The Otterly Owlsome Podcast with Allison and Justin - Episode #009
hi I'm Alice hi I'm Justin and you're listening to the utterly awesome podcast who knows what we'll talk about I still Skype with her and uh my friend Tracy that lives in Oklahoma who actually works for service now we Skype because I help her with all the next-gen stuff and so we Skype during the day but mostly it's my friend Kelsey we uh we've never really lived in the same town other than during college so when you use the word the verb Skype you mean a video call right yeah yeah like what we're doing now well no we chat like it has like a chat capability so you're talking just instant messaging yeah yeah okay but she doesn't like she doesn't have texts on her computer so while she's working it's easier your video totally froze this is still frozen yeah oh no it's probably recording on your side it's okay man Skype I yeah isn't that what teams became Skype at some point I think so I just I find it hilarious that they had like how many years of this technology and they just really fumbled it during code yeah Zoom just took it over it's amazing yeah and like some stuff like that we were just like uh they've tried so hard to do a phone you know Windows did for so long and just couldn't get it done do you remember what were the Microsoft MP3 player zoons I've never had one but they looked nice yeah it's like a little candy bar did you have one I didn't I knew someone that had one though and like they were like this will be so much better than the iPod I remember getting my first iPod but it still had the little quick wheel yep on it and um I just thought it was that was probably when I started listening to podcasts it was that first iPod I got I got many I couldn't do this thing too so I had the mini yeah I still have it actually at my mom's house and are you a iPhone or Android now my phone iPhone I can't see anything if you're holding it up I can't see it no yeah you totally froze up I don't know why I'm in the man cave and we have an X Wi-Fi extender out here so oh you're on Wi-Fi oh okay yeah I don't do any I don't do any video calls on Wi-Fi so but it'll be okay it's gonna record it's my refuge right now is so is family on their way out or is that at the end of the weekend instead of well the the my brother's leaving because he does he does till noon so they'll be leaving once he's done working for the day and it'll be him his wife and their son my mom's staying another week so the um the unaware camera bomber yes no self-awareness awesome yeah that's why I escaped out here and in the man okay I hope it comes through on the video hopefully you do the editing let me see if I stop my camera and restart it at least it froze in a good spot where you weren't like there you go and I could see you you weren't like yeah like sometimes it freezes bad in fact yesterday you froze on um that internal call we had with the AE and you froze like with this perfect smile and I was like well if you gotta freeze one way that's that that's the way to freeze yeah now yesterday we had to reboot the router like our internet here is garbage fiber put in in like a month so we'll be switching they um I had cable before and I paid for like uh this ridiculous price for the package I can't remember what it was and then the ATT truck started appearing on the road you can see them run the wires so I started chasing them now I was like what is the fiber going to be ready when it's coming when it's Beauty because like I think a couple weeks a couple weeks went by I'm checking the website I mean and the second that website works I submitted or whatever paid it they were out here like in two days ran the fiber two days later they buried it under the um the yard and I haven't looked back since haven't had an outage haven't had any issues I've got symmetric bandwidth up and down like it's one gig it has just been a it's been a dream knock on wood we're in an HOA and there's an HOA Facebook group like the HOA Nazi just and Facebook page is hysterical I would not be a part of it if they didn't actually post like relevant HOA thing and so we have um it's called Breeze line and I forget who it's through it's like Atlantic Broadband and like I have had issues since we moved in David somehow doesn't and so it's just me but they're putting in something called like Carolina something that's fiber that I think they're owned by 18 T or something so the 18 T trucks have been out there like I've submitted our address yeah the same thing I did I was on it yeah it's so yeah they're and the thing that'll be interesting for you is that are they going to do fiber to the street or Fiber to your house I don't know that's a big difference in charge of all of that because I made sure it was fiber to the house I'm like I want that sucker right to the house so there was nothing in between us and the fastness yeah ours like I said I I don't know if it's my office like I plug when I'm in my office directly into the little all the Pod but the little extender pod thing like I plug directly into it and I usually don't have problems when I do that but if I'm on Wi-Fi like I have all sorts of weird problems and I've tried to like redo all of it and it's still good yeah there's still Wi-Fi at that point but at least you're eliminating one more hop on the Wi-Fi yeah yeah I think Wi-Fi is great for like streaming you know doing work like working on a document or something like that but if you want to do the like video with it not being bad video your video is fine now um or in my case I was uploading videos to YouTube and I just have to like hit the upload button and walk away because all the charter stuff it was just so slow now it uploads in seconds I can move on with my life also like this room is a detached one car garage like I don't want to say it's far from the house but I mean it's pretty far from the house but it has it's got a golf simulator that uses a little iPad for Wi-Fi that's our beer fridge and then we've got a TV that's like a smart TV oh you're literally sitting where the car would come in yeah so like we took all the rails off and put in like the projector for the golf simulator David put down peel and stick carpet and there's like a green that you can hit yeah and there's his clubs and there's like the little iPad because it has this little contraption that has like a laser on it that like follows the ball and you can play different courses and stuff but like we never have a Wi-Fi issues out here and it's all we have is the little extender pot and then the Garage that's attached to the house is where our gem is and the only thing we use the Wi-Fi for out there is when I'm doing my spin classes for my iPad and then we put in um a TV um like a smart TV so when I'm like on the treadmill I can put on Netflix or something now when that AC unit kicks on next to you is that really loud I turned it off for this call but yeah that's also part of we have a all of our we're so lazy all of our plugs are smart plugs so like I it's on a timer in the summer to come on every day and like I said we have no Wi-fi like in right now I'm not really having Wi-Fi issues but in my office for some reason it could be just something in in them around your office and I've seen interference or badly you know placed routers the other one that I've seen before I use Eero um is what I my because so it's got like a mesh Network we use Google as well okay so you're doing the mesh technology sometimes like there's a spot in the bathroom where it will flip it'll just start you know this route or this router it just can't make up its mind and you feel like you have no connection which is probably good do your business and get out um but I've seen that before where like they just I don't know if it's a bug or whatever but I haven't had that issue in a long time well when I was trying to figure it out like our internet has an app so you can see like which device is connected to like which pod and my computer was like connecting to the pod in the garage and so I was like well that's stupid that's awesome I'm having issues and so I was trying to figure out how do I get it to connect to the one in my office like inside it was a mess I spent far too long getting it to connect to the right one so yeah well fiber isn't gonna fix that oh I know but yeah interesting interesting luckily you know that's another thing about working with uh uh service now just to bring it back to kind of a topic oh did I tell you about the artificial intelligence you froze again is there audio there oh my God we've lost Allison for the first time I see I spoke too soon there you are you're back um what was I gonna ask you oh did I tell you about the artificial intelligence podcasting thing I experimented with yeah I think you were off you're on PTO so this week's episode um the the company that we use to distribute our podcasts right um it's called podbean for anybody who cares um they have Partners they work with and one of them was this different app that creates the YouTube description the title The LinkedIn description the you know quotes from the podcast or whatever and I was like well that's interesting that could save me 30 minutes if I didn't have to you know do all that so I uploaded an episode to it you get one for free nice and it ran through it and then you had to pick well what's this podcast about then just were like we talk about a lot of things like we don't really have a set like this is the agenda for Justin and Allison to talk about um and then combined with that on our sales call on Monday um our sales leader asks well what's the audience for your podcast I'm like oh um anyone that wants to listen I don't we haven't really thought through like I mean I haven't I don't know about you but yeah imagine if someone who understands what servicenow is and enjoys apartment musings and ramblings yes about random stuff luckily Rachel wrote me and said she's a fan so a lot of people like so Abby wrote me and she was like I love it it's not all technology because I can understand it I was like yeah you're better it froze again this is gonna be interesting I had to edit uh when I edit this oh no I'm back here you are we need to get you a ethernet cable or run through the garage I've got 100 foot long when it's flat if you want me to send it down there well us having to do it I could probably just run it through the window that's true only when I'm out here yeah just carry it out there I might tell David this is his new office let's see how he does it's probably it's probably not an issue unless you're on video about what we're doing and then I'll take his office that has no problems and he can he'd never get anything done he'd just be swinging golf clubs I mean I would get tired of that eventually it's like a batting cage I've always wondered like how long can one spend in a batting cage the beer fridge would be empty it's full right now it's true I don't need the beer in the room with me like well we're starting 75 hard on Sunday so no beer oh my gosh what up that beer needs to be taken care of behind you oh come on now it'll go bad only what four hours from you is it four hours to so you're an Aiken right yeah I think we're only four hours away because we were gonna come up there last December remember and then that's right we decided to do it too late and everything was booked you had every like you had plans all over the country and you're like I'm gonna come to Nashville I'm like geez right now well I have I told you how we pick our trips every year they have I don't remember what she did um we actually saw it I think on Tick Tock but essentially you pick one location that you can drive to one location that you would have to fly to and then one international and you put them all in like a hat so each person does like one of each and then you draw them out whatever's left that's where you're going for the year it's um where is it Victoria British Columbia I should know where that is Canada Canada that's right over Seattle okay yes I know exactly where that is yes yeah so but both drivable ones we both put in Nashville so cool yeah um I don't know that I would go like what if I go down to South Carolina I go to Greenville maybe Charleston dad Charleston would be a destination I haven't been to Charleston personally but yeah that would be a destination into the aquarium there Connor was just in Charleston and we always talk about Connor every episode well that's a Connor then your your sister in Australia too I guess show me this summer we should have her on does she have the accent no probably not well so what's funny is she's been there for 20 years probably almost and sometimes there's certain things she says but I'm like I think I remember you saying that the last time she's developed a little bit it's a fun accent it is it is I miss Steve Irwin her and why you want to call him they're not married but they've been together forever I just like he when we first met him I think he got sick of saying like a dingo ate my baby and all the things but I know so our our trip this year is up to British Columbia we're probably gonna be that should be nice yeah is it a long flight I have not looked because we were trying to figure out timing with like school and stuff all the joys of being a parent does this does the kid come with you to Victoria yeah no no kid on a vacation okay yeah Myrtle Beach for him Myrtle Beach which we were just there this past weekend and we took my brother and his wife and their son and because their son by the gas station we went to Becky's because I go to Becky's State Fair my best friend in Oklahoma she's her daughter is obsessed so I got her a shirt and a bow listen to her so nice every time I stop I get her one and mail it to her so he's she'll be four in May and so anytime there's mail she gets excited excited well I guess I'm thinking like thinking as an adult if someone sent me a shirt every time he'd be like okay I've got a lot of shirts now but I guess when you're a kid you're growing after you're growing Adam you get mail and mail is fun yeah getting mail yes I thought that was unique to me but I don't go so shirts because I really only stop at Dexter's with me and so if we're just going like but it's the perfect halfway stop for kids it's an hour and a half which it's about three hours to Myrtle Beach and so it's like literally like right in the middle of the trip so it's like the perfect bathroom break run around very cool anything new and um work work Realm recently let's see I'm pitching a road map right after this to a customer like like at the top of the hour yeah so we should end a few minutes early to give you a minute they've been kind of informed they were like we want more information before we decide to do it so I'm joining to go through kind of what it is the process like how we develop them and then give some like example outputs I think they'll be good if they do then I'll probably actually go to prison in person for road map so is that anywhere nice without giving Toronto Toronto I've never been to Toronto so now I went for the regional event in December for November but I mean it was nice I never been it was it it was great yeah same here and then one of the guys that works for us lives in Alberta and it was apparently like negative something ridiculous so he's like this is warm I'm like yeah I live I mean like it was cold because I'm used to like you know it's currently 70 degrees with a high of 76 today I think the same weather here actually wow yeah well it rained yesterday so it cooled off a little bit yeah it's raining it was raining this morning there was some customer I remember talking to like you went like on the map you went past the U.S Canadian border and then you kept going and going and going up and I've been up and up and I was like there's people that live up there like okay like all the way up to the where the water comes in and I was just like I have no idea and it was cold yeah yeah I think that's that's I've got that going on and then I may or may not be going to knowledge so yeah I guess that's a big question advice I don't think I'm going yeah um I figured by now that they should have told us it's like yeah I'm so if the client leaves so I'm the executive sponsor for one of our customers and so I might be going so I can network with them if the client lead can't go so yeah and to be quite honest like I've been too many knowledges and as much as like it's not a dig at Vegas it's just I've done Vegas so I'm kind of like but what I will say is even though I've been to Vegas now having done knowledge in like Orlando and New Orleans and some other places with how big it is now it is so much easier in Vegas because I don't know if you went to the one in Orlando yeah that's the one I've been to it's just like the busing and the it was just so difficult whereas when you're in Vegas like you're in the hotel you can just click like if you need to run up to your room for just like for me who's an introvert a quick yeah sure is especially if you have to work in any of the booths yeah just take a quick so I never thought about that I remember going to Orlando and noticing I actually couldn't even get a bus because I booked so late I had to stay in like a courtyard somewhere off of International Drive and then I but I saw everybody coming in on the buses and then there it was like that mile long Convention Center it was just a lot a lot of water well so in Vegas I mean you get your steps in I mean it's it's pretty like they have it because I think this year it's at the Venetian again if I remember right oh cool yeah that's a big space yeah yeah but being in the hotel it's connected to just I mean even though it's like it's literally a mile walk like from your room to Convention but just being in the same building and not having to catch a bus and being kind of stuck until a Bus shows up right just having the flexibility so after I've been to all these different places I'm good with it it's because at first I was like I want to go somewhere other than Vegas and I was like I take it back so yeah gosh I haven't been there it was the last I think um what did I go there for it wasn't HDI it was an HDI conference I went there at 1.4 it might have been SharePoint your SharePoint or HDI I can't remember which the first time I went was for a Mac a piece conference remember being like I I because like some of the sessions I was in I was like oh yeah you want to talk about imposter syndrome I went to a Cisco conference oh my God it was totally out of my elements yeah and then what was funny is like the this is gonna have the coolest thing I saw which is not cool um they hacked an insulin pump like on stage and I was like oh my gosh like you could kill somebody like they were like this is why security is so important I was just like oh no look at this is we'll think about it like a pacemaker or now insulin pumps are put inside your body so you you don't have to have it external like that's gonna happen more and more and more I mean I think the first day at the conference like after that little session I was just like I I need to just get away from this for a few minutes and I was sitting at like one of the bars and had my little badge on and this guy sat down next to me he's like oh are you at the conference and I was like he worked for Mcafee it was like a sales guy and so he was just like oh are you here like are you with like a vendor are you here with the company I was like oh our company uses McAfee and so we became friends and he took me to like the best dinners with like him and his little group because like it was me I was like the only one from our company there and so I I was like okay and so it was three Brians that all worked for Mcafee and then this other guy and it was so funny because we went literally to some of the nicest dinners and my expense report was like nothing because this dude like took me to come downstairs with his customers and so they were like Allison you know you can expense things I was like oh no I made a friend we're good I I think that's in the difference of outworking here versus where I came from is when I started working here my expense reports are really low because I work with a sales team and the sales guys and women will just pay for stuff and that so I could get back to them like I don't have any expenses to submit everybody paid for everything for me I'm super nice that's why I was excited I was like you're in sales great yeah do you remember the best thing you ate um we went to a really good Steakhouse I don't remember what it was called and like I don't eat fish really because I grew up in Oklahoma yeah I remember yeah and they got this like shrimp appetizer and I felt bad like not trying it and it was actually really good I was like it's because it's so that's how we get to use Seafood just make sure you watch it get killed and got it in front of you I see I get killed but I think I told you there's a place in Virginia I can't remember the name of it but they're crabbed episode I've learned I like crap crab because I'll eat like crab wontons and like crab dip maybe it's the cream cheese it's probably the cream cheese but I like the fake crab just made out of cod I think yeah I've learned I like crab dip crab is a sweet meat too so it's not and it doesn't have that seafoody yeah taste or smell yeah yeah and shrimp if it's got like and it's fresh I can do shrimp gotcha now I'm hungry it's close to lunch time it's almost 11. yeah like I said we're doing 75 hard so we're trying to figure out before Sunday what diet we're gonna do now that includes exercise too right it does yeah I've been slacking lately I've got a week with no exercise I think well that's kind of the bad thing like if I end up going to knowledge like you can't have alcohol you have to drink a gallon of water a day a day an hour and a half to exercise half of which has to be outside so I'm like this will be a fun knowledge I need the no alcohol part for me would be really hard especially if you're meeting people you haven't seen in a long time and trying to um you know have those relationships yeah that's kind of weird when you're trying to nurture relationships when you're networking you're networking yes thank you social drink because yeah yeah but that'll be like the only hard hard if I go but I'm gonna do well what happens in Vegas days in Vegas I hate to be cliche but I would stick to it if I go inside you're not going because I could convince you to like go outside with me to walk or something I totally would I think the last time I got when I ran there the last time I decided for some stupid reason I did the strip and the whole thing yeah like down and back down to um from Mandalay Bay down to um Treasure Island I think and then back and the problem is it's like up the stairs down the stairs up the stairs down the stairs and I was just like this is a bad idea it was an interesting workout but yeah and it's like five five in the morning so all the homeless people are sleeping on the little crossover bridges yeah [Music] yeah it wasn't it wasn't wise I think you can go behind this strip if you have all those issues so yeah no I'll just be I don't run it's not my thing walk fast I will be walking fast I would say if some Runners would say I don't run either I'm probably more of a jogger a runner one day I'll run again maybe so I'll encourage you to and then you can come up to these mountains and run up mountains with me I don't know that I want to run up the mountain it's rewarding at the top that sounds like a trick I mean because you get to the top and you're exhausted but then you look out and you're like you're so blown away by how beautiful it is and then you get to run down you could I mean you don't really run up the mountain it's you're sometimes you're crawling I'm gonna I can't breathe save you any cool scoping calls please yeah in fact um I have a potential customer where I was scoping out um they basically how do I do this without identifying them they construct things and they that requires many different teams to coordinate and they're looking for like project management um but it's not a classic use of project management so I scoped it and said I'm not going to try the solution what your solution is going to be to replace what they're doing and then when we presented it they're like well if we could see a proof of concept and you know that's like bad to tell Justin because then and this is probably why I haven't worked out my brain starts working on it and working on it and like yesterday and today I've been building it and uh in fact I built my first in the tell me my first function field on a table do you know what that is I've never built one before calculation it said not a calculated field it's a function field and what's different is calculated works on what's in the database for a function and calculates as it's presented in real time so it's a kind of like your questions tell me about a business rule and a client script we talked about one time but um so yeah every time I do go down this road or something I ended up learning something I haven't done so that would be one it was interesting so you know me I'm building it all in happens in studio and flow designer trying to make sure I'm not doing any scripting or anything and so that I'm hitting some limitations on those things as you do but that was interesting what's that I just liked your vague description of they build things who did I say that about they construct they they construct things yes um well actually they're very much related to what you and I were talking about with fiber that helps I'll just leave it at that but that's really like you can imagine all the complications and things to track dates timelines approvals and you can I'm going to get on my soapbox here real quick I know we got very little time left but like classic use of project is you got a project plan and you got tasks and that's great for implementing service now or um building um a shed maybe I don't know yeah but when you're coordinating construction and engineering and network and um real estate teams and and you got permitting from different different agencies you know they all have their window of what they needed to get done and let's see they don't really care about that big yeah yeah but the project manager probably cares about the big project plan and then your the company probably cares about well what's going on everywhere and so you've got that view or that lens into milestones and the budget budget yeah they took budget complications away from me thank goodness oh that's a great thing so yeah that's been that's been occupying my brain Cycles this week so my brain's like a dog with a bone like once it starts working on something I can't really sleep usually I'll just wake up and be thinking about it until like yeah none projects and like I've been struggling to figure something out and I wake up and I'm like oh my gosh I figured it out and I like I used to keep a note back by my bed I don't anymore but you can just probably text it to yourself or no I used to have to write it down because like half asleep I'd be like one eye like I like it it's fulfilling but it's uh it does it does preoccupy me away from things I should be doing like getting up early working out yeah all right I left you one minute to prep I'm sorry it's okay I'll be good I'm just talking about what a road map is and how we do it so any closing thoughts nope got it in this week even though even the schedules right we didn't miss we didn't miss all right we'll see you next time all right take care thank you [Music] foreign [Music]
