he's the host of the field goals deep youtube channel which is a servicenow youtube channel that you will definitely want to check out see the links in the description below hey phil how's it going um good thank you thanks for having me i'm so glad you're here man why don't you just give a real quick intro who is phil and what is phil goes deep i'm phil swan i'm a principal technical consultant at rangoo who are a servicenow elite partner now focused on grc privacy and security i am also part of the developer mvp 2021 cohorts uh alongside yourself and solidarity brother as you mentioned host phil goes deep so yeah that's me um phil goes deep is a youtube channel i started in kind of lockdown last year just always thought about doing a few videos i just kind of turned the camera on share my screen and just talk through whatever subject i decide to do at that point in time you definitely want to check that out folks check the description below for the links all right phil what app did you make for this year's hackathon my app is obs overlays built with app engine studio and now experience it's about making the world of streaming work better for streamers via the servicenow platform huh yeah so basically i i did a show recently with jase benson and he helped me improve the look and feel of the channel so when i'm streaming i've got i'm using obs open broadcast software and that's providing some of the the look and the feel right the the video overlay the shared screen if you've got logos and all of that stuff and sometimes trying to bring certain information to the audience on the screen is is quite difficult so we built it in that show using a static host site running locally on my machine with a technology called 110 which i hadn't heard of before and then that was kind of connecting to my pdi and bringing information onto the the screen and i've done a similar thing before that which was using like my local mac shell scripting connecting to my pdi and pulling information down and then really using obs to do those things so it's quite a lot of setting up and quite a lot of faffing around and i thought and kind of discussed it with jace at the time that actually wouldn't it be better if we just did our builder overlays in the servicenow instance so that was the kind of problem i was trying to solve it was really about kind of simplifying the ability to enhance the stream so i think there's there's something in this but i don't know whether it's something customers are going to buy or whether it's something that maybe within the dev community we can utilize something you know for anyone that's streaming and so on i'm definitely game for anything that reduces the faffing about can you show it to us of course can you see my screen yes i can yeah you can't see much at the moment so um basically the the two apps that i've got here manager and viewer uh they pop out so these open up in the new workspace and now now experience workspace so for example uh right now this is the show manager workspace and if i go to the home i can see that i've got a show so this is a show i'm doing right now this says i'm going live and then that also opens um into just trying to find obs so you can see here um this is me down in the corner and this is what i would kind of you know fade over to or or cut over into the screen and then we see this inception this host this whole panel on the left hand side is coming from my show record so if i go and change that show and say right i'm now live on air and and save that that automatically updates right so i might take a break i might say well i'm just going to come back folks so see you in a bit um and then that goes brb all that information is then available um the other thing is as a viewer and using a plug-in actually that jared montz built and is available on the share the ability for users to connect to my instance via the slack sn devs channel it will authenticate using oauth and then you can actually see right this is the show that's going on here is a shout out thanks for having me on the show right and that if i post that shout will come through at the bottom right so it allows audience interaction and i think this option also has the ability to using you know some of the power of the integration in servicenow maybe connect to the slack channel and pull information in or maybe you're streaming about stuff related to certain topics you could pull hashtags from twitter etc so we can actually bring that information onto the screen you can see how many people are connected to your site uh etc etc so the opportunity here is um really to harness that power of the platform but for me as a show host i just go in set up a show and just configure it into my obs settings and that information comes in live on the show while we're watching it and we can build you know different scenes etc so how much aesthetic control do you have over it like could you do like a picture background yeah i mean that that's probably where the next step is really because i've just gone with a very basic theme i haven't really made it aesthetically pleasing as you can see it's i managed to get a logo down here i was even toying with the idea of you know this little image potentially you would have a custom component that takes a feed from the information coming into the the app you know the the users and the viewers interaction could make that thing do something on my stream maybe it'd be floating around or maybe when somebody joins if you see what owl was doing when he was streaming by twitch they do this stuff natively but on youtube it's very difficult to get that kind of nice increased views viewer engagement stuff on youtube you've got the chat and that's it so that's the idea maybe a mobile app to be able to you know post these things yeah i think there's a lot of opportunity for this but it's not really it's it's not really a polished uh solution right now beyond just having made it like for your own utility because you stream a lot right do you see any inroads into the business for this well because i do let me tell you because i do i mean okay i'm looking at this and i'm thinking like we're all just super remote now like right now we have things like zoom which is very much i mean how much time do we spend faffing around as you say just trying to get this to work but can if i can imagine using this where you have primarily like one party talking for the information of everybody else and you could have all your information up there like you would in a youtube stream like in a twitch stream and it could be somebody just giving you like okay here's the business game plan for the next quarter or whatever here's the training on diversity inclusion or whatever and then people can still interact with you is it as if it's a twitch stream you know i never thought of that actually and there's a couple of things right so obs allows you to start a virtual cam that's locked down on a mac for teams but you can turn this into your virtual camera but teams itself allows you to do broadcast as well that's if you're a microsoft shop but even maybe some of the training when you're delivering training for the servicenow side of things the education part yeah there's you know bringing things from the instance straight into the experience of the streaming and the consumption for the audience to see stuff in platform and like say from the business perspective maybe like all hands you know the the business leaders might want to talk to their audience about the stuff that's in the platform that matters to their business so yeah there is probably a bit more to this than that appreciate it at the time like i love it because there's there's a close proximity to work as well because you know we're just bringing data in right so you have this philip swann says here's a shout out thanks for having me on the show that's just data in a record in servicenow so there's nothing that says whenever that type of record is inserted and it's hashtag help create a record like a task record exactly so there's there's there's a huge bit to this that i didn't go down that road of so i've basically got an updates table and this type of update is a shout it's just called a shout but it could be a request it could be you know an integration or a feed it could be coming from somewhere externally but like you say it's a record on a table in service now so the ability to workflow that information that's coming in and do something with it structurally and if you're in a company where you know i've made it so that i've i've used that third-party plug-in from jared so that anyone can interact with my instance but if you're in a company they've already got access to the instance they're already part of that they've already got some permissions and yeah maybe there's there is something in this i i never really approached it from that angle but yeah it's nice to hear that you think there might be more to it you know and it maybe solves a business problem that i didn't know existed was there any part of the platform that you really just like i'll just break that or like was there any like significant hackish elements to this um there's very it's very hacky it's very hacky so that um live update that's going on not correct um and i did speak to like uh andrew and brad about this like trying to get real-time updates is very difficult you know if you've got a single score indicator on you know on a dashboard i know that's one of your favorite topics reporting but that will update instantly right if the record changes it updates instantly unfortunately trying to bring that kind of record watching facility into now experience was either not easily possible or just out of my capabilities right now so what i've actually got going on is almost like an infinite loop so when the records list is updated or it's called a data resource when that's successfully updated it calls an event that refreshes the list so it's constantly updating itself and i'm pretty sure that that's not good for performance you would not want to scale that up or put that into your production environment but for the purposes of the hackathon it works and it happens i mean you saw it update straight away i do worry that that's not good for the performance and the hygiene of the platform but uh if this was to go any further that would be the number one thing that i solve yeah it's like one of my number one rules for hackathon it just has to work nobody said anything about working well it's just gotta work it's gotta present all right and what was your your favorite part about this for me the hackathon was great i like to be part of that although i would have kind of liked to be part of the team i i couldn't fit in the team that i would have been part of but in the kind of hackathon community that was taking place there was lots of interaction between the different people that were taking part so the hackathon channel in in slack in terms of this i think making it work and getting something that actually realized my vision to some extent i did have lots more things that i wanted to do but yeah just just proving that now experience can solve this streaming problem that i have i think was was great all right folks this has
