SAM Simulator Step-By-Step Guide

I recently finished the SAM simulator and teammates who were unable to finish frequently reached out to me for help. So, I wrote a step-by-step guide to assist the SAM simulator in the hopes of helping others who might be having trouble navigating the platform.

Instructions:

Grant the sam_admin role to the admin user account which is being used to complete the simulator tasks .

  1. Application Filter>System Security> Users
  2. Click Users
  3. In the User ID field search>admin
  4. Open the admin record navigate to the related links section>Roles>Edit
  5. From the slush bucket search sam_admin
  6. Move sam_admin into the System Admin bucket and save

Software Installations>Import Sets

  1. Download xlsx
  2. Application Filter>Import Sets>System Import Sets> Load Data
  3. Create Table> Label = Software Installations Import
  4. Choose File> xlsx> Load
  5. Once state is complete and completion code meets success create transform map directly below the green success status
  6. Name the table> Software Installation Map>Target Table>Software Installation [cmdb_sam_sw_install]>Auto Map (in the related links section)
  7. Scroll down to the Field Maps tab set coalesce to true (double-click “False”) for u_installed_on and u_display_name
  8. Click Transform in the Related Links Section

Navigate back to the Application Filter>Discovery Model>Search Product>InDesign check the Normalization Status

Normalization

Once complete Normalization Status should read Manually Normalized

  1. Application Filter>Pattern>Software Assets>Pattern Normalization Rule>New

Populate with the following:

Name: Adobe InDesign CC 2017

Discovered publisher contains: Adobe

Discovered product contains: InDesign CC 2017

Publisher: Adobe Systems

Product: InDesign

Product type: Licensable

Version: CC 2017

  1. Right-click gray banner>save>Apply Rule

Navigate back to the Application Filter>Discovery Model>Search Product>InDesign check the Normalization Status(check for changes)

Software Asset Management Content Service

Refer to simulator

Software Asset Management Content Service

  1. Application Filter>Software Asset>Custom Products>New

Populate>Name= Executive Software >Product= SafetYmail>Product Type=Unlicensed>Product Classification=Encryption>Submit

Reconciliation

  1. Application>Reconciliation>Software Asset>Run Reconciliation
  2. Application>Software>Assets>Software Entitlement>New

Populate: Asset tag: SW900001

Software model: Adobe Systems InDesign CC

License metric: Per Device

Purchased rights: 45Unit Cost: $240Total Cost: $10,800

  1. Application>Reconciliation>Software Asset>Run Reconciliation>Publishers>Adobe Systems>Continue>Run
  2. Software Asset>License Workbench>Adobe System>Expand “InDesign”, Select “CC”

Remediation Oprions(1)>Purchase Rights>Create Purchase Order

Ship to>San Diego Border - Pickup/Dropoff>Order

Entitlement Metrics

  1. Application>Software>Software Asset>Software Entitlements

For text> SW900001> License Metric>PerUser>Right-click gray banner “Save”>Publish

Application Filter>Run>Run Reconciliation>Publishers>Adobe Systems>Continue>Run

  1. Application Filter>Software>Software Assets>Software Models>Adobe Systems InDesign CC 2017>Related Records>Metric Attributes>Open Record with License Metric “Per named user”>Attribute Value = 2>Update

Application Filter>Run>Run Reconciliation>Publishers>Adobe Systems>Continue>Run

Entitlement Allocation

  1. Application Filter>Software>Software Assets>Licensing>Software Entitlements>Search”for text” SW900001>open record>User Allocations>Double click “Insert a new row” to add users Beth Anglin, David Loo, Fred Luddy, and Bow Ruggeri
  2. Application Filter>Run>Run Reconciliation>Publishers>Adobe Systems>Continue>Run

View Results from License Workbench

Software Usage

  1. Download xlsx
  2. Application Filter>Import Sets>System Import Sets>Load Data>Label table = Software Usage Import> Choose File from step 1>Submit

Create Transform Map>Name = Software Usage Map , Target Table = Software Usage [samp_sw_usage] >Right-click gray banner “Save”

AutoMap Tranform Fields

Navigate to Related Records set coalesce to true for u_publisher, u_year, u_product, u_month, u_user and u_configuration_item.>

In the Related Links section> Transform

  1. Application Filter>Software Usage>Software Asset>Discovery>Software Usage
  2. Note changes

Reclamation

  1. Application Filter>Reclamation
