called thanks to jace benson for showing me but yeah two years two years at servicenow i've loved every single minute of it um it is a great place to work i mean i can't can't can't speak more highly of it um bryce hey bryce how's it going sweet pool everybody's here look at this i'm so glad that everybody came this is great um yeah two years two years so what does two years mean um my dad my dad actually uh who was a software engineer used to say that uh five years you get five years at a company and then get out you know find another tool do something else um i i don't know i don't know that i agree with that metric i i stayed uh i stayed for a very long time at tv consulting because i really enjoyed who i worked with and what i was doing uh and then then i came to servicenow and i still love what i'm doing and still love who i work with so uh two years two more um and many more hopefully i'm i'm very excited to be a uh an employee of servicenow so thank you everybody thank you yeah i i appreciate it i uh you know i wanted to uh just wanted to kind of farm the karma train on you know it's my linkedin or it's my anniversary and all this stuff oh great great great like i'm gonna have a live stream i'm gonna ride this karma train as far as i can so i appreciate everybody that jumps in and says hey and lets me know that you're watching because it it makes me feel like uh like i've got some purpose here so super excited you know it's interesting i'm looking at my um i'm using stream yard so um the dev advocates at servicenow use streamyard i'm not a deaf advocate but i really really like it oh and there's chuck hey chuck um it's uh you know it's a great tool but here's i've got one problem because it's the first time i've ever saw i've seen this what is that who is that like it doesn't tell me who that is that's not cool but that's okay oh thanks ben thank you thank you so um i went to the store and i picked this up chuck you'll you'll appreciate this a little bit um i went and i got an oak creek brewing nut brown ale we'll do it in the style of let's code happy hour here of what i'm drinking to celebrate my anniversary and um i've got a really interesting story about this beer so this is a local beer um yeah float the goodwill boat all the way man yeah yeah yeah do it that's i i love it like you know i think there was a scene in community at one point where they said uh you know it you know no one's gonna downvote a guy on his birthday right it's like everyone's gonna come to some you know some guy's happier live stream for his anniversary so um this beer uh is brewed in sedona sedona is about two and a half hours north of phoenix um red rock country you guys have probably seen a lot of um pictures it's it's a very picturesque part of arizona this is one of my favorite beers i ended up at oak creek brewing just by happenstance and i got this beer just out of nowhere drank this beer and i immediately thought as my beer connoisseur i'd been drinking a lot of beer um and trying as much beer as i could it's like this this is it man this is the best beer i've ever had in my entire life and i said i don't need to look for any more beer uh i'm good with this one and so i went back home to phoenix and i think the next weekend i was going out with my friends so i bought some beer um and it was so i was so excited for it i was super excited for it right and i got there and i totally forgot that i had it and so at the end of the night i was like oh this beer i got to try this beer you guys this is so good it's the best beer ever blah blah blah totally totally talked it up and uh thought that everyone would really enjoy this beer so we cracked the first one open and it just exploded it like poured it it foamed out poured over and we're like oh ha ha it's a you know how funny it's a bad beer and i opened another one and it did the same thing and another one and another one you can't return beer you can't go back to the store and go this is bad so i just opened them and they were all a little bad and i was just kind of flummoxed so i'm like all right well i'm gonna i'm gonna drink some of this and just see how it goes because i was in my 20s and i was an idiot and so i drank it and it just foamed in my mouth and i said here you try it and it foamed in their mouth so i swore it off until today i was in the liquor store trying to find some beer because i knew i wanted to have a special happy hour beer and this one was shining right there i'm like okay well i'm gonna have to i'm gonna have to give it a try because i really really liked it before and every time i have it in the glass or from a tap it's it's delicious so um so here we go um the one thing i really do like about this beer and um uh chuck throwing the bottle caps right i remember that um so this it has a little arizona flag as the bottle cap which is really neat i thought that was cool so i keep them every once in a while i'll keep one and have it around but yeah here we go let's see if it's as good as i remember it from years and years and years ago well it didn't foam over in my mouth so that's good yeah it was good yeah grab the ice cream and make a float really i don't know i always think that beer is pretty savory chuck like i don't know do you think it's uh you think it's good to have ice cream with beer i don't know i i don't know there's some people that think that that's kind of cool um all right so what what do we got on the docket i don't actually have anything on the docket like i didn't want to um i didn't want to do anything too much because i just wanted to kick back and drink beer and talk to people so uh but what i do what i do actually have on the docket um oh there are some people in the chat that do say that this is you know not your father's root beer that's a good one too right and especially with some some some ice cream i could see that i could see that great floats yeah beer is sugar that's right absolutely beer is sugar so you might as well just put it on more sugar that's great um what i i kind of wanted to show this off um chase jace was helping me with this earlier um and i'm not going to get technical and it's not a service now it's not a service now tool let's show this real fast i'll add this to my stream so you're going to see double this is a brand brand new tool it's been out for a couple of years but it's really kind of gotten in its i don't know i'd say it's gotten this element just recently here uh jace was showing me this it's called it's the worst name for a product i've ever heard i i don't know why i don't know like how do you spell that is it two m's is it you know in the beginning or what uh but it's a streaming plug-in or it's a it's it helps you with uh presentations which is really neat um i'm gonna i abuse it right i abuse the crap out of it so um let's let's see what it looks like with my abuse so um i can click this is my the party parrot one so you can see in my stream so if i go back to me right so it's in in my background there and then because i've got all these um cool functions i can get myself away or i can make myself go that's not what i wanted myself go uh smaller control and then put that in i think that's pretty cool so this cool little tool that has all of these little bits and bobs um to help you with presentations right what it's actually meant for is like a replacement for um it's a replacement for photoshop or not photo uh powerpoint powerpoint right so you put your slides in that's what this they literally call them slides right and the reason that they do this i can put a new slide in here so going with some text um done it's just as easy as that so i'll make myself a little smaller here and you can see i i put a little slide up there which i think is neat right and then obviously i mean i don't there i need to be on that side oh oh no oh there it is there oh no i don't know that doesn't work whatever i'll just go through all the [ __ ] there we go i don't know it's cool um yeah so is it like obs yeah it's it's a little bit like obs ben it's just it's it is an app that runs i would say it's not a replacement for obs because it doesn't have all the little bits and bobs for like rtsp and all the different streaming protocols that you might want it basically makes a virtual camera on your desktop right with your desktop um and then you use that virtual camera inside of zoom or whatever program you're using so it's not it's not a direct replacement um but it's a lot of fun like that's the thing and so the other thing that you can like these rooms are already kind of already picked out for you so you can we were messing around last night making uh like a news show right so we could you can actually make like put yourself in this um if i put myself in this seat and then moved the content over here like it was a um an actual like full-on like live news broadcast so i was messing around um i was messing around last night with uh with chase we were talking about this and i thought that jace needs to convert his news.jstop pro to just a youtube channel where he does this like this would be hilarious um and it's just you know live servicenow news news.js dot pro live service now news on the hour he just does a news report i thought it would be funny um yeah yeah so prezi prezi um is a very similar tool right that's that exactly it's almost a direct like competitor to prezi and i don't know i don't know i just i picked this one up and i thought it was fun so i started learning i'll probably have to look at prezi too because it was night it was pretty cool yeah cute cute tonight show theme right yeah and i always love playing with the virtual cameras like it's um the wirecast one yeah that's that's awesome the obs one like at the in the beginning of obs if you first started streaming like what it's a few years ago it didn't have the virtual camera plug-in automatically so it's like you had to go through all sorts of pain to get the virtual camera set up so that you could pipe it through somewhere like zoom right it was it was like really obs like you're gonna go to rtsp and like all this twitch and all that stuff and it's like but i can't use it on like zoom like zoom just now has like that that port that you can use everyone's just getting up to speed now so it's a lot of fun i don't know i don't check the the streaming space like there's so many tools to learn there's so many little little little bits and bobs that you can go and mess with i think i think it's neat um i'm gonna take i'll take will ferrell off of here so yeah i've been using that so now this is this is my tool this is my tool that i've been using now um inside of my uh uh uh uh zoom meetings right so you know somebody says somebody says something awesome i can pop this up real fast and and they can see it which is like my favorite yeah um yeah that felt super super when i installed yeah yeah yeah yeah right it obs obs right like obs is this open source tool there's not it's it's it's nitty-gritty like that's when you run that stuff it's yeah it's a little different it's almost like you know you you get the hardcore people that are like i'm a linux person like i know the kernel inside and out i can rewrite you know i could build a custom build operating system for myself all that stuff right at the same thing with obs like no man i got my obs settings set complete like don't touch my obs like don't do it don't touch it yeah a lot of fun but yeah i i encourage you guys um if you if you get an opportunity to uh to check these tools out and um yeah cool yeah the cool icons that pop up like teams um no no no no no no no no i'm not gonna teach anybody yet nope i am not the person to teach anyone get i'm the guy that rebases and then forces force pushes and i'm like well it worked like i got i got my changes in uh my loop deck uh hey james i don't know why i call it hey jim um yeah apps uh not yet um so here's the thing this thing is pretty cool for uh it's a windows app right so ah that's not what i wanted it's a windows app so i've got to go program them in they don't have anything in the loop deck my stream deck and my loop deck are not tied into this yet it will be at some point um because like the number six down here number six down here um that that's obviously a key code so i just hit the number six button and then it pops up right so yeah i gotta get this all set up the the biggest issue i have right now um is i i'm a little talking to jace about this um with my with my like popping the stuff up like i'm a little lana retentive because i at one point at one point i'd go back to face um at one point i um i had this all set up i've written in a custom node.js app that basically pops stuff up on my screen like this so i had obs setting i had obs sitting there and then i had a browser source and it looked at a node.js thing that was running and because of that i uh i could pop stuff up and it was a lot of fun well it crashed i don't know i don't know what happened and i had it hosted on a competitor's cloud so it was um yeah well i'll just put it that way it was not it's not a servicenow cloud that was hosting it it was definitely a competitor's cloud after an acquisition so when it crashed i was like i better just find a different source for this hey jace jace is popping on let's talk to jace jason going to add you to the stream ready buddy three two one hey what's up man hey hey glad you could see me i i tried i had stuff to do until 7 30 so that's fine that's fine you made it work right i did you did now okay you showed me mm-hmm and there's going to be two of us here with that we doesn't right they got their they've got their watermark in the lower corner there are you gonna commit are you going to pay the money probably probably yeah it's only like a hundred bucks a year yeah it's only it's not bad it's not bad and says we love to spare obs at the same time that's that's where i'm at i was tired of configuring it every single time and because it was such a bare bones app like i'd get it configured in one spot and it's like well good luck like you can't port profiles over from one computer to the next so ugh it was terrible you got fans buddy you know people people seem to like me it's great i like being liked i appreciate the attention yeah no attention is good i'm gonna i'm not you're saying i should make a newscast i i did make a small news clip it did two minutes okay now and i shared this like two hours ago with it now do you have it set up in your mm-hmm where you can uh you can play it i mean i have it on youtube okay so if any because i know a lot know why i took it off chuck i'm talking about it yes 100 like it is so hard to produce on like grab the news collate it digest it and then regurgitate it out to somebody else on like once a week like that's hard like that is not easy to do and especially with the the stuff that you guys are putting together right like i i know i couldn't do it on my free time right i can't imagine that like it's like it would take a massive amount of resources right of all the creative all the images all the logos all the little things that go into making a you know weekly show like that like no no i mean uh i have a news aggregator where it literally collects the news oh wait and so paul jace i've never i've never heard of this before oh andreador gave me a challenge a while ago to make it forever ago and it's called news.js.pro and i have like 130 different sources that i check all the time for the new stuff yeah but um i'm one of those sources but i don't publish very often uh i had this thing up hold on okay all right i'll go back here i i got i got it right here i just got to import you're definitely not tv producers i don't even know what we're doing here here i'm going to go full oh it's double me hold the shoulder we're moving me over it's the same shirt can you hear it nope can't hear it put it down oh man i can't fast forward it i love that it's like picture-in-picture of you that was serious oh it happened serious or not i don't know how to take a joke no you don't you got jace how many websites domains or anything that you've like projects that you've started as a complete joke uh i mean as a joke yeah no i don't know but it's like you have thought i do have joke.js pro i mean i might have a problem it's literally a joke whips you're telling me that not only do you start websites on a whim but you have a literal joke website that you started on a whim like this well here was a thing i wanted to i wanted to test out an api like uh like a static generator and i thought you know what i really would like like a joke api just to hit and all the joke apis stunk oh no they're terrible you know well there's a lot of people then i love ingrown stuff out there but good luck finally right so i found three good ones on github and i just kind of made them one yeah kevin has a good point it's been around for a while i remember when you when you had that we were talking about it was like years ago yeah i mean it looks terrible but it works great it works it has an api if you want to test something and you don't want the api never to die like it's there's no database it's just flat files but because it uses netlify i can just say hey i have a lambda function and it acts as a rest api yeah my uh you know what i'm realizing now is the problem with um i leave it on i just leave like this will ferrell gif in the background running and i just forget it's there it becomes part of the clutter i'm like oh okay that's fine and then i know what's gonna happen is i'm gonna go back for like you know a few weeks and find a zoom recording where i've got some stupid gif playing and it's some important thing that's some crazy video that i should yeah there you go look i got it i have that look okay so now let's talk about this for just a second i wish i should have put that image no keep that image there right can you squeeze yourself down oh yeah i can make music i mean you know i can i know you guys understand like the joke here i'm trying to i want to make sure that people get this one like there's all these two people on the stream right now um like i thought it was funny that i called it office hours the first time and i was like what am i a professor or something like i thought i thought i was so funny like if i was some professor just so i can make this joke just so i can go as a professor that's it that's the only reason i i took 20 out of my family's mouth and bought a seven dollar pipe and a 20 like lab coat it made no sense i know i did it i just weird jace dropped like he didn't draw he just dropped video somebody must have come in and like interrupted him but again i this is great because if there's two people at least i can vamp for him he's he didn't commit to camping for me but i can vamp for him there he is hey i had to disappear for a second you look like you're uh in a giant newsroom now i i know i was uh shown a video of somebody who was really small in a chair yeah phil showing me a video yeah i don't i don't get the i don't get the show but it was funny so now i'm like i'll just make myself a little smaller than i should be yeah man i'm telling you like there's been there's it's just funny yeah see and okay so if you guys haven't seen um a lot of stream yard um jace can actually control this too right this is the cool part is like jace can throw comments on he can talk about so like he can you can change the layout like i love this i love this yeah you and then you can share my like i gave you the screen to share but you can share my instagram which are you kidding me you have a corn cob pipe that you you chew on like like really like when we're in meetings and you have your video off you're just like because i would pay money to see that that's awesome or this might also be an early access beta of linkedin streaming it is i you don't get invites you just have to go through um for linkedin streaming you actually have to go through one of their uh approved partners and ironically enough after i figured out that stream yard was awesome and not after but during stream marriage is like yeah we support linkedin i was like oh that's cool like no idea no clue yeah i'll share it next week man that's going to be a stand-up to remember that's going to do it for us so i know it came in late but you've been at servicenow for two years two years sir holy crap i remember when you accepted the job i was like what you're leaving for customer life you're like yeah no i wasn't a desk no i wasn't a customer i was an infant you were at tv whatever you sent me some swag for a hackathon for the meet-up i remember that that was fantastic no no pre-covered times ah i just let us get on again i left the kip oh why why do i do this to myself i have no idea and i heard i heard your bit earlier about like your dad was like five years and you got a good guys dude my old man has some hot takes like it's it's awesome it's awesome so okay here you go if you there's there's like there's only i don't know how many people are on the stream because i honestly don't think that the numbers are correct i don't because there's a lot of people engaging and this is this is awesome um but i think here's here's a little bit of mark scott trivia that i don't think a lot of people know i have pierced ears okay i don't think a lot of like and i i don't mean they're pierced wrong one i have full-on tunnels like i don't think people know that right it's like i didn't know that yeah and i've seen you in person oh yeah yeah i know people don't realize it i'm like yeah i've got tunnels like whatever um i was actually at a clustering meeting once and uh the customer had he he uh he was uh in line to be like the cto right and he was he was an ex-developer and all this stuff and he was making fun of me because we're at this meeting and i'm trying to you know i'm i'm there as the consultant have you guys ever seen that scene from um uh moneyball you ever seen moneyball jace uh i'm bad with movie names there's a movie with jonah hill and uh brad pitt and it is about the oakland a's okay it's baseball so probably not i haven't seen it interests you very much but um anyway so there's a there's a scene where he's sitting there and there's they're um they're in the training with the scouts okay so this is great yeah hot sauce takes ben you're incense i love this yeah keep it coming man i keep me on my toes like send me weird stuff because that's my favorite all right he's he's in this room and there's a bunch of people around the table right and uh baseball scouts right they'll go and scout out people they decide you know who's good who's not and who they want to put an offer towards yada yada and it's all these old guys with all this like colloquial knowledge right they are talking about this guy's girlfriend and they're talking about this guy's on the weed and this guy that and he's like i don't want to talk about any of these people any points at jonah hill right because he's like he's like why do i care about getting this guy because they're like that guy sucks and he's like why do i care and he points at jonah hill and jonah hill goes because he gets on base right that's the whole thing that's the whole scene that's the whole he just keeps pointing at him like to make these people feel stupid jonah hill was a um he wasn't uh he was playing this role i don't remember his name in the movie um but he uh ends up being like this like general manager of like the oakland a's because he has a degree in economics and he's doing this uh numeristics right on baseball right and so the whole thing is he's this consultant that he brings in and he goes who should i hire and he's like these five people will get on base and get all the the points everything that you need and the scouts are going that's the wrong thing and he's going yeah back to what that means to being a consultant i always felt like there were times i'd sit in those rooms right and my whole job was when someone pointed at me and said what do you think i had to come up with my hot take right and say this is what i mean or this is what we should do or this is you know who we should hire or who we should you know keep around it is it is the quintessential and i love this that that people are agreeing with me moneyball is the consulting pre-work pre-wreck if you want to understand what he's going through and you want to know what it feels like to be a consultant and to just like go watch this uncomfortable scene because this is what i did all day long but with the movies man yeah big short same thing same idea right i'm wrong everyone's wrong fine i'll go get my own money i'll go invest it somewhere else so yeah it was that's my favorite consulting movie i'm like if you want to be a consultant go watch that movie and if it doesn't make you squeamish if you look at that scene and go what's wrong like why does he feel that way i don't get it you're a perfect consultant if you look at that movie and go oh i don't know that i could sit in that room and sit in the hot seat and just be pointed that and told to speak it's like consulting might not be for you so yeah what who who who is absolutely rocking this thank you who your show i did i did i did no i did not know that isn't that amazing like linkedin i couldn't figure out how to do the chats on the stream yard so i opened up linkedin because like i'll just pop and watch the show in a delay how is it it looks good yeah i mean i look great so do you there you go there's jace he's looking good he loves it that's right so hot like okay so back to hot takes right so it's awesome right like i love working here everything's it's like working for a startup without the risk of working for a startup right like for me that's that's the way i look at this is it's so di oh man i almost said it's so dynamic i almost said that it's not it's so um fast-paced we're everything kind of changes it's like hey we're gonna change direction we're gonna change speed it's like we're gonna do this i mean where where where where on earth will i be able to come in after like how long was i there before we were like let's just rewrite all of now learning and so in two years one year has been taken for just rewriting now learning right we started from the ground up on a brand new now learning product so i don't know where else you can just go yeah we're gonna rewrite it yeah that's i mean when you work at a software company though right the problems you're gonna solve are software problems i mean there's obviously ways to solve that without software oh absolutely that's why i like well so and those of you that don't know i i actually work on the now learning to like literally on the now learning team now learning team is kind of split in half jim who's in the chat every once in a while and um is asking me all these very specific questions because i almost talked to him on a daily basis is um he leads the business side with some of our products he leads some of our products and all that i'm on the other side i'm on the i.t side so the fun thing for me is when when i say hey i'm at servicenow i'm actually implementing servicenow at servicenow i'm like that's fun like that to me that's fun um and and there's so many people that that are really interested on you know like hey how do we rebuild i'm we finally put everything in the same umbrella okay i'm going to put this back on on doubles here no i like this one let's try this one there we go that one i need some branding um well there's a guy for that who did your twitter uh what's his name i can't think of it yeah yeah well yeah cameron sent me like four images like 10 years ago and i've still been reusing it over like it's right here he did that you know if you find somebody who's good at making you look good you'll use those pictures forever i had uh i worked with a guy named steven fair at expedia and he is like a semi professional photographer he took a picture of me just sitting at knowledge drinking something at like a table and it was like a phenomenal shot i used that picture forever chuck's been there for 12 years oh chuck 12 years well there chuck's been here for 12 years here's the thing i found one other person that has been there longer and he works on our team his name is mark guy he has been here for 14 years there's a picture of him and fred luddy and like five other people at like some event or so i'm like wow that's cool that's cool and then and then in my in my social anxiety like weirdness we're in a meeting it's a vendor meeting right mark guy's there i'm like oh he just posted this on linkedin so everyone's talking about how long they've been there mark guy didn't say he's i didn't know he had been there for four i didn't know how long he had been at with servicenow i've worked for with him for two years had no idea on this meeting i go oh yeah and mark guy is celebrating his 14th year at servicenow i'm like oh i didn't know i don't know if he wanted people like he put it on linkedin so i was like it's probably good but i just i'm like oh i should probably should have said that oops yeah that that is a that is a long time that's great though i mean there's a lot of problems to solve and i'm sure the problem that you work on are super interesting jim god that's why you're in the business side jim i've had the i.t side i can't say i know some of these words you need to leverage your synergies across multiple verticals to obtain optimal success signals those words those words just ring in my brain when i leave when i leave your sales pitch now jace that's the words i remember it's not it's not the product it's not the demo you gave it's these empty words [Laughter] yeah yeah so okay chuck's chuck's giving away um he's a stream heart streamyard at home uh to um youtube for karaoke interestingly enough i set everything up for karaoke so so chuck chuck has been my mentor on this and chuck has been slowly drip feeding me information so that i don't go like off the deep end with all this audio stuff off the deep end oh yeah man this is me on this is me on the reservation you don't want to see it you don't want to see it when i go crazy it's like my wife's like what did you spend on what like oh yeah sorry baby um so here i think i should did i show you this yesterday i here it's this is my new party trick this is matter at all chuck taught me this when you're singing karaoke when you when you want it to sound like you're singing right you don't sing karaoke in an open room right you sing it in like a larger area so i actually have an effects pedal now that is plugged into here that is putting a little bit of reverb and just a tiny bit of echo into it just so it can sound just right just so it's got that like announcer bit to it like you know to be like it sounds just a little baseball like welcome to the stadium stadium everyone right like that's it that's the deep end man that's where he's he chuck is bringing me this stuff it's like when you learn the draw like a little bit better number 68 mark draw mark guy number 68 yeah chuck just looked it up i'm sure wow yeah isn't that awesome i feel karaoke yeah i feel care like it just feels homier right roomier or something because i literally have this thing set on a it's a so the reason i didn't pay any money for the effects processor okay zero dollars i actually had it from a previous like i used to play guitar a lot i loved playing guitar it was my favorite it's a slippery slope says chuck um and and and at one point i was playing guitar so much such a beautiful slope though yeah it's a beautiful slope i was playing guitar so much i failed my college calculus one class so instead of continuing on with my questionable career choice in in music i decided to knuckle down and join i.t so my love my passion my my um i don't know my driving force i guess is to get back up on stage with a microphone you know and uh you know be the center of attention i mean we got to get some room sound yeah no i've got it it's it's 93 degrees today outside i've got a little ac unit that's running back here i'm surprised i'm hoping it suppressed all that noise but we'll see i don't hear any of it that's good that's awesome in both microphones you don't hear it check check you don't hear any of that are bolster microphones picking up right now no no only one because it would feed yeah carefully i don't i don't hear any of it i mean it would have been a perfect time to use your away screen though i know but why i just i mean oh yeah i guess that's true okay so so here's the other thing that mm-hmm does but it doesn't make any sense it doesn't make any sense because i'm going to go away and then you're going to like i stay there like use hey jase can you think a little bit yeah hey i'm jace and um this is mark scott's stream that i'm taking over it's nice to meet you guys i'm not mark scott but i can pretend to be him you see once i wrote an application about determining whether or not a pitcher is a hot dog it didn't impress everybody that is not accurate and it should not have impressed anyone but it impressed everybody these you know what's funny these these kids don't know um you know i i talked to all the my tech uh bf and all the next gen people because i i don't know can i tell you my favorite part about your hot dog talk though yeah so this is before i knew mark scott mark scott had to talk about at one of the knowledge events about uh using all the buzzwords to determine whether or not a thing was a hot dog a picture was like was a hot dog or not and in his talk it was really fun because he added a bunch of personality by saying so look i only have like between this half an hour otherwise my wife might be using the microwave and it might blow the fuse and then it'll all not work because he's using a mid server at home and i remember that clear as day because it was entertaining i have a 40 u rack running in my garage it's not it's not full on but it's got a compute and the compute uses a measurable amount of electricity and what would happen yeah i'm not looking for my guitar no one wants to hear that um what would happen was if my wife microwaved something for more than a minute and the lights were on or something like there's too much draw on that circuit so the fuse not the the the breaker flips my server goes down so so during my presentation i texted my wife i'm like i have to give a demo in front of like i don't know jay that was one of the biggest rooms i've ever talked to he had to be like 120 people in bedding i mean i'm not good at guessing yeah and um i'm like i gotta give this demo in front of all these people it's a bunch of my peers it's very like i'm kind of nervous about it like don't don't microwave anything and so during it i was like i recorded it i recorded it myself and then like i think you find it on youtube um in the middle of this presentation i'm like i gotta give a shout out to my wife because she's not microwaving her breakfast so that we could get through this demo but you know what that did and i didn't know at the time and i've learned it since that let you tell a story like yeah people totally connected with you there are so many presentations where people are like hey you should try out this new fancy razzle dazzle buzzword here thing because it's fantastic and like they never connect to the audience because they're not solving a problem because they don't show that they're human yeah and like that just made you more human like i have real problems and like i have to just make sure that stuff's not gonna break but it was amazing um i mean and and so you know i look everybody like what and then and then fedora called me mr mid server and all that crap like come on now like there's people that know mid servers better than me i found a hack come on and so what if if you guys don't have the um context of the presentation what had actually happened what had actually happened was um i really wanted to go to knowledge i really really wanted to go to knowledge and the only way i was going to knowledge was if i got a speaker submission because the tickets obviously then our that your entry fee into knowledge is paid for and i knew i had to get that i knew i had to get that to be able to convince my boss hey it's time you know i'd like to go if i if i have a free ticket it's like half as much like it's hard to say no to that right so yeah it's totally guilfoyle from from silicon valley that's exactly what it is um but i taught myself virtualization that way so you know um anyway so i i'm sitting there and i'm going what am i going to submit for a server for a talk i don't know what to to talk about and i just i think i googled it i like i googled a couple of words like i.t buzzwords so i was like all right i just made up this i made up this paragraph about how i built out this thing that like would take ingest tweets in like real time and how i could do ai and machine learning on image processing and i'm like i could probably do it and then i sent it off not not actually having any of it done thinking they're not going to pick this right like it's just too buzz wordy it sounds too businessy boom picked i'm like oh no and so then i had to go and write all of it and i swear i was sitting there like banging my head against a bunch of java code going i can't get this to work it's not working and i'm going to be laughing you you killed it though yeah oh come on i put a link i put a link to the redux video you uploaded to youtube in the in the chat i'm hyper converging oh hyper convergence is a word i haven't heard in quite a while boy oh boy you're describing though it reminds me of like domain driven development like you buy a domain and then you have to build a project for it yeah that's what it was so that's exactly what it was i was like i bet i could figure like pressure is gonna make me figure this out like i'm not a pressure person i don't like pressure it's not like i wanted to be under pressure i just thought that it was funny like half the time i get in trouble because i think it's hilarious so then so then i'm like i'm stuck and i have to write this image processing plug-in into the mid server for service now i'm committed and i'm like what's the only thing i'm like all right someone's gotta have i a you used r to do it yeah it was a github package that had an rp it was an r package that that had classified images as hot dog or not because it was from silicon valley and i loved that show it was odd at the time and i was like all right well i'll just do this like if i'm gonna do image processing i might as well do that i've already got a package someone already wrote the package so i didn't have to write the r package whatsoever someone else did it and then i i trained it and it worked it worked i couldn't believe it there's a really good video by another scott way more popular than you sorry uh he talked about like what the right computers are like for using right computers for like machine learning and stuff and he talked about how training works for like machine learning because i had like no idea and it's crazy to me how you actually train a computer no yeah it's right you're saying no but i oh i'm sorry i was saying no to to ben's comment heck a boss i'm like no i'm not i'm a stupid i'm a clown i'm just a loud clown that's all i am we can all learn from you mark well here's the thing after after after i did all that hot dog crap i then actually wrote a package for work into the java in a java package in the mid server that actually functioned so for as much as people say like wow that was a total waste of time i'm like not really like i actually used to you wouldn't have used otherwise yeah absolutely absolutely i mean i've been learning graphql outside of servicenow for a while now and a whole bunch of other tech and i was asked the other day hey jace you made this thing forever go for knowledge articles to like render this special thing and kb articles use jelly like in the out of the box stuff and it's like well how is it rendering in virtual agent and i was looking at it under the hood and like oh it's making a graphql call and i was like oh is there a way we can modify the graphql call other parts of servicenow when you recreate like a thing it takes the customer's version over the service now version and so i was trying different things to do it but because i understood graphql i could totally like get to where i wanted to go right away i wasn't able to reproduce it but or like i wasn't able to like help solve the problem but i could identify exactly why it was working the way ralph q well graphql to me is so interesting because it's like you know you talk about talk about rest apis right man we're i'm this is supposed to be happier this isn't supposed to be work hour um no just kidding i mean i'm super happy about graphql so this is what you and i talk about in our free yeah like you're still on b right is my video paused my video is possible sorry yeah there you go um so the interesting thing i think about graphql is graphql allows me to just digest huge amounts of data without stupid like pagination or anything dumb like that it's like to me it's like the fire hose it's like the fire hose i want right where i'm like just give me all the data like just choke me with data like because i'll just process it myself and run through it and i'm like oh it's so nice to not have to paginate all this crap or like you know you know send a key back and forth but it was like oh yeah no i gotta resign my request and then this and then and then oh yeah here's your json again and then try to get oh yeah no not my favorite i mean you sometimes still to paginate through the data like if you use github's graphql you have to paginate through that data i don't know graphql enough to have happy graphql hour kevin i'm serious i'm serious like get your streaming set up and then we'll have you can come on man like have fun um yeah graphql i you know it was a technology that i think i'm just kind of on the on the cusp of like i'm an architect nowadays where i'm like yeah i don't need to learn all this stupid like i don't have to get into the minutia right i was like yeah go ahead use graphql that sounds good yeah will use graphql here and then there will be a line and then we'll go we'll go ui here right and that's all the arc you got ladies and gentlemen welcome to being an architect graphql is great though because it enables those front end folks you don't want to deal with the server to get everything that they want in like a call d3 no i'm not i'm ben wants to do d3.js no thank you no thank you can i introduce you to uh what is that place called vivid charts there you go yeah i'm pretty sure that's what they use what 3ds or sorry d3 yeah well it's i mean it's one of the most popular javascript rendering i almost called it an engine i mean i'm actually surprised there isn't a good tutorial on bringing d3 in and just rendering it with like a now component or ui pages that you know what that sounds like that sounds like that customization stuff that that's that's a lot of technology like your custom that's that's way out of the box chase that's there's the box and then you just went and like hurled the rock like as far as you possibly could it's like yeah yeah yeah just do you if you're in a box and then and then don't even worry about it like don't even you don't have to log into servicenow at that point like who cares i mean you should be able to do what you want with your get me wrong but from an engagement standpoint from uh like where is the audience like you know when i want to when i want to ask a question and get an answer i go to linkedin like twitter maybe but linkedin you know that's the place you've seen way more engaged on linkedin with these videos than twitter right uh ty's in a very loud place that's all right say that again get linkedin bro get it yeah like it's going linkedin has more interactions for you and such no linkedin in general i mean interaction sure but i would say it's not um don't have to find people right like i don't have to actively find people like when you like something i see other people all the time that i haven't followed it's just that that virility of like being able to click through and like see these people you down-to-earth guy i like him i mean he puts his phone number on everything kind of like you have your phone number by the way anybody watching if you want to call mark scott he's got this one eight eight eight uh is it for phx dev or phx dev yeah and you can leave a message about how much you like or dislike his content but throw it on here yeah call me tell me about it if you have any messages you can play them on air no i'm not doing that not after the last time not after the last time it was all fun and games until it got to the very end there i played that that's awesome about that garyvee guy i only recently found out about him i didn't know about him until about two months ago yeah no garyvee's got a lot of content man like go watch it like and and he's awesome like if you he has he's got a lot of weird like i don't know if you take if you take his content and understand what he's doing a lot of times like you will learn lessons from him that like just don't like if you just muted it and just understood like the dude like he picks up his phone right like he's this prolific content creator and he's just like earbuds on his phone he's like hey man i'm in the airport i'm wearing shorts like whatever like i was i had this thought about that and he records a quick video and just plops it up there right and it's like that's awesome like that's cool like you know make it accessible don't make your stuff um don't make your stuff so inaccessible where you couldn't make content right so that was one of the things that i i'm like i have more fun on a live stream right than i do going and editing a giant 45 minute video it's just not what i wanted to be doing editing is not your idea of a good time you were doing a bunch of it with uh andrews and you're a podcast yes i wonder i wonder what it would cost to like pay somebody on fiverr to do the editing for you guys i don't know but the thing is i don't you know when we were doing the the podcast stuff it wasn't just about sound quality right like i don't i don't want you to just like tune me up and make me sound great that's that's good too right but there's there's cuts right i want you to cut there's an oz out i want to make sure that like hey if we went off on a tri-rate about something stupid we just chop that out like right but you like making the content there's other folks that like probably editing content no i totally agree with you i'm with you i because i like the streaming tools the thing is i don't like streaming that much it makes me feel anxious like when i'm when it's just me like we're going on 57 minutes here and it's the very first time i've ever thought hey we didn't have a set agenda we didn't decide what we wanted to talk about beforehand i'm like this is a podcast like this is a right like if i just pop like this is like a podcast like people are probably just listening to this in the background right like that's what i want to do i want to do like passive content i don't want to do active content where i'm constantly working at it i want to do passive content joseph loves editing video there you go there you go you can see if he wants to do that guys i i would love to get better at it i personally hate all the tools i have to do with editing video personally i've been using this tool called screencast-o-matic for the last 10 years because i thought then i can do it right if i could do it from the couch like so so here's what i've been doing here's that's not a hot take this is background information about how i actually get all of my twitter and linkedin crap going what i do is i have fi i have i have feedly if you uh feedly is a news aggregator app right i was telling you about this the other day jace um yeah i have feedly feedly is i love feedly because i doom scroll but what i've done is i've i've chopped out all the stuff i don't want to read i don't want to read politics i don't want to read anything like national news anything like that i'm like no no i want to read like servicenow content i want to read like i don't know i'm a big theme park person so i like disneyland a lot so like disneyland news stuff like that i have feedly set up that it goes through an indexes one news.js.pro two then all the other ones where i can't get it right i can't quite get it i can't you know if i've got a screen cap whatever scrape whatever feedly does all that i aggregate all that into one and then in the morning when i'm taking the kids to school and i'm waiting in line for sounds like i'm flipping through feedly and i go oh there's some content i really like like ooh there's a blog post that somebody wrote that was absolutely like phenomenal right like that here's a what was it the um i just shared chuck i just shared your um your youtube video the javascript stuff i don't know why it popped up but i shared it right like it was just stuff like that where it's like i just randomly will put some of this news content in my in my stuff but but i have to customize it i have to it has to be my take it has to be my voice it can't just be the title you know like and why why is that your fault it's your fault jace it's your fault and here why is it my fault here's what happened years ago years ago i automatically had a news feed that just posted news articles into my twitter and it did it and did it and did it and did it and you unfollowed me and i had i had an app that watched who was unfollowing me and i went and i i called him out i called him out yeah we're nihilist lebowski we care about nothing we care about nothing um i called him out i called him out and i said jace did you unfollow me i was like yeah you've just been posting news crap like it's just like i don't read that so why would i i'm like oh i'm like that's a good point like yeah i don't want to just put dirt like you know what i mean i just want to put like crap out there like it should be it should be like interesting it should be something i read and there's a reason to see it and share it right and that was the lesson that you taught me so when i worked at a consulting partner um a lot of other people i knew and other consulting partners would hook up their twitter to their like workday or whatever it was and whenever they were looking for a new hire like all of them would post hey we're looking to hire somebody new so it'd be like 40 tweets or 40 facebook posts or linkedin posts about like this thing and i just thought man i don't like that not at all like that's not me that's the company and i'm not like like i work for a company and the company does great work and you work for a company and that company does great work but they are not you you are you and they shouldn't speak for you like if you're an absolutely or you you should have your own i agree your own take if you want to say like hey jace made a terrible video but it's funny go check it out right or yeah yeah or or hey i got this out of this blog post all you have to do is delete the unnecessary crap right and then just take put something in it and it looks like your content organically and you're not trying you could even cue it in the buffer and just modify it on buffer you are a brand you are you like each person everyone that's listening right now is their own brand you have to do this kind of stuff like it it will help you in the ecosystem like if you want you're talking about people that want to like one up you know what plus one their their income make sure like it's like go go do this stuff like go put the stuff out there in the because then when you turn around and say i want a job they're like oh yeah i know who you are like i've seen your stuff right and it's like yeah you can command that salary so do it absolutely get yours you know push yourself promote yourself no one's gonna be mad at you take over hashtags nobody cares right like nobody's gonna be mad that's what you do so yeah that's awesome ooh curation as a service yeah and then known as your brand yep you are definitely your own brand and that owning that brand is super important i was just told like i should have some because i did that video which you haven't seen yet right now it's only five minutes and it's kind of what chuck was saying they were trying to do it took me 20 minutes with the content together but i still feel like i rushed it at the door yeah no that's the thing like made it really easy to do it makes it a lot easier but it's definitely my my take on it like jason that's a perfect segue into our in into our sponsor for not people believe you so yeah um yeah gary's got so many so many great takes he also has something about make making content six different ways like each thing you make you can make it in six different forms right and you know what's funny is uh gary i i i had the epiphany right where i looked at the i looked at the analytical data and it was like yeah my youtube drop-offs are about five minutes right like on youtube all my videos at about five minutes it's like like everybody just you like goes straight down i'm like oh that sucks and it's not that it's just that i think short form content is what people like like they want quick fast and in a hurry and if it's not you know i don't have time and i'm the i'm the culprit i'm that person where i'm like i don't have time to sit down and listen to 40 minutes worth of content what are you talking about right like 2011 i started making youtube videos i actually got a check from youtube for 100 bucks before they change all the requirements yeah i used to make short facebook how-to videos like how to do things and so i'd make all my videos under 60 seconds before shorts yeah and um like they got tons of views like i probably still get views somewhere um i don't get paid for them because you need to have some stupid like ten algorithms which just crazy yeah but um but yeah you want short content because people do not want to wait for answers they want those answers very fast and yes everybody has the attention of goldfish unfortunately that's true today like well and it's not that it's like you know and and and just to your point like instagram reels and tick tock right like i stories like everyone has stories now everyone's like oh yeah stories and short form content oh you've got a child yep hey buddy um story isn't short term from content is is awesome i love that and then and then linkedin ditched it like why this was cool like i got to see updates from people it was ephemeral where i was like oh yeah it just goes away and like it was awesome that was so cool i felt like i connected with people so much over the the stories right just posting these short little videos and the stories of linkedin and then it was because it was just a fad i'm like this wasn't just a fad like it was actually pretty good but yeah whatever um yeah and it yes making me getting started like when you like joseph uh you've been my inspiration on like tik tok and like the short form content because you're just out there doing it man like i you know the side of the road like just put the phone up there and just start talking like i've never been able to do that and and it's i've um so my mentee my mentee the servicenow dev mentor mentee program right which i highly highly highly highly recommend go check it out it's so awesome if you want to be a mentor do it even if you think you can't it's awesome um the the big the big thing that i i kind of took away from that like from my mentees is like just get it out there just get it done just get it published just get it out there and she actually pushed me to get this stream um published right i published it live with her like because she was like we got to do that let's go let's go do that and so what ended up happening right is i kept saying like oh the thumbnail's not good oh this isn't good oh i don't like that you know this way or that way and what about my branding in this gif crap that i'm doing i'm like no just get it out there just get it out there i'm back all right i don't so let me ask is it better tight or wide i you know i don't know i i i think the tight is like a better i think the tights better okay well i tell you what here's what we'll do i like i like wide with the group and then we'll just go i'll go tight on you when you're talking and then i'm going to be when i'm talking no we're going to go group then yeah so yeah so so uh joseph that's sorry i got a little i mean a little bit there um i was trying to help her with the imposter syndrome and i realized that's that's me i'm a perfectionist for the imposter syndrome it has to be perfect like it's got to be right and and and i'll sit there and nitpick and and oh and this and that and maybe this and that and that and that in my work life i'm the expert right when i'm like in imposter syndrome i have to be the expert i have to know exactly what i'm talking about before i open my mouth because it makes me a little intimidated like what if i'm wrong like for streaming i'm the perfectionist where i'm like i'm gonna tweak this and move this and i was like oh god and it's so funny because i don't know how many people i don't know how many people i have told in their careers i'm like yeah man like come on get it out the door it doesn't matter if the ui looks bad get out the door like just get it going if you don't ever make things you'll never know what you did wrong if you did something wrong uh there's a book by i'm so terrible at names there's who are the mythbusters right one of the mythbusters uh incredible adam savage yeah every tool is a camera every tool is a hammer and in there he talks about how there was somewhere in the book the time there's a talk of a study of like group of people savage industries there's a there's a talk about how there's just two groups of people and one group was like yeah you don't have to turn anything you just gotta do it in my project and the other group's like you have to turn something in every single day and the group that did something every single day i always had a much better outcome than the gupta had like all the time to like turn in this great thing um because they could iterate yeah yeah you'll never score if you don't shoot at the net yeah yeah sure words have never been said checked me a lot about content like so i think you know chuck is chuck's listening um it is so cool that to look at i go like i went you know when i was in the beginning i was like i gotta do what chuck's doing what is chuck doing like how do i do that i got to do that myself like how was chuck doing and i was like don't do that like understand what chuck's doing right understand how he's putting out content in the podcast and what he's doing and then ask him for help and then do it yourself no i'm just kidding um no it's it's you know i always kind of model you know what is chuck doing like how how is he putting out content what's the kind of stuff that he's putting out and then i'd go to let's go to happy hour and really like enjoy myself right it was like this is fun this is a lot of fun like how how do i do this and here we are so yeah making content man it's a it's a it's a niche i have it is you know it's funny the other day you you pinged me on discord and you were or you didn't pay you so we have a group chat on discord that that it's just a private group chat that we're all that a couple of us are in um and jeff uh chad chase jace i said jeff i was thinking of jeff the robot in my head oh [Music] robot i don't know craig ferguson late night with quick ferguson is one of my favorites um what jace was uh he was like i need to make some content i'm like oh i'm like yeah me too dude let's do it so yeah i mean i'm always about making content but it's just it's hard i i really prefer i think writing content down like the written word as opposed to video content this is yeah well i mean this is we're gen like we're literally laying content down as we speak right here so you know i know i mean this is a passive process so i don't know i think it's fun like it's just fun to you know and then you don't know when to stop it's we're on an hour 13 minutes and we haven't we have not had a pause in the conversation right i'm like how the hell do we do that like how do i how do i plan for this like i can't play it for this it's fun right do you have a contract punch a content matrix what is that uh i don't know what that is i don't know when you say content matrix i think of um i have a note hold on i'm not gonna pull it up i am i think tons of notes um i don't have like a content matrix of things but i have this this little table that says like hey for the power twos and like uh i'm gonna find it yeah was here hey i i had a lot of fun kevin thank you so much mario party with the family sounds like a much better time please enjoy uh but yeah here's you know better you than me yep that's where i'm at i'm like jace is already doing a news aggregator and making all of his notes with his blog posts and stuff i'm like i don't need to do that no seriously that's the i was like what what kind of content do i want to make like i had like this like crossroads moment right where i'm like what kind of content do i want to make and i i went and looked and i was like chuck's making awesome technical content earl has just come on and is making awesome content you know there's so i came across a site that talked about tutorials how-to guides references explanations and like how those things all break down and you can write different types of content over those things so like if you have tutorial tutorials that you want or if you want things oriented to like learning you want tutorials you want things orientated to a goal you want how to guides if you want things orientated to information you want references you want orientated stuff for understanding you want to explain the stuff out if you must allow a newcomer to get started like you need to have that through a tutorial like you can do different things but a tutorial is like a way to do that that's great yeah so like i have a table like that but i don't think that's what the joe i think was asking about a content matrix but i want to know what it was yeah okay let's let's let's go to a real question here let's go to an actual question does that sound good this is a cool sure so what do you do when a customer doesn't want to participate in workshops but still wants the best outcome on the platform um reset expectations ooh those are good words i like that yeah reset i mean like it's like that's like like i'm a big guy if i went to uh you mr jane and i said hey i want to lose 200 pounds and then you're like all right jace but we're gonna start you you're gonna do these different eating behaviors you gotta get up in the morning go for a workout and all these things and i'm like nah nah i don't wanna do that stuff just make it happen right here's tons of money like what are you gonna do replace the grocery stores around me shut down mcdonald's like obviously i'm not gonna get that same outcome yeah i'm not yeah no here's what i'd say a workshop is i would find their motivation right because it could be that they're intimidated by the workshops right like a workshop is one of those things where you go in and you expect that there's going to be a lot of different people there watching you do what you're doing right a lab setting or whatever you know whatever you want to feel like that i feel like if you could actually take them out of that setting and maybe kind of personalize the content for them right like directed at them right of saying like hey this is what we're trying to do and here's why here's here's here's what i mean scare them right scare the crap out and go like i was i was previously on a project right that we did a b and c and then when we went to upgrade this happened right we spent x number of hours fixing all the little things that we broke because we you know we customized way too much right i i think it's a it's it's definitely a it's a tightrope walk right you're definitely kind of on the losing end of this but you know if you could definitely take take the time make them feel like you're making it for them then they may want to engage a little bit more yeah especially if you can bring in like their content or their problem workshop's a therapy session i like that that's good yeah we can't help you if you don't show up to therapy and that's exactly exact one it's so you could do therapy i like your idea with the gym right it's like but a lot of people don't get scared by that right it's like if you don't go to the gym you can't lose weight if you don't go to therapy you can't you know feel better mentally it i don't i don't know that you know it may not resonate with enough people right i think you know scare the hell out of them right just be like hey i was on the project and they went off the wall they went off the wall with customizations or you know we stayed too out of box and now their process doesn't quite line up with what they're trying to do in the platform you know what i'm saying like like show them show them the show them the dark side and then that proves your worth right of like hey i'm i'm i'm trying to prevent this i know that it can happen right i know that this isn't best practice i'll do it for you all day long if that's what you want me to do but i'm going to let you know here's the problems with that so yeah let's see what else have we got that was a there we go yeah that was definitely a hot take yeah yeah um and yeah there are i mean there are extreme solutions but yes make sure it's real right it's not just and and the and the sky fell and everyone died right that's like that can't be it like it's got to be and we helped them we fixed it it was awesome like you know it was a mistake that we all kind of recognized and then moved away from right pitch it right turn it around on them use the speak and just try to get them on your corner that's that's the best way i can i can give to be their friend right be their friend that's the idea it's like don't be their parent be their friend don't tell them that they need it show them that they need it so yeah something is better than nothing yeah absolutely yeah yeah get just getting to the gym like that's that's an improvement over not going yeah yep and that's that's i i've been there i've been in those shoes i've been a consultant i've tried to talk people out of it and you know at some point at some point in your career you may just need to say they made this choice right they've this is what the customer wants and i unless i'm going to make my customer angry i just need to to push through and just do it right sometimes that's what you got to do and sometimes you just got to fire customers sometimes they'll just not get the hint right like it happens where you're just like hey this isn't a good fit for either one of us let's move on so i don't know that's extreme that's extreme don't do that don't fire your customer but it is extreme i've never been in the role to fire or hire anybody so well yeah no i meant i don't know customer or person well well so here uh here's the story um a mentor mentor of mine um was the president and ceo of the company that i had worked for uh for a long time to atp consulting um he he would have we had a christmas party every year and what would happen is as we were kind of drinking and having fun and like hanging out you know he'd mander over while we were all talking and he'd go all right which client right and it was like hey what's what's the client that's causing you problems what's the one that we need to get rid of this year right what's the one that we just need to take care of get them to the end and then just cap it off and yeah it happened it happened not there it was a few times we were like it's got to be this but very often than not it was like no we can recover that relationship so yeah yeah go get it bill murray yeah i love it real talk sometimes you have to be the ghost of christmas future it's true it's true it's true yeah you figure out it's yeah it's very it's very quick it's very quick you you know you know if someone's got the consultant chops or not very quickly yeah oh man people have been asking me to get back into consulting i just i don't think i want to go back ever you know so here's uh oh should we go in tight sure let's go and try it all right so lean in yeah it's time for another story um so uh for anyone you know early in career looking at this um one of the things that i found out like i loved consulting i i would have stayed in i would have stayed a consultant for a long time but i actually i had a realization um during my career as a consultant where i said hey look i i've got all these projects like all these projects lined up on my on my list of things that i've done right my linkedin whatever like but none of them none of them actually went more than like a year right like it looks like i just jumped from one to one to one to one but i was a consultant so everybody kind of understands um and what i realized was i never got the experience of having a long-term project brought through to fruition right like all the way through through maintenance mode through continuing everything like i just didn't have that skill set at the time and i'm like that's something i probably want to shore up right like in in my resume when you look at your resume and you go oh i've got a skills gap right i've got a gap somewhere where i've got to go fill that in like i have that realization and then i went to servicenow and said and now i've been on now learning for two years right so i get to i get to put the check mark on that one so yeah for the check mark and also put the service now check mark down yeah well i mean that was a little bit more than i had anticipated i didn't i didn't think i'd be jumping onto servicenow that quickly but yeah offer i can't refuse um so again another one here you know how do i plan my journey to be part of your team at servicenow i've been trying to get through the solution consultant but somehow i don't have that confidence that i am ready um what is the guru mantra to be serviced now ready um well the mantra at servicenow anybody does anybody it's hungry and humble right so that's our mantra you've got a child that snuck up behind you again i have i will be back you got it all right so the mantra service now is hungry and humble and uh really i mean here's here's what it's going to take the the problem with becoming a solution consultant or a consultant in general i think you have to have um you've got there's a there's a race condition right you have to have the confidence and to get the confidence you have to have the experience it's like ooh so i never quite get that like you every once in a while you run out of one and get the other it's like oh no i have no confidence now i need more experience to get the confidence back so if you have no experience it's hard to get the confidence i say eventually what you're gonna have to do is just you're gonna have to make this leap right it's a leaf of faith of hey can i do this and the other thing too is if you go through an interview process and someone sees you and says hey you know what i think they can be a solution consultant you gotta i mean gotta respect that choice right they knew you could do it they did it from a skill set right you're gonna have to have people skills communication is number one um you've got to be able to talk tell a story and take someone through a solution that you've built from zero to 100 right here's why i did it here's what the reasoning is like all of that kind of stuff right because you're gonna have to sit in front of clients at a meeting and they're going to point at you just like at moneyball and you're going to have to be able to say word vomit whatever it is right immediately yeah this is the solution i would go with no we have to implement this with a rest api things like that you're going to have to have that confidence so i would say if you're going to try to build up that confidence go for it technically first like get technically proficient right where you're like i know i can handle all these problems and then try to transition and if you can if not if you're trying to just go for it right and just just make it a solution consulting right away you're gonna have to work on communication number one uh number two is your technical proficiency it's just never it's always gonna be number two but number one is communication and then i would say number three is definitely definitely definitely knowing um knowing knowing how to talk client right it's a different skill set so there's communication which is how do i how do i make sure that i'm not saying stupid stuff in a meeting right how do i make sure that i'm not like you can go try to chat up the ceo of your client if you really want but they're probably not going to be interested in what you're saying right you have to have that wherewithal they're not interested in your weekend they're not interested like they're paying you money to be there you better have some good value um the other side of it is you have to know how to speak client there are times where things are not going well and you have to know how to tell that to a client right like you have to say hey we're behind on this project or you know i have this technical blocker or this or whatever it is it's speaking client it's knowing how to say those words without saying oh man everything's broken like you can't say that to a client so there's a lot of practice in communication a lot of practice a lot of practice smashing them like but not emotional intelligence statement absolutely yep here's chuck yep built on dumb luck exactly i'm the same way i didn't anticipate any of this stuff it is it is 100 just oops i i got there i just happened to get in there i happened to start consulting i had a couple of friends that wanted to to get back to consulting so yeah it's um i there's there's a there's those are the three skill sets i would say so communication number one of just in general technical proficiency and number two and then when you get the job you're going to really have to learn how to speak client and and i i i say this a lot it's a it's a gut it's a gut feeling of this emotional intelligence and and and understanding right that i i say this to people and i say i can put them in front of a client it's to me that's like this i don't know it's like this third eye right like they have this weird like i know that they're not going to say anything that is going to disparage what we're doing here or i know that they're not going to promise something to somebody that they didn't mean to that's that's uh it's it's a whole skill set it's an entire skill set but it is so much fun so much fun um yeah speak client i like that there you go um and then and then to chuck's point here network right there are a ton of people now look servicenow is a great place to work i love working at servicenow but there are so many places that you can go that aren't necessarily service now right that offer you a consulting experience don't i i would love to have all the smart people here like don't get me wrong but don't count yourself out of of some of the smaller implementers because by the way that's where you're going to really learn in my opinion if you want to go and learn something like super super super deep go to an implementer that has less than 100 people because you when someone goes you're you know itsm it's like that's because that's you are the only person that knows itself it's crazy it's crazy so you may you know think about that think about you know servicenow's a big company maybe you don't necessarily want that you might want something smaller that allows you to be more in control of what you're doing [Music] all right chase i'm heading out see you yeah i think i'm going to shut this down as well it's been an hour and a half yeah so
