data classification in the data privacy Store app is used to secure and protect sensitive information in our example we'll use data classification to categorize email addresses into the personally identifiable information class by default five parent classes are available in the demo data confidential internal personally identifiable information public and restricted for this demo you'll need the admin or data classification admin role the left column shows existing parent classes and child classes the classified data area lists the data already classified specifically it shows where each table and column are categorized we're missing the class for personally identifiable information so let's create it click add class give it a name if this is a child class select the parent class in our case this is not a child class so we'll skip this field adding a description is optional let's go ahead and add one then click save now we have five parent data classes just like in the demo data the arrow next to the confidential data class indicates there are child classes in this case the child classes organize data by region let's add a child class to the personally identifiable information class and give it the name email all that's left to do is classify data containing email addresses under new all table data that has not yet been classified is listed we can select the data listed from an entire table to classify all at once or select individual columns we'll filter the table for the email columns we want select them and click classify data we can see that the email data has been classified in two places on the classification page under the subclass and on the overview page in the classified data widget the number four indicates we classified four columns categorizing the data into classes is one step in protecting it from unauthorized access disclosure or misuse in the last video of this three-part series we'll anonymize these email addresses for more information see our product documentation or knowledge base or ask a question in the servicenow community
