no agenda it's my show i get to pick the topics here's how it's structured we start each show with just you and me we'll transition to a surprise and something fun segue that to a guest and we get to learn about somebody in a more casual format play some games win some prizes sound good so let's answer some questions just right out of the gate what happened to between two functions it's on pause andrew and i needed to focus on our families for a little bit and that's great we just push pause on between two functions will there be more episodes maybe we don't know yet but we needed to put some focus on something that was a lot more important which is our families is andrew involved in this show of course andrew is always giving me ideas i'm getting ideas from him it happens all the time why are you making a show well i just wanted something that was my own i wanted something that i could set the tone i could set the conversation i could come up with the topics that's it just wanted something fresh and new why not another podcast i i felt like a podcast was limiting me i i tend to vibrate with intensity and i wanted to get that on camera it's a new medium it's a new way of doing things and it's just new and fun and shiny and i like that okay so who am i and why am i talking to you dear internet friend i'm mark scott i'm the senior platform architect for now learning by day and i'm a servicenow content creator by night but really i'm a guy that gets lucky a lot i started my career because i went to a party and i met my friend mike who was a software developer and i wanted to be a software developer too i was actually working in my mom's hair salon at the time doing hair if you can believe it my friend mike and i hung out so much and i annoyed him every day about his job and eventually he told me just apply just apply and i got the job with no experience someone took a risk on me i got lucky i learned so much from that job and a few years later i'm a consultant shout out to tv consulting and i'm going around and i'm doing custom software development for my clients and eventually we ended up needing a ticketing system uh for all the data center work that we were doing somebody happened to pick servicenow i get lucky again somebody says do you want to learn this and i say okay shortly after that i wrote a presentation and i got selected for knowledge and this prompted me to start making content for the greater servicenow community and here i am years later and i still love making content [Music] hi i'm saki stop trying to hire full stack servicenow developers they don't exist you can't know the whole platform someone has to suck at something at some point everyone's just disappointed in the end when you call them a full stack developer [Music] seven eight nine seven seven eight nine we were we were trying to do the uh the countdown to the recording and it started at seven and then skipped five for some reason um that might be a bug uh but anyway welcome to the other side of the show welcome from the other side of the show um where we had some fun fun content um i'm i'm here now um with and and i'm going to say what i always say in my head for your name and then you're going to correct me and i'm we're going to play a fun game that i'm not going to enjoy um i always call you m gopal in my head like oh i gotta go i am go pow but that's not your name and i know that um can you can you can you help me and tell me what exactly all the way through now come on this is c and and i have that like social anxiety where i don't want to say someone's name incorrectly or pronounce it wrong so i actually avoid the subject constantly and you're gonna make me do it right i've been an entire meeting yeah 100 i've been to entire meetings where i have addressed people without addressing them no just pronouns or or oh oh the product owner right so it's really fun being on the other side of this so please no you you can sound really fun you can sound really fun um without like using pronouns right like you could you with with product owner business owner our stakeholders like you can you can actually sound really super awesome if you just don't know anyone's name like i highly suggest going into a meeting and don't say anyone's name um also uh hold a piece of paper because everyone's afraid of the guy that's holding like a piece of paper like there's someone's like holding that piece of paper i i seriously uh if you're a consultant you should know this if you walk if you walk in and you've got like a folio or a brief and you and you're like just taking notes and you don't talk to anybody people freak out they freak out they don't like that like they don't like that at all try it oh that's really funny try it all the time i'm always the person like i have literally dozens of just notepads and everything because i just can't remember anything yeah no and i want to i want us to get into this right because we're both pretty neurodiverse people um and and and we have very similar like-minded kind of way of thinking i think i think um so we're gonna we're gonna test that out we're gonna see but like we've got to get back to again here's our neurodiverseness right we went completely down say that yep completely done a rabbit hole yeah what is your name all right so i know it's maria gabriella and then it kind of gets fuzzy and then i go no no literally say it out loud i can't i can't because i don't know what it is i don't want to leave or or ortiz um and the thing is the thing is you're you're so you're so the names are so different from each other i can't i can't like context clues get one from the other right like it's just not gonna happen and so i know that w is like watcher watcher oh man like and you're making the faces and it just makes it like it's just daggers in my heart where i'm like oh getting it wrong i know i'm getting it wrong and your poor dog is judging me joy to me i know right it's so fun it's so fun okay it's the p it's the i don't perez there you go i'm just gonna say like i'm gonna pick a p and i'm gonna just go perez there you go i mean can you think of literally any other latino name that is with a p because i can't no no i can't nope i can't it's literally perez okay all right okay okay so my name is maria gabriella ortiz perez watcher right gabrielle uh it's it's maria gabriella if if you're uh a bit more formal or angry right yes so i always say it like what what architect are you going to trust are you going to trust gabby the architect are you going to trust maria gabriella i feel like the more syllables there are the more authority someone has you know i don't know like i don't even want to get into it but yeah like i mean i don't know like i don't does does the name of the architect really matter that much you know you would think it doesn't but i have had so many awful experiences with my name in general right it's just been the best i can only imagine kindergarten was not fun well i was i went to uh come on camera there you go well i came to america in when i was eight years old so like 2001-ish okay and so before that nobody had any problems with it right afterwards oh you're getting the exclusive story um i don't think i've ever said this anywhere but we moved to florida naples florida when we first immigrated um and there were literally dozens of maria's and i mean it's florida so in venezuela people would call me maria gabriella which is my first name right um but in america people started calling me maria and anytime someone said maria seven people would turn around and we'd be like which one and it was just awful okay so i started going by gabriella okay okay but then in sixth grade people started calling me gabriella which is uh because we moved further up north um to north carolina oh no in like a tiny tiny tiny town it wasn't it wasn't gabriella it was gay abriela yeah no right back then it was somehow bad to be gay so they were calling me like a name by saying gabriella oh got it it was like their little stick okay yeah no it was it was it was so many awful names kids are awful man so from then i was like crap i can't go by maria i can't go by gabriella so i decided to like own it and just go no my name is maria gabriella yeah so i've always been a writer pays the price yeah i love it exactly so so that's kind of like the history behind it um and why if i if i don't like you you have to call me maria gabriella you have to suffer the suffer the syllables the consequences yeah and um so so right now i think you're still on the gabby level i'm on gabby well and then we'll just we'll make it easier for the audience as i screw up i'll just we'll just point it out and i'll go back to maria gabriella and we'll know like maybe i could edit in like a little friend meter somewhere where it's like no no no no i think it's a great segue into the neurodiversity kind of topic right because i i i have the same problem where i tend to mathematicize i guess you could call it i don't know like where i like i i tend to like program relationships where i'm like like yeah level up like yeah you calculate them right and it's not it's not that i'm a psychopath and it's a it's a response to my neurodiversity where like i will forget about not in a bad way but i will forget to interact with you for a little bit right like i get new shiny over here and like i haven't talked to somebody in a while and and some people can get very annoyed with that um you know and it's i i i'm interested in your experience like like have you have you had that too like where where you have to put the work in because otherwise you'll forget and it's not because you hate someone it's because you just forget i am trying to exist with lifts and if i have to write in my list three different days to reach out to tommy that doesn't mean i don't care about you or that i don't want to talk to you it means that i basically cannot remember the passage of time yeah it's like it's insane it's insane and and and and the the the sensation that you get with that too and i think i think a lot of people don't realize this is is then you know it's been three months i'm in this 3d printer right my mind's in these lists it's not or you know i've detached like i've actually like and i call this cognitive load yeah i disassociate the what's on the list because i don't have to remember that anymore that's on the list the list is remembering it for me right but the other stuff where i'm like 3d printer 3d printer like someone comes in to me like i haven't talked to you in three months and i'm like have i told you about my 3d printer and it's like you know i i have to i have to like i have to actually step away from that and go no no no the last time i talked to them three months ago we were talking about this it's one of the reasons why i love our remote workforce because i could just scroll through slacker teams and go what was i talking to you like who were you again and i go back through it's it's it's phenomenal it's been it's been amazing for that but on the other side of things like i keep at all times i have four lists that i keep and i love that you have they're just for there's just four i've reduced it down to four okay there's a job dude there's my white board there's my folio there's my pocket notes and then there's my task list and that's my i want to do a whole episode on how i take notes and my tasks and all of this stuff i've got a whole workflow to like digitize them and then automatically like blah blah blah blah but yeah you can't you need to see that i i i will make some con you've got it you here you go i will be making that content that'll be the next one i made i want to see where my life is right now the dog fell the duck's gone okay puppy i get it you're going on the floor sorry buddy um oh man okay i got my notes there you go like i'm literally barely you're drowning able to exist without these things but i and i'm still struggling i have gone literal months trying to figure out the perfect workflow because i don't know if you feel it like this but i feel like if i have something in my head and i haven't written it down yet it's weighing me down yeah well it's as good as lost yeah yeah right yeah it's what it's as good as lost if it's in my head exactly it doesn't matter because you know i might and and this is what i think people don't realize i might step on something right and i know that sounds inconsequential but i might step on something and and i think about this a lot if i step on the wrong thing and i pick it up and i have to go put it in the garbage and maybe there's not a bag in the garbage or the garbage is full it's like all of a sudden i'm taking out the garbage it's that scene from malcolm in the middle i'm gonna cut that in [Music] al can you replace that light bulb in the kitchen what does it look like i'm doing that's what happens that's what happens you get down this rabbit hole of some completely something different and and it's gone it's lost that idea no longer exists and even then even if it's literally just okay i have this idea i need to write this down my husband says hey what's the weather like my brain switches to weather and i can never remember it and i literally last night sat here for five minutes feeling nauseous because i couldn't remember the really important thing i needed to do and honest or not i struggle with this so much at work and it's been like and and i'm gonna talk a lot about this in my um in the in the meetup in denver and then at creatorcon because i try to tell people that i don't have memory like i can't remember things my brain is ram like yep literally distract me and you've cleared the cmos you've screwed me for this over yeah um it's over like yeah go ahead have you ever had those questions that you never googled but you've always wondered yeah it's a teleprompter like transparent oh man let me tell you something it's not it's not even that in it's yes it's a glass at a 70 degree slant that's all it is it's uh you know peppers it's in front of the camera yes yeah you know pepper's ghost here like um the haunted mansion right like when you go to the haunted mansion they've got like the the the dancing ghosts yeah it's because the glass is at a 30 degree slant and you can see a projected image onto the glass but you can't see the glass you see through the glass same thing with the teleprompter the camera sits like right right here okay and the glass is right here and the glass is at like an or i'm sorry it's at this angle for you um it it goes like this the the camera can't see the glass because the glass is clear obviously and then i put a tablet down like i lay it down like that and it just reflects into the glass that's all it does that's it and it's just a black sheet on the back that's it it's it's super simple like i never had i i was like oh like i would imagine like a professional one is obviously more than that but i don't need anything more than that that's it i really want one now thank you yeah it's a hundred bucks it's not even that it's not even that expensive it's just set up really accessible yeah it's super accessible it's it's not bad it's just it's a frame with you know like some mounting for your camera and like a sheet and it makes it look like an old-timey like uh uh uh camera like you don't have like those old cameras that have like the accordion out the back yeah that's that's just what it is you end up looking like that like like you know kind of screwed up but i love writing the coattails of like um all the flavors of minority that i am and just be like oh yeah totally like part of the first female mvps blah blah blah to do that and it's like i personally don't love bringing attention to hey i'm a woman i don't i hate that it pisses me off because everything ends up being oh my gosh i'm about to go off everything ends up being prefixed with woman yeah and it's like what's your intention yeah i appreciate it and i think it is very important to point out things like this but i want my achievements to stand on my role like not not be be predicated or prefixed by my identities it's it's your knowledge it's your it's your your your your personality it's your you know your your honor something something other than just like you know i am girl yeah i have i have an uh i lack a y chromosome whoa earlier uh in the week about like i filter everything i'm not a female i don't identify as female i filter everything that i do through my lens through a lens of my daughter right and is it is it going to be better for her and and can i make it better for her can i give someone a voice or a platform can i support someone or help someone so that when she comes along and she has a career it's going to be good for her and that's that's real don't make me cry no no don't do that don't do that like and that's i mean i it's it's you're right it's terrible that we have to do this it's terrible that we have to think this way but man i'm i'm out there crusading i know others are crusading like it's just let's just push like let's get through it let's get everything going and and have fun and and just be accepting of every person for no reason other than we like you like you're a great person like let's just let's just have fun so yeah wow this really uh really took a turn um let's play a game uh we'll round it out by playing a game um i lost the game you lost the game yeah already um no it's uh so here's the game i want to play it's very quick game um it's a trivia game it's called terrible servicenow interview questions okay and some of them are not just servicenow interview questions right some are just terrible interview questions that i love to ask people and hear the answer to so are you ready to play yes okay all right i wish i had no cards that's what i'm going to need for the next show i need note cards like a tv host and a little fake microphone well i've got a real microphone hello everybody welcome to the game today we will ask awful interview questions awful interview questions with phoenix dev yeah i get you i'm i'm picking up what you're putting down i love it why does ngopw have a drill at ham's reach on her death the world may never know i mean there's quite a few in my background too but uh yeah all right let's adhd all right start terrible service now interview questions uh first question ready all right here we go wait are we answering these seriously like how i would answer them in an interview so people could of course yeah of course okay perfect of course you gotta i mean if you're not if you're not playing to win you're gonna you're gonna lose okay you gotta play you gotta put your put your effort into it okay maximum effort um all right so servicenow interview questions i think we're ready all right the first question is how many windows are there how many windows are there this one's not even so if this is a real interview i'd be like get up and walk out at this point no see i'm not even that no i'd be like i am so sorry i am not quite sure what you are asking and that i would just mind giving me some more information yeah absolutely how many windows are there windows in what context are we talking about services it is it is up to you to figure out what i mean and it is the the interview question is more about your decision making process and your mind your mind process 69. all right there we go all right moving on see i love those questions though when they're like less crappy than that oh no but come on these are terrible servers now interview questions you do think they're going to be good interview questions like it's got to be a terrible good version of that yeah what i love to ask at the end of every interview i do is hey mark if you could be any kind of animal what kind of animal would you be and why yeah i like that that works for me see that works i well no oh you've turned it around on me like no no reverse we're breaking all the rules um if i could be any animal uh i would be i'd be a phoenix why um because you can always just like start again like it doesn't matter you just do it again like you just go to ash you come back like yeah you're done or any any animal that could grant myself wishes i guess because then i could not be an animal anymore like if does unicorns count like could we i would i'd change my answer to unicorn because i believe that i think it's great it's the first time i've ever heard it and i love it it's mythological it's on brand yeah you can tell a lot about a person by what their answer is and my number one conclusion is never trust someone who says they're a lion really never trust them all right well i'm going to add that to the list of terrible servicenow interview questions what animal what is your spirit animal what is your spirit animal i would be so honored yeah you got it all right you got it yeah um okay well yeah now me uh okay one more one we'll do one more terrible service now interview question but i want to do it it's a really hard one and it it's mean and it's one of my favorite mean questions but i think if we talk about it right again let's talk about it let's walk through it a little bit and then um we'll come together okay so um iceland is in the north atlantic its capital city is reykjavik a ui action can be both server-side and client-side at the same time how is this possible [Laughter] i don't ask this question very often because i think it's a very mean question and the look on your face means that i'm back to maria gabriela i'm pretty sure all right we'll walk through it let's walk through it together here i you know what we're gonna do i'm gonna pull this up because this is this is actually um this is what i see in my brain um it's it's from sn guru it's a as i say if it's the if it's the name of the math lady that's literally me right now just no no i'm not gonna be that mean here let's let's do a screen share for the very first time on the show we're going to share some screens and have some laughs this is i hope you can there it is look at that i can see it okay cool um this is my favorite blog post on snguru and it is one of the one if not only thing that i can actually like from memory c and i don't know why like i could see this like in my sleep and there it is but anyway this is this is the trick right here um if type of window is logically equivalent to undefined then you run the business rule code that's the server side code everything else gf.submit all this stuff above here that's the client side code ui actions are funny little funny little buggers they you can run them both client side and server side if you just put this one rule in right here and then you can run your function your business rule function and you get a current dot and you can see that this is all server-side why though if you want to do fun things like change a field value or react um like when i click a button maybe i want the to update the field value in the back end but not the front end i don't know there's a there's a couple of places where you can hang a read on this and do some stuff but it is it's very well documented by uh you know uh mark stanger jacob anderson those guys um it's it's here it's here and this for some reason i just remember this every single time and and i'm like hey do you like ui actions and people like yeah and i'm like did you know they could be both server-side and client-side they're like what the hell are you talking about it's like it's just this one piece of service now trivia that i could pull out in an interview because i don't know why not because i'm a jerk but you know this is literally the worst service now question i have ever been asked in my life i know right it is mean oh it's so mean it's so mean to ask somebody that on the fly i don't like doing that so if someone if someone is in an interview with me and they're like i know servicenow like i'm the best i'm the greatest right which i've never had i've never had somebody actually do that but um i wish i had known to ask this to be honest several times take it it's yours um yeah yeah it's it's one of those things where i go if you really know the platform then you're gonna know this question i have had one person answer it for me though and i wasn't being a jerk i just i'd gotten through all my interview questions and they had gotten them all right and i'm like well screw it let's just try this one and they were like okay i mean one of my servicenow interview questions is can you explain the client side and the server side the difference to me and do you know how many people get stumped on that one i just stumped i'm like the server is someone else's computer the client is your computer that's it like that's the only thing to just explain it like the client is your web browser and the server is a computer in the cloud in the cloud somewhere up in the cloud yeah yep my favorite like boomer buzzword is cloud you almost throw everything in the cloud and i'm like you don't know what that means you keep using that word i'm not sure if you know what it means yeah i used to i used to build hybrid cloud implementation or well i didn't do it but other people did yeah or it was like some of it was on-prem some of it was off for him that's a fun buzz word where i'm like what what are you talking about like what are you doing like that doesn't make any sense but yeah anyway how do i walk out of an interview yeah do it our system is on-prem we have domain separation i did not know that about you how have we not talked about this how have we not talked about this you you know domain separation i didn't know that no i walk out oh oh oh yeah they're ice cream i walk out of interviews on prem the main separation [Music] i thought i got legitimately like excited for a second there god no like you just built me up and dashed my hopes most expertly sir you're welcome good sir um [Music] no the only thing that the closest i've come to is simple separation which i think it's like a share item or something but that was still awful to deal with good good luck with that one yeah good luck with that one i'm a servicenow employee i got to watch myself but like yeah i came from a domain-separated environment like it's like it's it's it's like if you were a disney animator right for like 40 years you worked for walt disney i love disney so i just tend to do disney stuff and you did 2d animation and all of a sudden pixar came along and like now we're in 3d and it's like wait a minute i have a whole nother dimension like holy cow like this doesn't make any sense to me yeah that's the main separation it really annoys me um well number one doing any kind of implementation or any kind of like uh government work when a local sys admin starts asking me so what's the uptime like where can i see these server metrics and i'm like dude it's on the cloud oh well what happens when service now is down i'm like it won't be it doesn't yeah it doesn't do that like doesn't stop asking me yeah and they're like so what kind of data can i access the database for it and i'm like no no and they're like well that's we're not going to allow it what's the security on it and i'm like i don't know well how many concurrent transactions could i don't know it's assassin's creed don't you guys have a checkbox for sas solution where you can stop asking me these questions i'm gonna sash them up yeah sets them up like you don't stop asking me them questions i'm right here it's always it's happened multiple times where people who grab for some form of control over the platform they freak out when we start talking about servicenow because servicenow doesn't have this documented online well we employ people to do it yeah we we we have teams there's teams of guys doing the security for this stuff like don't worry about it like yeah well not don't worry about it but you know it's yeah we've got to feel like just just let them be dude and then they're like oh we need on-prem so we can control that but then they don't want to deal with the networking part of it and that breaks i hate on-prem it's been awful wow um but something you reminded me of you reminded me of two interviews okay that i've been in one of them was literally the worst interview in my entire life okay um i left crying it was fantastic um the other one was a very interesting interview where i basically had to tell the people that their beginner administrator didn't know the answers to the questions that they were asking wow and that i can literally just google the answers and show them right there and then that they were wrong wow but i literally had to be like because they thought they kept getting me on questions sure they thought they kept like oh gotcha yeah and it's like that's why i hate technical interviews technical technical interviews are stupid like it doesn't make it doesn't if if if i've got a certification and i've got a resume and i've got a linkedin and i've got all this stuff like do you really think that i'm going to make it up like do you think that i'm just like oh just kidding i don't know how to code like the technical interviews that don't include google do not appropriately like i i if you're asking me to code no don't code in an interview no no honest to god mark you could hold a knife to my throat and i don't know if i can write out the whole glide record query i can't i cannot do it and i couldn't i couldn't if you sat me down and said hey debug this code um with no google know anything i couldn't do it i couldn't do it as and and and i'm not saying that i am this person i would never say that i am this person other people had said oh look you're so smart and you know service well so no like i couldn't do that interview i'm telling you right now i couldn't do that interview and you wouldn't hire me right like exactly literally if you had asked me that client script uh that you might actually question yeah my answer would legit be you know i'm so sorry i don't think i've heard about that before but i do know that a ui action is this and here's what i know about client and server side but that specific thing i would probably just have to look it up for you i love i love googling because it helps me make up for the things i don't know off the top of my head which is a better would have been my answer which is a better answer to that question than the technical answer in my opinion because then in the second interview if i came in and you were talking about that thing i'm like higher i'm like she went and learned exactly what yeah she went and learned she got passionate about it she asked me questions boom as like hirer like that's that's an instant hire in my book i will literally never be able to memorize all of these things and anybody who has that expectation in an interview is not someone i want to work with honestly quit trying to hire full stack developers they don't exist oh my god it's so great um so like holy crap so in the end this kind of ties back to something i said earlier if we talk about and if we say if we're going to hold if we want to interview uh let's say we want to interview 25 women to every 75 men that we get sure you're likely not even going to get a 25-75 ratio because a lot of us count ourselves out of the opportunities right and men do these too oh yeah yeah because job honest to god every job that i have applied for i have not ever been qualified on paper ever but we count ourselves out of these opportunities right when in reality we should we should make them tell us no yeah they should be pitching you yeah exactly like they should be the ones who reject us we shouldn't reject ourselves from these opportunities exactly and that's like the number one thing that i always tell people yeah women men everybody yeah if it seems like a job excuse me if it seems like a job that you think you can do and you would enjoy doing it apply there's no reason no regardless there's no reason exactly and if you get if nobody reaches out to you oh well move on to the next job like send out hundreds of applications don't discount yourself from an opportunity because literally i wouldn't be here if if my very first service now boss hadn't asked me in an interview literally i applied for two positions with him one was an outage coordinator and one was a tier two technician and he was like so why'd you apply to two of them and i'm like well i really wanted to work here and i wanted to learn more sure and then he goes okay well you don't have any technical experience really so let's talk about this outage coordinator and i'm like well i would really like to talk about the tier two one and he was like why should i hire you right for this role if you have no experience exactly yeah and i say well you know what um i googled and i saved 350 dollars by fixing my car myself i went to the junkyard pulled the piece out of a car and i put it in my car and years later he would come to tell me that that was the only reason he hired me because he thought that if i was able to teach myself that that he could teach me more yeah do it yourself at all exactly and like you said in your first video the only reason you're here is because you were in a party the only reason that i'm here is because the same person said oh man i gotta hire an admin now i guess and i literally said oh don't you i'd make the joke right i don't even worry about it i'll learn it i'll do it don't worry yeah you slouched into a roll yeah uh-huh and i was like holy crap so then i got my admin cert three months later and now i'm here like i got so lucky just like you said you got lucky i got lucky but it's also because i never let myself discount myself out of getting that job yeah like my point do that my dad used to say you don't have you can't say no to an opportunity you don't have right exactly yep um gabby we're way over i'm only slightly only slightly so can you tell everybody where we can find you awesome so
