collect the output and then send it back to the mid server and we keep going on the mid with the rest of the pattern everything else is the same and here's your CI if we go back to the record here I do have a Mario DB and nginx so let me open all of these you can see that for mariadb now you have a version number that is assigned even a config file here we go here's my config file I don't know if there's a password in it so I'm not going to click on it so stepping back a little bit you see that there is no new parent okay we are not converting patterns the patterns remain the same so there is no migration to do the only thing that changes is using the agent connection instead of the maids connecting to the Target systems on Windows things are a little bit different since uh um the maid runs Powershell that calls then a CMD on the target system so we're trying to reproduce the behavior with the agent and on Linux the the shell may not be the same everywhere so there may be some differences here and there but we're trying to provide the compatibility mode to help you in that so I gave you an example on Linux here and let's see on a Windows system same thing you can see I have a postgres running here with all of his content um let me check I may I may I don't know do I have a another Windows it could be interesting let me just refresh it here I do have a SQL Server I just turn it back on so this one this one is failing but it's fine that's my own test but SQL Server we do support credentials applicative credentials as well the same way it is supported with regular patent execution so here more windows native SQL Server where we get all this information even the addition that should come up here all right so let's just create the CI there we go we got all of that information we were able to collect executing the pattern any question on the chat yeah so everything now's a good time to pause um here's a question will you still need applicative credentials to fully execute the pattern it depends wherever it is already required the answer is very likely yes however applicative credentials user and password um may not be the best fit in Security standouts in 2023 so a lot of our customers May create a set of credentials that will only be allowed locally on the system so you using the System Authentication as your process is authenticated locally may use just a unique socket for example and doesn't need handling a password for that using a read-only credentials is very important wherever you can but if you have something you have an application that you discover with applicative credentials you should be able to get the same outputs using ACC instead of that uh Powershell or Aussie search connection so nothing changes here there was no change in the code in any place or that for handling credentials great thank you there's a couple of questions around service mapping one is you know it seems you know people are are noticing that this could potentially work with top-down service mapping and then also they wanted to know if this will work with ML service mapping so if you could answer those two questions thank you very much I believe I need to go back to my slides to show you what we support as of today and then we discuss the next steps okay right anything else um I don't know if you know any answer to this question there's a question that is unanswered by us so far but do you know if Innovation lab apps can be used on personal developer instances I believe normally they can this is my assumption mine too I haven't I haven't used the PDI instance for more than five years so uh uh please let us know but if you are facing some issues you still have to request the application um but I I believe there should be no limitation over there if there is please uh contact us on the side and you can have a look yeah I would say give it a try send out to a few people solve it by the end of this call I'll have an answer [Music] um and then just wondering about the availability of this functionality right we're we're not saying it's available yet it's still in the Innovation lab so we cannot commit to a and you know an actual release date as of today I will get to that thank you very much all right so yes today where are we today August uh something 15th well we've been through quite a journey to make it happen we still have a lot of work where our engineering teams are actively working on to make it happen earlier this year in q1 we started with a design partnership program with some of my customers and partners as well to evaluate the core features that we have then released on the Innovation lab design partnership program this is a fantastic opportunity for customers who are very Hands-On who want to try things out and provide feedback to service now before those new features are released officially so if you think that you do have some availability and you may want to consider that this is something we can definitely consider Innovation lab now anyone can request the patent execution with SCC and by submitting the requests on the Innovation lab on the store but this is where we are now of course I'm targeting my goal is to have all of these products for renewable availability but the the concept of evolution lab is that I get feedback from customers so it points me to a place where I'm comfortable to release the application for General availability so if you want to see it sooner for Renewal availability please give it a try on the Innovation lab and we talk to me so we can we can discuss the next steps so now uh just to recap application uh patterns are executed we don't do serverless all this kind of stuff this is again from the process classification that this pattern execution is initiated we replaced SSH and win RM with ACC connection this is for the remote command execution however there is another command there are two actually commands we do not support yet which is a put file operation that is used for Oracle glass and the impersonates on the windows we do not support these two so if we look at how many application patterns out there I believe with just remote command operation we cover like 95 percent of ammo nothing changes besides the uh introducing the agent so you do not have a another probe to pattern migration okay we're not converting anything you don't have to change your mates the same patterns should work with the same mates with the agent connected to the mates you will find your execution logs just as I was showing it then how to run pattern execution with Linux you can reuse sudo so run the agent with a under like low privileged account system account so under like uid 1000 on on Reddit based for example and on Windows depending on how you intend to deploy the agent either you run it as a system account with obviously the allow list enforced for those who know about the architecture we have also do not each command that is sent by the instance to the agent has to be in the list of approved commands the agent can execute you don't want a full remote shell obviously on your systems so you have reinforcing allow list by default and make sure this is enforced always you can decide to run the agent with limited privileges with deeper programs we have the backup role and of course to organize a service so this is the alternative if you don't want to run it as the local system account for now the allow list so that list of commands since it is highly dynamic or quite Dynamic let's say with patent execution for now we leave it at the responsibility of a customer but we can talk about that once we are done with a webinar reach out to me please to know more about what what options we can provide and last thing you do have a patent debugger that is available with ACC you just have a simple checkbox use ACC connection and you are in okay so call to action get started and get into the community post and uh um you can submit your requests on the Innovation lab I will approve them you should have my email address somewhere and if not I will chat to you anyways as you have your I will have your contacts um at the time you request the application so get started and and very keen to hear from you on that so uh before we talk about features that are not covered yet Steve any other question and before we get into the third poll um one of the questions is does this mean at some point we can replace discovery via mid-service so you know horizontal Discovery with ACC this is this is already a very strong alternative to horizontal Discovery in many aspects in many situations we do have some customers that use a complementary approach where their own reagent to provide a refreshed information every day and they run the full horizontal Discovery to get the Deep dive on applications it all depends on what your use cases are and you have a question um just some generic ACC questions we'll answer those outside of this um and we'll get to the service mapping questions I promise so seven back to you all right well we do have as I mentioned before some uh some limitations with uh with this mechanism to execute Guardians but what I would like to hear from you now for those of you uh one 150 attendees who are joining this here today what is your main intent with patent execution so let's get to pawn number three and check all that apply I hope it's a multiple choice Steve now can you pick up multiple options yes it is thank you perfect otherwise you take the most important one oh wow we should just have an option all of you above all right so are you just looking at the application classes to be filled in like MySQL or Mario DB um TomCat Apache Etc are you looking for changes in your tracked configuration files are you looking at licensing requirements let's say for Oracle glass or the Oracle LMS do you have custom patterns that really you don't want to convert to to a script from the options we described in the webinar on how to expand the agent capabilities and then yes top down service mapping um how many of you do have this use case that obviously really needed any you just want maybe to migrate over from a horizontal Discovery to the agent based or let's say you have never used horizontal Discovery you are just on tag based service mapping with Cloud Discovery and Nova 2 introducing the agents you want to have a deeper dive understanding of those applications the pole seems to be closed at this point all right so we have quite a lot here so top down service mapping all right and application classes and then quite a lot of custom patterns that's interesting tracked configuration files and then Oracle nms and over again for offer please feel free to put that in the comments in the survey so that we can follow up on that with you so we discussed before that look we do not support yet top down service mapping we do see podcast and parents as long as they not use the put file of the impersonate on Windows they should be covered with that so please give it a try so I expect at least 38 attendees who check that box to request the app on the store and tell me about it application classes populated you should have that track configuration files as long as it is associated with the Parian that should be over there um watch out make sure that it is the power end that is activated by default not the probe so you have nginx we may still activate the probe by default the old probe and not the power down so make sure you do that tiny change here and as we do not support put file yet we cannot support Oracle glass we still do have quite some customers who who are looking at this feature implemented so uh as I said before in this webinar we cannot we cannot discuss roadmap items or provide any ETA um but what I can say is that if you are looking for features that are not implemented yet in particular for Oracle glass and for top-down service mapping please reach out to us as soon as you can we'll be delighted to have uh conversations beyond that thank you thank you sir Steve the floor is yours I will take it to leverage about agent client collector um as well as we have a nighttime visibility resource Library it's kind of like um the One-Stop shop if you want to learn all about um every every single uh solution that icon visibility has we have links to videos to blogs to other resources that will help you learn how to use those products and get to you know to Value faster um one other thing uh so you know some of you may have attended these but Sarah and I have been touring the world doing these item visibility workshops and we have two upcoming next month in September uh one in Waltham Massachusetts it says Boston there but it's in our Waltham office as well as Nashville Tennessee uh so the the one in Waltham is the 12th and 13th of September and the one in Nashville is the 26th and 27th these are one and a half day immersive workshops um where you can learn and get hands-on experience with icon visibility Solutions uh anything you see there that is highlighted uh so Boston and Nashville are the only two locations left that we have not been to yet on this list so I see a question in there about Toronto uh we we actually went to Toronto back in March um so if you're in the city if you have a city where you want us to come please let us know and we're also planning some additional cities for Q4 as well that are not on this list so please please please um you can um you know actually attend these and Ryan I'm not sure if you put that link in there but if you can please do that um please come back yeah we will we will um next year for sure um and then of course uh we the the products that servicenow builds are really largely based off of the input from our customers we would love it if you would go to the servicenow idea portal and this is on our now support site 10 customers um have have upvoted one idea Sovereign and his colleagues will get an email saying that hey guys there's 10 you know customers that want this feature right they'll look at it they'll prioritize it they'll look at it for feasibility and uh most likely those will get to the roadmap faster than somebody who just reaches out to us and says hey wouldn't it be great if we had this feature so please use the idea portal this helps us you know determine where the biggest interest and needs are across our customer base um so Alan the link for it is right there on the screen it is before we get to the call to action let me just see here is any more questions can you explain at a high level how the ACC will perform vertical discovery if not all CIS in the service have an agent installed yeah we we haven't really worked out all those details just yet uh so that is a forward-looking uh thing uh so once we have you know ironed all that out we will produce you know materials we'll write a blog and you'll see exactly how that's going to work so thank you for the question John if you want uh John that you reach out to me directly outside this webinar would be high pitching to have a conversation with on this with you thank you awesome so last here um you know we'd love for you to install this application in sub production you know as severed mentioned uh the more customers we have that can evaluate this the more data he will have to make a decision about when it's ready to actually be moved to production so step one go to the store download the app and install it in sub production um if you install it in your PDI you're going to have the functionality there but really you're not going to be able to discover much of your sub production environment with that right we are looking for a large swath of different Discovery Technologies different applications and so forth so you're likely better off installing this in sub production uh and if you have a Sandbox instance that'd be great too um and then of course once you have done that email server and just to get started say hey I downloaded it now what do I do right so if if you don't email Severin he's going to email you so you might as well be proactive um and we need as many customers as possible to do that please uh finally here um what you saw today is part of a larger solution called itom visibility right it's a it's a piece of the puzzle so across all these different products we help you gain visibility across your entire technology estate right we you know we like to say that we enable technology Excellence with icon visibility so our time visibility Solutions will help populate your cmdb to make it service aware we'll populate your certificates into there we had a webinar last year on certificate management we'll populate your firewall security policies we'll populate your tags and help you set up tag policies so that you can have better tag standards across your organization uh Severn already mentioned about Oracle license data collection for glass if you have horizontal Discovery you can discover everything that Oracle needs to support a licensed audit uh and Oracle will take our our stuff I mean our our results because we are a verified third party vendor so if you have that need please you can do this without even software Asset Management we encourage you to have Sam but uh of course you could actually do the audit without having software Asset Management uh over there on the right hand side of course we have multi-source cmdb which will help you um will help you visualize all the sources you have across your estate and make informed decisions on the Fly about which are the best attributes for there and um service mapping of course will help you gain a service awareness seem to be where you'll be able to understand how your infrastructure and your applications relate back to an application service that is deployed so that you can have you know better prioritize your uh you know response to outages to changes to incidents and security risks and everything else and then of course ACC we covered ACC today Cloud native operations for visibility that is we're going to have a new version of that coming out soon um that is going to help you gain that near real time you know visibility into your kubernetes environment and then of course the bread and butter is Discovery it's what our core discovery engine is what collects everything that we that we need to know about your environment uh and the service graph connectors are those third-party certified cmdb Integrations uh we have over 45 of them on the store including our most recent one which is around gaining access to otel for your Cloud native Technologies such as kubernetes so tons of value in the suite if you have not yet seen our our our webinar series please check it out you'll find you know you know webinars on all these different
