good morning everyone and welcome back to our mobile app academy for 2022. this is our live building series where we show you how to build and configure mobile apps on the now platform my name is david haw and i'm an outbound product manager here at servicenow and i'll be your host for today's session um and i just want to start off by saying um oh if you're joining us for the first time welcome to the session our product experts are here to provide guidance best practices and answer all of your questions we host our mobile app academies every two weeks at 10 a.m pacific time and our go ahead and get started with today's topic mobile classic migration part 4 designing your mobile apps this is the final part of our mobile classic migration series and for today's session we want to show you some of the common configurations that you can make to personalize your mobile app experiences and then be able to tailor them so that they better align with their company's in-app branding okay and just to quickly review for today's schedule this will be about a 40-minute session we'll start off with a quick 10-minute overview our goals for today what we will implement and how to get started and then we'll jump into the exercise which will cover the basics on how to configure things like mobile icons small banners mobile theming using mobile app builder and the platform ui uh and then we'll open up to some q a afterwards okay but with all that said let's jump into the or review for designing your mobile apps and when it comes to in-app branding there's typically five common configurations that customers will typically go through first is aligning with um your platform's taxonomy so typically customers will start with an out-of-the-box mobile apps such as you know field service mobile agent right and that uses the default servicenow naming conventions um so your admin is actually going to have to go in and update the titles and the naming conventions of your screens landing pages or any other related content so that they match with what your users are familiar with on your platform okay second are your ui sections uh or how you would like your users to interact with the data on your landing pages do you want your data in card format so that there's one last tap to get your agent's access to their record information or do you want to make it a bit more clean and use icon sections right third is mobile icons how would you like to customize your icons on your navigation bars uh quick actions and icon sections just so you know today we support over 30 icons that you can pick from our servicenow icon library so it's just a matter of figuring out what's available and picking the ones that you want and then fourth is mobile banners if in-app branding is important for you for your service now asian experience typically you might want to add like a media section or maybe even a campaign banner to your home tab and i'll show you how quickly uh it is for you to add a banner image to the top using media sections okay uh and then lastly is mobile theming which gives us the ability to change the color scheme so that it better aligns with your in-app branding and requirements okay uh mobile theming is what we use to control the colors for headers links buttons and in-app icons any color that lives inside of your app okay and something i do want to highlight for mobile app builder which we we actually recently introduced a new update through the servicenow store last month and this will extend its capabilities of things that you can do with your mobile with the latest version 20.2 update we are now at 95 feature parity with platform and what that means is we're bridging the gap on what you can do on platform versus what you can do with mobile app builder when it comes to mobile configurations um so that means that everything you can do with mobile on the platform ui 95 percent of you get use cases you can now configure using mobile builder and i would say at this point for most customers you will now be able to accomplish almost everything that you would need from a configuration standpoint inside of our tool now um and this is much more than mobile studio was ever able to achieve in the past um some of the configurations that we now support in this february release include things like um being able to configure charts and dashboards global search and ai search content sections map screens chart screens as well as media sections and that's something that we'll be configuring today okay so now that we support majority of the use cases inside of our mobile app builder we'll now be able to spend majority of our time in a single interface so that it's a lot less confusing of knowing where to go when you're configuring mobile right so we'll be able to accomplish almost everything that we need inside of our mobile builder tool okay um and just a reminder that today's session is just a quick start guide um if you do want to learn more about the best practices around designing your mobile apps i highly recommend that you check out our best practices guide that you can find on our mobile community site you know we often find that if customers figure out what is possible when it comes to mobile design then it's just a matter of working backwards to get the experience that they want right um and so in this best practices guidebook you'll find screenshots of all the different screens and capabilities that is possible with their mobile platform as well as guidance on the best ways to display them within your own apps and it's just a great resource for you to have as you plan out your mobile experience and you can find this on the community if you just click on our essential resources article and that will give you quick links to our guidebook okay so definitely check that out um but with that said let's go ahead and start with our exercises um we are going to leverage the out of the box field service mobile app on our servicenow agent client and using the field service mobile workflow we're going to go through a few simple use cases here okay first is i'm going to show you how you can rename a few things like our ui sections our launcher screens and the navigation tabs second is i'll show you how to remove um unused screens that you might not want when you deploy your apps right on how to change your item sections into icon sections uh so that they have different layouts or orientations and so forth and then third i'll show you how you can customize your mobile icons uh for your home tab which can also be applied to your quick action quick actions as well as icon sections okay and then fourth is we'll add a media section to use as our home page banner and then lastly i'll show you how to navigate to the mobile theming table which lives on the platform ui um and that will be able to use to change the color scheme of our mobile apps okay so let's go and configure them on our instance now and i'm going to start by sharing a new screen sharing okay um actually you need to share a new screen with my mobile device let me do that one more time see this works there we go okay so now i just need to share again so now you should be able to see both my mobile device and my instance let me zoom in here so you can see it a little better i'm gonna log in really fast and then we're gonna start on our first use case which is i'm going to show you how to rename a few things like you see work the ui section here this is a screen which is um displayed as an item section so this is actually the name of the screen itself and i'll show you how to rename that as well as how to rename the launcher screen and your nav tab okay and we're gonna start by opening up mob builder whoops we'll close out uh some of this introduction stuff we'll launch into the first field service mobile app will open up the scope actually um i can take a step back um so instead of going just straight into this oh no no no it's good um so we'll start from top to bottom um i'll start from our navigation tab um let's say that we want to rename this my work tab into uh we'll change it from my work to home how would i go about doing that um i would start at the very top by clicking into mobile app configs and then opening up our mobile agent client okay and then i'm going to be looking for a launcher tab called my work um i think because i also have itsm [Music] that mobile app installed as well they also made 100 tabs might work so i'll show you how to distinguish between those two so you know you know that you're configuring the right one um and typically how i like to clean this up on the left hand nav because this can go this can get quite messy is um i typically minimize all the different launcher tabs right so these other launcher tabs comes from from other plugins and mobile apps that i have installed in my instance workbench is unreal unrelevant i don't care about notifications keep minimizing all the things that i don't need right all i'm looking for is my work so i'll keep going down until i see my work yep so here i found one called my work i need to double check is this the itsm one i see that the application scopes itsm so this is not the one i want so i'm gonna minimize this one too now i'll just keep going until i find the right one and there it is tab for my work um if i want to rename this launcher tab itself i have the ability to do so on this uh properties label so let's say that i want to call this um let's say that i actually want to make this say um [Music] uh hello logged in user you know that that's a capability that you can't do um how would i go about doing that i would click into the launcher itself and then there's this little settings field that says header title and if you choose one of the out of the box header titles you can see that there's a few depending on which mobile apps you've installed um i'm just going to pick one that most customers would have which is you know either itself mobile agent or now mobile i'm going to re use this now mobile one we'll apply it we'll save and then we'll refresh so now you can see that it says hello david hawk instead of whatever the name of your launcher tab is okay if i just want the first name i can choose the other one i think hr or mobile agent has one called hello first name we'll apply that and save and i think that looks just a little bit cleaner oh give it a second to load it might just be my wifi i'm going to close out and we log in [Music] there it is okay so now you can see it says hello first for the login user but back to what we're trying to do how do we rename this navigation tab for my work um if we go into the launch tab for my work i think it's this one actually um so let's rename this to home and click save and i think that should change it there it is um but we also want to change the icon of this uh so let's change the icon from the wrench into we'll pick an out-of-the-box one for home and then we'll pick this one from global and then we'll save okay so there um you know now typically all my logged-in agents um that will open up their app the first tab is typically used as their home tab but i guess if you have lots of different groups of users and different roles that's being applied to your asian apps um i guess it would depend but for this use case we'll just assume that whatever logs into our app this will be their primary landing page and so we're calling it our homepage okay now how would i go about renaming this ui section at the very top called work as well as this screen that's an item section called my work let's say that um for the second one i think this is a screen that shows me all of my critical recorder tasks i only see p1s and pt's so i'm going to rename this to my critical task okay um and to find that we're going to scroll uh i think the fastest way for how i do is i actually go back into our home page on mobile app builder and then i open up screens and i know that the screen's called my work so i'll just look at my work and i see that there is a launcher screen for my work and a list screen um i know that this is a list screen so we'll open this up okay give it a second to load and then i'll show you how you can change this from currently it's an item section which shows you all your cards uh in a horizontal or vertical orientation but if you want it to make a little bit cleaner and have it show up as an icon that's totally possible too i'll show you how to do that in a second hey david which which screen are you trying to load right now i'm just opening up this my work list screen okay yeah yeah we've we've seen that there are some of the out-of-the-box screens that have really large content trees and they take a long time to load so we we're continuously looking at improving that in that builder but we actually have a hotfix coming out uh end of this month to improve that in some of the out of the box screens that's really good to know that's awesome um okay uh we'll definitely highlight that uh one that gets released next month um so we want to rename this list screen for my work all i have to do is go into the list screen here um here's the name so we'll change this from my work to um call this critical task my critical task i think that should change it um we'll save okay and then we'll refresh so if this doesn't reflect the name what this indicates to me is this is actually the name of the ui section itself um and on that ui section there is a little toggle that says hide screen name and it's actually just using the ui section so let me show you what i'm talking about i'm gonna go back to my home screen um and i'm actually gonna uh i need to find this launcher screen i'm gonna go one up i think this launcher screen is now called home uh or is it still called work my work let's try my work um [Music] yep these screens look right so um here we go so there is a launcher screen called my work um and there is a title called my work so let's see what happens when we change this to my critical oh no this is this is not the ui section sorry um i don't care about this one uh i'm looking for a ui section so if i scroll down here it is so here's my two launcher sections for work and then my work i want to go into the my workflow and then we'll change this to my critical task and save and there it is okay um so you can see here that um i have a few options on my settings i can hide the header if i want and actually inherit the screen name um since i also changed the screen name to micro critical task i don't think it should show up the same name if i refresh oh no it just hides it completely okay um so yeah you have the option to hide header or or view or view divider if i set it to true you'll see that the header again um you can also hide the cl button i typically you only see the use case here is you can build you know a custom table that shows only one record or one card and i think a common uses i've seen is if you wanted to show uh let's say like my health verification id um and they actually use that one record as your safe workplace card so that you can enter the office um since you're not expecting more than one record on that card um you don't want there's like no purpose for the cl button okay so that's how that toggle is used um i can also change the orientation from vertical to horizontal and control the max display count here so let's say that i only want to show three records and have it scroll horizontally i'll save that in refresh and there it is okay um but let's say i don't want to use the item section at all this is what's provided to me out of box i actually want to change it into an icon section um now there's no option to do that here what you're actually gonna have to do is create a completely new ui section and then just point it to this current screen okay um and then we'll delete this off of our landing page so i'm gonna go back into my launcher screen for my work and i'm gonna first start by creating a new launcher screen um with the version 20.2 mobile app builder update you can see that there's new sections available to you now there's chart sections so you can build your charts and dashboards um content sections this is so that you can create mobile banners um and if you check out now mobile's um scope like the out of the box experience you'll see how they can they create their campaign banner experiences okay so that's something that you can use as a reference so that you can inherit that into your own maps in an icon section was previous records section is what i was calling it item section media section so that you can display images or videos at the top um and then single score is just more charting capabilities so i want to create a new icon section and we're going to name this micro um and then for the icon section destination i'm going to select one single screen which is this one and we'll select my critical task oh um so the reason why my critical task isn't showing up is because this is actually the title of the screen when you're looking up the destination screen itself it's actually the name column that's being used this is the oops this is the title but when you look up the screen itself it's asking for the name column um and i think the name column is called probably my work or something along those lines uh i can just double check so my critical task i'll have to open this up again so here's the title where's the name at um destination screen huh my critical test uh let's go back and see what happened so open up the launch screen um open up my critical task choose icon section destination you're you're configuring an icon section um which is this is this is where our taxonomy changes get a little confusing right the the icon section you have to create a um a destination screen for it i i think maybe you're really gonna like the legacy icon sections where you just pick the screen right right okay there it is so yes we have to create the screen first um so we'll click continue yeah and then we'll pick this you're creating the destination and this is where you consume the screen got it okay so we'll call this uh destination my critical task destination and then we'll pick the screen which is called my critical task good catch dude thank you all right pretty cool task i mean then here you can actually change or pick from um [Music] our servicenow's library of icons i think we have over 30. as of today you can only use and pick from servicenow's library of icons but in san diego we are there is a few enhancements which will give you a bit more flexibility you're actually able to use your own images and custom images um as well as even videos or even labels and text so that's an enhancement that's coming in san diego which will give you a bit more flexibility on how you can modify uh the icons of your icon sections okay but for for now today we're on a roam instance um we can only pick from our what's currently in the library okay so for this one we'll just pick you know uh probably like a wrench icon and then we'll save and if i refresh this i should expect to see a third spring here okay um and i see a single screen you can see that i named this um the naming is a bit cut off and it doesn't look that great uh so i can downsize this to just critical task save that and it should fit i think the number of characters uh is like 12 uh i forget but it should be mentioned in the park dogs okay um and then let's see oh so having just one single icon on a horizontal scroll orientation does not look that great um i would actually suggest if you have less than three icons on a horizontal i would actually recommend going vertical because it looks a lot much it looks a lot better so i'm going to go back into my icon section and change the orientation from horizontal to vertical okay you also have the ability to display the feed count if you want so we'll save and then we'll refresh and that just looks a whole lot better okay you can see that there's four records inside of the screen um and um let's say that i actually want to put this icon section at the bottom um and maybe i don't care for this title at the top either um i think i can shh um [Music] i guess you don't have the ability to do that here to hide the title name of the ui section um [Music] can anyone confirm on mobile team ian or david sorry david i missed that question what what are you uh i do well i know that you can hide the um [Music] the ui section label for item sections uh but can you also do that for icon i'm not seeing the setting here um no i guess yeah that's something i'll have to look into i i don't i don't think that's supported but like you know i i couldn't say that 100 so i'll follow up with that gotcha for now let's just put our critical task at the very bottom um so we'll go back into our launcher screen and then we're going to apply an order of we'll change this order to a thousand uh i guess we have to click into uh oh go back um and we'll set this to 500. and that should move it to the bottom and then we can delete this pre-existing item section or record section since we don't need it anymore okay so that's how you go about changing your item sections into icon sections how you can rename um your launcher screens as well as the launcher tabs as well as the ui sections themselves um let's see is there anything that i missed no i think we're good okay so a couple other things that i can do to clean this up um there might be unused screens on your out of the box app right um so you have the ability to remove anything that you don't want or maybe even apply roles so that only specific users have access to them i have a couple of screens here for browse services in my instance let's say that the agents you know this isn't relevant to them um and i just want to get rid of these how would i go about doing that um i would first start by finding this ui section right and i have this um up here on mobile pillar so i have to do is go into the work launcher section um scroll down to screens and then get rid of browse services and my instance you can see that they're both coming from the itsm scope okay and then we'll refresh and those should disappear as well okay um another thing i want to show is how do we go about adding banners to our um launcher screens how do i add a banner at the very top here um there's a couple ways to do it um in a previous academy we showed you how you can create mobile campaigns using content sections um that configuration is a bit long but i recommend that you go and check that video out if you want to learn how to do that with mobile content you have the ability to upload more than one image or video um to the top of your banner um with media section it's just one static um image or video um and typically that's what's used to um you know if you want to add like a branded image to the top of your home pages that's typically what it's used for okay but if you want to be able to share announcements share videos share messages you can use mobile content sections and you can check that previous app academy if you want to learn how to configure so quickly i'm going to show you how to configure a media section i'm gonna go back into my launcher screen scroll down into launcher sections and create a new one for media okay this is only gonna show up if you update your mobile app builder to version 20.2 with that enhancement we brought over a few more more configurations from the platform right so um that's something to check for if you don't see us so we'll click continue um and you can name your media section whatever um we'll call this corporate banner you have the ability to add a headline as well as a description text underneath that headline if you want to i'm going to leave them blank all i want is the banner itself it will ask if you want it to be an image or a video i just want an image we'll choose an image and i think i have one called mobile banner we'll open this up and then we'll save okay and then we'll refresh that um and then at the very top you can now see that there's a fan on top okay um for whatever reason if your banner is not showing at the very top it's just a matter of reordering your ui sections right um so if i go to back to my launcher screen just make sure that the order is in the order that you want um let's change this to 100 okay and it should still be there um going back into the media section i want to show a couple of things um into my corporate banner you can add a headline so let's say you know this could say welcome to servicenow if i save that you'll see some text that that's overlaid on top of the uh oh no it's below the image um i'm going to show you something on the back end that you can do let's say that you wanted the text to overlay on top of the image itself i'm actually going to open this this up in platform and i'm going to go directly into the json okay i'm looking for image um actually i forget how to let's see maybe this capability is only with content section okay so that's that's something that i should mention so there's a lot of additional things that you can do with the content section when you're configuring your campaigns you can also use content sections as a media section as well it just has way more capabilities um there is a feature that allows you to overlay this header as well as the text description on top of the image itself it looks like the media section doesn't have that ability but i guess this is what we can work with okay um and then i can add a short description underneath it call this itsm or no field service ignitions landing page and then we can save that and you can see that this is going to be text that lives underneath um the headline okay um the last thing that i want to show is how you can navigate to the mobile theming table on your platform ui to change the color schemes of your remote labs um so right now we're out of the box um if you're starting with mobile first time it's always going to use the default service now colors right which is our green um but with mobile theming you can control the colors of your icons here on your navigation tabs as well as this header as well as any buttons that lit uh that you run into so let me just try to find a button um so buttons like these right here you can change the colors of these with mobile theming so i'm gonna go back into my home page for on my instance and what you look up is mobile branding um and under system mobile branding um we're gonna open up the mobile app themes table and i'm gonna create a completely new theme and we'll call this corporate branding um let's say that i want to change some of these colors um from default green to something else i have a couple hex values here for the brand i'm going to use this and then for if you're curious what secondary primary and destructive controls we actually have docs on that so if you go to our san diego docs and look up multiple feminine both theming color guidelines it will tell you exactly which what each one of those do okay so you know branch changes the header um primary changes the buttons of here as well as your quick action buttons um as well as the navigation tab okay but definitely check out product docs if you want to learn more but for now let me just fill in my hex values for secondary and primary i'll use the same and then for destructive this is typically red these are your destructive actions so things like reject task right so let's go and submit this now now we're not quite done yet if you were to refresh this it's not going to do anything um the second step is actually to go into your mobile app configs which also lives under mobile branding and this is going to present with you all the different clients that you have active on your instance we want to open up the mobile asian client okay and on this client um [Music] you can see that the mobile app theme this might be if this field is ever empty it's going to inherit the default theme but i want to change this into the one that we just made which is corporate branding and then we'll go and update that now if we refresh this the reflects the new color changes so you can now see that it's um i picked kind of a bluish header right um and then if you look into our buttons it should also have changed we now have a green button okay so that's mobile feeding um really easy to do really quick um and i think that's all i wanted to show for today this was a very high level um quick start guide on how to get started designing your mobile apps you know we covered how to align your taxonomy with the rest your platform so doing things like renaming your ui sections your launcher screens your screens itself navigation tabs and so forth we showed you how you can remove unused screens that might come with your out-of-the-box experiences right we showed you how to move things around how to make things look better if you want to use a record or an icon section instead of a record section that's possible right um and then i show you how you can pick from you know our server styles mobile icon library we added a media section to our homepage banner and then we were able to update the colors inside of our app with mobile feeding um but that wraps up what i wanted to show for today let's go ahead and open up to some q a now um ian were there any questions that we want to highlight from chats yes um i see one question around size limitations for images or videos that are added to the banner for example you know width and height for file size for videos i think there should be a product box on that let me see if i can look that up um it should give you some best practices on what the size limitation should be so let me go and share my desktop again one thing just while you're you're setting that up i would share is that the videos do need to be vimeo or youtube videos that is correct uh we today we only support vimeo on youtube links um if you are trying to display videos okay so let's go back into our party talks if we look up media section oh what's going on must be something wrong with my wife i'd say okay um here we go so here's you can see the limitations here um you know if your users are primarily using iphone um we recommend using a height of 160 by 375 by 600. um and then if android and this okay um and video you can see that you know we only support youtube and vimeo any other questions david one other just follow up you know we were working on the icon section earlier and you were trying to hide the header for the section oh yeah that should be supported i don't know if maybe we were just looking in the wrong spot oh yeah let's go and check it out again i was kind of rushing so let's go back to our launcher screen we'll open up the my critical task icon section uh which is called this one uh right there i think we just i think we just glossed right over it because it went looked i was like hey it's right there so if i were to save that this should look a lot cleaner there we go so that's what i was looking for okay so now you can use that one um yeah if you dwp whoops if you don't need like a label for your icon section you can totally hide the the name itself thanks for checking david um the other thing to point out there is that uh that hide section if empty so if you have multiple of these and you just want to collapse those from the view if there is no records then you can just enable that oh yeah i can force that too so let me show you so let's see that there's zero records in this i think if i just reject all of these oh i can't uh well i can go into my instance order task um and i'm just going to unassign all of the ones that are assigned to me uh assigned to oh it is here assigned to uh we'll just delete david from all these records um and there's so there's now zero task assigned to me right so this should show up at zero it should disappear um did we save it let's go over time uh [Music] we'll save one time and then turn it on and see should hide huh oh that is weird um maybe i'm confusing things because this is the section versus the list [Music] maybe i can troubleshoot by checking out platform if we look up my what do we call this screen launcher launch your screens and then we call this looking for field service group by application field service work now if we look at the my critical task ui section let's see if that trigger is enabled oh wow there's no trigger here um okay well maybe something we'll look into later um but this should have worked if i understood that correctly though another question from chat from ken can you provide a link to the servicenow mobile book you're talking about in the beginning yeah so if you just go to your mobile committee site on the homepage there's actually just one button that you need to click to get access to all the important resources and guidebooks on the home tab if you look at essential training and click view more you can see all the new guidebooks that we released for rome um the one that you will want is for ux best practices okay let me open this up this will take you to this guidebook that i was talking about earlier okay definitely check out this article though lots of good resources all your now learning courses as well as guidebooks at the top um all the previous mobile app campaigns you can find here as well and sometimes we post um any new knowledge for uh webinars um and sessions here as well uh a quick question from larry on the choose an item pop-up in mobile builder is it possible to in a future update that you can add the ability to select columns um maybe this one's for you david merch yeah i don't know if that's an enhancement that's coming up in san diego or maybe they can add that to your enhancements list using idea portal yeah we've so we have um we've definitely been looking at that it's on our it's on our list of considerations and it's it's more just a matter of like prioritizing it with some of the other things that we're we're still working on our our core focus right now has been getting that full feature parity and then from there which which we're planning on having for august and then from there um we'll we be focusing very heavily on ux improvements like things like that you know making the the user experience in app builder more delightful and easier to use awesome thanks david um but i think that wraps up all of our questions today um so thank you everyone for
